Mayfield “clarifies” remarks

Big Blue '56 : 8/20/2019 2:37 pm
Quote:

This is not what I said....just so we’re clear. I also said I was surprised I got drafted number one. Then was talking about the flaws in evaluating QB’s. Where I brought up winning being important. Reporters and media will do anything to come up with a click bait story. Heard nothing but good things and wish nothing but the best for Daniel.

I thought it deserved it’s own thread given how his remarks might have gotten buried in the other Mayfield thread.

A little advice for Mayfield...

since he has been caught saying other things also. Shut the FUCK UP! Really, just keep your big mouth shut. Walk away, don't be on Twitter...if you want to be like anyone, be like Eli who, by the way, was not a big winner at Ole Miss but still went on to win 2 Super Bowls.

The Browns are a shit show and an explosion waiting to happen!

but I was surprised Jones was drafted #6 overall too.

I'd say maybe 75% of the world who cares about the NFL draft was surprised he went #6, so he's not wrong about that little piece even if it's bad form to say so.

now the reasons and W/L being a major part of eval I don't agree with, but that piece no argument.

I was pretty upset that Jones was drafted #6 as well...even though a bad feeling in my gut told me that he would be as we approached #6 pick. With that being said, he's proven that he can be a gamer, and I've grown to really like him as our QB. Mayfield is a bit of a tool...I think we don't need this incident to confirm that.
I assume GQ interview

Was before DJ8 went viral and lit up preseason XD
I read the article
Mike in Long Beach : 8/20/2019 2:49 pm : link
The closest defense I can give to Mayfield is that he was surprised that the Giants drafted Jones, but that doesn't mean that he thinks Jones is a bad or unworthy football player. It just means, given where a lot of the mocks had him, that he was surprised at the turn of events.

Then next, his comments about teams over thinking it was in response to a new question from the interviewer. It wasn't about Jones. The interviewer asked him (yes, as a result of the Jones comment) a general question about QB evaluation, and Mayfield made comments agnostic of Daniel Jones about how teams over think it.

In that sense, I suppose it's possible the comments were taken out of context. And there really is no logical reason to for Mayfield to care at all about Jones.

But still, just shut up.

The same can be said of Barkley as well.
The first part of the comments was fine
Stu11 : 8/20/2019 4:52 pm : link
Many of us were surprised/anguished at the pick. The 2nd part of the comments was an undeniable shot at Jones and his win-loss record at Duke. Why Mayfield should give a shit where Jones was picked is beyond me. #1 they weren't in the same draft class, #2 Mayfield was picked first overall so by his logic GMs evidently do take win loss into account. Guy is an idiot and him and Diva Odell are putting a gigantic target on their back that 2 excellently coached and well run teams the Ravens/Steelers will be happy to take aim at in their division.

dank41 : 8/20/2019 5:07 pm : link
I thought Baker's comment "Some people overthink it" was kind of ironic because I thought the Browns front office did a lot of overthinking this offseason.

Traded a great offensive lineman and defensive player for a diva WR that they arguably didn't need.

Signed Kareem Hunt when they had Chubb/Johnson.

Everyone is talking about what they have added but not neccesarily the affects of what they lost.

It doesn't matter if he's right or wrong. You don't throw shade at a player on another team. If you don't want to say something good about the other guy you just give some evasive remark like "I'm sure the Giants are satisfied with their pick." Then, move on. Why in hell he's making a comment about a Giants' player is beyond me.

it's just professional backpedaling. He may have said the negative stuff off the record and just blowing out shit not thinking it would become a national story. That Mayfield is dumb enough to throw dogs at NY is kind of sad. I never thought OBJ was a bad guy. But it’s apparent he’s an insecure asshole who just can’t STFU and on top of that needs his QB to constantly massage his ego.

You guys are ridiculous sometimes. This was not meant as a knock against Eli, you have no idea how big a fan I have been of his and continue to be, I just prefer the Type if fire Phil Simms used to show, what s wrong with that?

Really some of the sensitivity here towards Eli makes it difficult to even have an objective discussion where he is concerned. No one can deny he s been a great Giant and leader. You re correct Giants would be blessed if Jones becomes a clone of Eli,

Please let this season begin so we can stop focusing on fake news and meaningless stories. Mayfield has always been cocky and something of an ass. The fact that he might have criticized Jones in a manner much less harsh than many Giants' fans and other NFL fans did is completely