The WRs .... who makes the final 53 ?

Spider56 : 8/19/2019 10:32 am
I’m thinking there are 7 WR slots open including Tate who won’t count until week 5 ... White and Wesley might make the practice squad, leaving 8 guys for 6 spots ... My favs are S Shepard, Latimer, Jones, Slayton, Russell and Fowler ...leaving R Shepard and Golden out ... what say you?
I think you pegged it

correctly
This is tough
Jay on the Island : 8/19/2019 10:40 am : link
Not counting Tate obviously as they get a roster exception for him, IMO Shepard, Latimer, Fowler, Slayton, and TJ Jones are locks. That leaves one roster spot for Russell Shepard, Alonzo Russell, and Reggie White Jr.

I would prefer to see Alonzo Russell beat out Russell Shepard but I think Russell Shepard gets the final spot because of his special teams ability.

Alonzo Russell looked excellent on special teams also so hopefully he keeps it up and wins the roster spot over Shepard.

I expect Reggie White Jr. and Alex Wesley to end up on the practice squad.
I'm with you on the final 6
Biteymax22 : 8/19/2019 10:53 am : link
But would like to add it that it will be interesting when Tate comes back. f of those 6 players play at very similar levels so it will be interesting who the odd man out will be.

Do the right thing like any other franchise would do and carry TWO QB's. Not a 3rd clip holder that costs a WR or CB a roster spot. Tanny, yes, I know the guys like him, just eats up a roster spot.

He'll never play, so whats the point of carrying 3 qb's?
I'm not sure Russell beats out R. Shepard
BillT : 8/19/2019 11:34 am : link
Everyone is raving about him running down that guy but as far as a WR he caught exactly zero passes. He's an interesting talent but he could be a PS guy as well.
Wrs on the final 53?
ChicagoMarty : 8/19/2019 11:37 am : link
What a great question!

I have wrestled with this and am just happy that there is such great competition.

Really need to see Slayton in-game action but I am inclined to agree with your final roster solution.

I also agree that there is no need for a third qb taking up a roster spot

I kind of wonder about a pure FB type like Penny taking up a slot also

My final question is who will be the TEs on the final roster. Simonson just doesn't do it for me.

I think the game has evolved to the point that pure blocking types like Simonson and Penny are pretty much extinct.

We need offensive weapons and we need to create matchup nightmares. Neither Penny nor Simonson represents anything to concern themselves about for DCs

These are my sentiments exactly. I mean, I too appreciate Zo’s effort and all but is he a better receiver than TJ or Russell Shepherd? I haven’t seen it.

You could be right, but Shurmur called Russell out after the Jets game, pointing out how often he was open. I've never seen a HC do that before. That, in addition to how well he's played on ST's, tells me he gets the final WR spot.

Don't more than half of the teams in the league carry 3 QB's?
The 7 WR on the roster for week 1 Dallas imo will be :
Torrag : 8/19/2019 11:57 am : link
Both Shepards, Latimer, Fowler, Jones, Slayton and Russell. When Tate returns following week 4 one man will be headed to the PS or the waiver wire.

Golden, White and Wesley won't make the cut but could be in the mix for the PS.
Russell Shepard isn't great
gidiefor : Mod : 8/19/2019 11:59 am : link
but he is a reliable player -

Alonzo Russell has more upside and is a more powerful and larger player -- he is a very good special teamer -- his WR ability is not as consistent as one would like
not so fast my friend....
BCD : 8/19/2019 12:32 pm : link
2 more preseason games, bottom feeders R Shepard and Golden can sneak in....I'll hold my judgment.
Reggie White
V.I.G. : 8/19/2019 1:06 pm : link
Very nervous about him getting picked off the practice squad.

Not an easy choice, but I think I'd drop Alonzo.
Zo Russell
Thegratefulhead : 8/19/2019 1:21 pm : link
Made 2 plays, the type of which win games. I would keep him for the message it sends alone. I would reward Russell for his hussle.

Hustle
I liked White until I saw
Thunderstruck27 : 8/19/2019 1:24 pm : link
how he reacted to the interception that was thrown in front of him. Unlike Alonzo who ran down and tackled the DB, White just threw his hands up and gave up completely on the play.

Yes, most do.
Jones
Mike in NY : 8/19/2019 1:56 pm : link
If he keeps bobbling the ball on Special Teams does he really do enough at WR to keep him? I would like to see Brittan Golden get a longer look at WR because he has flashed more in the return game.

Russell make go to PS, but some team will most likely grab him with his size. I rather see him make the team as well.
Guys like Shepard, Latimer and Fowler are nothing special, all have been JAGS in their careers.

Two muffs on punt returns in two weeks for Jones.
TJ Jones..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/19/2019 2:26 pm : link
is the type of vet you want in case of injuries or suspensions. He's an average WR, but he at least brings proven experience to the field. Guy has several TD catches under his belt while a player like Golden has done nothing but return kicks/punts.
Zo was called out after game one
Dan in the Springs : 8/19/2019 2:26 pm : link
for getting open, and after game two for his hustle efforts.

Having said that - R Shepard was the guy Shurmur had lead the team following his post-game 2 locker room speech, so I'm sure he's got Shurmur's attention too.

I too think we are going to face a difficult cut-down @ WR, barring injuries. Like many other things, this will be controversial on BBI, imo.

All may be JAGS, but they are also what the Giants are looking for in WR's. They want WR's who are dependable, willing blockers, and can read defenses in the same way as the QB. The ability to take a slant pass the distance is less important than being able to find a hole at least 8 yards down the field on 3rd and 7 and the QB knowing where you will be.

Does an end of the roster WR really have more value than being able to carry a backup into next season who already has 2 years of experience in the system? I don't think so.
Why get nervous about RW, Jr.?

UDFA

Size/speed combo - dime a dozen in NFL

Decent camp, but not lighting it up.

AW is a better talent.

I would like both on PS, but not with 7 on roster + GT.
I hope Fowler makes the team.

Alonzo Hustle (see what I did there) is going to make cutting him a hard decision to make.

I think he sticks if he keeps up what we saw out of him vs the Bears
They all look pretty

I do like Alonzo Russell's size and speed. But I thought they were talking R Shepard as possible Special Teams captain..
