Would you be surprised if the Browns imploded this season?

SFGFNCGiantsFan : 8/19/2019 9:45 pm
It seems like everyone-and I mean EVERYONE-has them pegged as a near lock to make the playoffs & even compete for the AFC crown.

And yes, looking at their roster, they got talent all over the place: Mayfield, Chubb, Hunt, a certain someone who used to play WR for the Giants, Landry, Njoku, Garrett, Richardson, Schobert, Ward, etc.

On paper, that's a damn good roster. But I see how this team unravels easily: a rookie HC + a team with a lot of guys who think they should be the number one option getting the rock. They lose a couple of games & the bitching begins publicly & it snowballs. And their schedule before their Week 7 bye isn't exactly a cupcake schedule: TN, @ NYJ, Rams, @ Ravens, @ SF, Seattle.

I have nothing against Cleveland & would like to see them do well if nothing else that I hate Pittsburgh & Big Ben, but I think people would be wise to, as Shurmur says, slow their roll when it comes to anointing them as the next big thing.

I actually expect it. One hint of real adversity and pressure and I could easily see the entire thing blow up. The Browns had a good thing going and I think this past offseason will set them back.
If they stay
pjcas18 : 8/19/2019 9:53 pm : link
healthy, then yes, I'd be surprised if they don't contend for the playoffs.

they haven't had a winning record in 12 years. I think they're a good bet to do it this year.
I'm betting
BigBluesman : 8/19/2019 10:13 pm : link
they make it over .500 but the expectations are definitely way too much too soon. There's alot new and they would need it all to work out perfectly. I was shocked to see that the Bears are a favorite as well. Just going on coach and QB I would take KC over both of them. The Rams as well.

+1, I am too.
it could go either way - but i don't really see a middle ground
Eric on Li : 8/19/2019 10:22 pm : link
the odds are against Kitchens being the next Mcvay
they weakened their OL which makes everything harder
expectations make everything harder
they lose Gregg Williams who is a very good DC and replaced him with Wilks who was a DC for only 1 year in Carolina
I think Mayfield is legit but he does have an arrogance that prob rubs people the wrong way (I don't think he handled the Duke Johnson thing right)
OBJ could be great or have nagging injuries or be great but also a distraction

#1-4 to me are the real areas of concern. #5 & #6 you obviously roll the dice on because those guys are so talented it's worth it. But it's hard for any 2 players to overcome bad to mediocre D, coaching, and OL play though (if those areas have the issues they could).
Not really
Nine-Tails : 8/19/2019 10:26 pm : link
There’s a lot of volatility on that team and a rookie HC. But, I have a feeling Baker is the right guy to lead them
An implosion is possible but easily avoided, IMO.
81_Great_Dane : 8/19/2019 10:31 pm : link
I may be way, WAY off base on this, but to me it appears that if fractures appear in the locker room, coaches and management need to back Baker Mayfield 100%. If OBJ snipes at Mayfield, snap back on OBJ. Or Jarvis Landry. Or anybody else. It's Mayfield's team. Yeah, he can be a dick, but he's the team leader. Rally everyone behind this guy and even if the season is disappointing, you won't get an implosion.

On the other hand, if Mayfield is the guy triggering the implosion, then things will get ugly fast, because the team will follow him down the drain.

But he's the #1 overall pick, he's the QB, he's the cocky leader. Let everyone else follow.
Well, with a rookie head coach
santacruzom : 8/19/2019 10:37 pm : link
Trying to manage all those personalities, it wouldn't be THAT shocking. But I'd still be surprised. Mayfield is clearly the man there and I think he can have everyone else fall in line. He is the head of that snake.

But if HE gets disgruntled, it's over.
They made a mistake getting rid of Gregg Williams.
FStubbs : 8/19/2019 10:57 pm : link
He's the one that led their turnaround in the 2nd half of the year and it's not like Kitchens was a hot commodity. Williams had earned the job and there'd be no question he could manage this locker room.
last year I thought the Rams
bluepepper : 8/19/2019 11:56 pm : link
were a great candidate for implosion. Obviously did not happen so I don't expect it this year with the Browns who I think have a less volatile mix. Kitchens may not have HC experience but he's been in the league for 12 years under several different guys so he's likely better prepared than a lot of the young guns who've gotten hired lately.
I think it's inevitable
montanagiant : 8/20/2019 12:41 am : link
Too many egos with too many targets and a QB in his second year that everyone has film on.

Someone is going to be disgruntled and that is like tinder to firestorm for that team
I think they may implode but will definitely disappoint
markky : 8/20/2019 5:36 am : link
how many times have we seen "offseason champs?" (Redskins, Eagles). it never works out. This is not an individual game.
Are they talented?
mattnyg05 : 8/20/2019 6:04 am : link
Yes. Can they finish above .500? Yes.

Do I want them to lose every game they play? Absolutely yes. And that.has nothing to do with Beckham and everything to do with douchebag supreme Baker Mayfield.
.
arcarsenal : 8/20/2019 6:38 am : link
It depends on how they start. They aren't a team that will deal with adversity well, and I know I have beaten a dead horse here - but I really think they hired the wrong coach. There's no way anyone in that locker room is going to believe in this guy if things start going south.

A lot of personalities to satisfy, a lot of mouths to feed.

They'll be an interesting case study this year - they are talented enough to go a long way, but I really don't believe the synergistic team element is going to be there in the way it needs to be.

There's so much potential; I just can't see it really meshing. Too many cooks in the kitchen and too many guys who are going to be vying for the spotlight.
Hard to say

of talent. I think its for real because Mayfield if he stays healthy is one of those guys that wins. I am not a fan of the way he acts but you can just see it on the field.

But, I could certainly see them implode.

Looking forward to watching.
The team has implosion
TrueBlue56 : 8/20/2019 7:52 am : link
Written all over them. Too many ego's and too many ways for it to implode. They will definitely win some games and they will enjoy all of the accolades that they will get, but we will see when they hit some real adversity.

It may not happen this year, but when it does I will have my popcorn ready
Seems more like wishful thinking
BillT : 8/20/2019 8:01 am : link
I mean anything can happen but usually talented teams do well. They're a pretty talented team so I would expect them to be pretty good.
What do people mean by "implode?"
Mike from Ohio : 8/20/2019 8:15 am : link
They are humming along at 5-3 and suffer a bad loss and suddenly everyone is in the media blaming each other and then they go 1-7 the rest of the way? I don't think that is going to happen. That seems to me to be wishful thinking based on people who don't like Mayfield, OBJ, Landdry, etc. It could happen, but I doubt it.

What is more likely is this team is a borderline playoff team that may struggle some in big games or even in the playoff because they may not have the team chemistry most championship teams need. I wouldn't label that imploding so much as a limitation that may hold them back.

Mayfield/Beckham will be the toxic twins
averagejoe : 8/20/2019 9:18 am : link
The first time Beckham breaks off a pattern and Mayfield throws a pick there will be a fist fight on the sideline. Baker won't shrug and say awww shucks like Eli.He will get in Beckham's face and hilarity will ensue.

Unless they are putting up Brady to Moss numbers Mayfield/Beckham will not work.
Nope. I think they
section125 : 8/20/2019 9:27 am : link
will be good. All the hate for Mayfield is incredible. I do expect Beckham to play well when not injured and I do expect he will get injured. No hate, just reality. I still like watching him play.
Things will be great until something bad happens
Rudy5757 : 8/20/2019 9:27 am : link
the team is made up of finger pointers. There is plenty of talent but when they win will they win as a team or will one of them start saying me me me. When they lose, who will the finger be pointed at. OBJ is a great player that never takes accountability, Mayfield is a volatile player who speaks his mind and there are a bunch of other players who are not team orientated.

I predict that this team will implode at some point. I dont think the coach is strong enough to hold them together. They have Superbowl on the brain but not sure they know how a team functions. Plus their OL is not that great and that will affect the most volatile unit on the team.

Get your popcorn ready!

because they went from 0 wins to 7. Improvement rarely goes in a straight line. I wouldn't be the least surprised to see them finish in the bottom ten in wins this season
Given the number of times they have drafted at or near
Peter from NH (formerly CT) : 8/20/2019 10:09 am : link
the top of the draft, they eventually have to start winning. I don't think they are likely to be a dynastic team, however, given the egos and drama that is sure to follow. I could easily see them having a really good year, followed by mega-contract and other drama off-season resulting in a broken team and huge slide.
O line play is key

I wouldn't..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/20/2019 11:32 am : link
be surprised in the least. In fact, I expect it. You have a team of players who haven't won jackshit going into a season expecting to be handed wins. When that doesn't happen, Beckham will be injured, Landry will sulk, Mayfield will run his fat mouth and Kitchens will look lost.

I think it is more likely this team hits a rough patch and turns on itself than it has a really good season and wins the division.
I'd find it enjoyable
TheMick7 : 8/20/2019 11:33 am : link
Would love to see those big egos & big mouths lose early & often & then wait for the fun to begin.......
I'll be rooting for it
Joey in VA : 8/20/2019 11:35 am : link
Because of that dick Mayfield and that little princess #13 never shutting the F up but there's too much talent there for them to fail. They are going to unfortunately make a lot of noise on the field this year and we'll be eating piles of crap along the way as our former whiny WR finally gets to winning. It's going to be nauseating.

Ok, I'll revise - the "hate" for Mayfield is now justified...arrogant DB.
How often do these dream teams actually work out?
regulator : 8/20/2019 11:55 am : link
building a winning roster is about far more than collecting talent.

I also have concerns about their OL. Bitonio is very good, but they clearly have not found a replacement for Zeitler.
The rest of that OL is mediocre at best, IMO (Greg Robinson?), and could hold the team back.
Outside of the big-name suspects,

don't also forget Antonio Callaway, who seems like he just might love drugs more than he loves football.

Just a terrific locker room developing over there in Cleveland.

That team has more talent on it than they've had in a decade. Having said that, I still think everyone has jumped the gun on how good they are to begin with. I have them as a 9-7 football team. No implosions, but no Super Bowl run either.
My prediction is
dep026 : 8/20/2019 2:28 pm : link
That Mayfield nor Beckham will be close to the Browns best and most valuable player this year.
I think there could be
Burtman : 8/20/2019 3:01 pm : link
explosions on the Browns due to the volatile personalities but I also think they can still make the playoffs. There's a lot of talent on that team but...more importantly the rest of the division looks weaker than it has in a long time.
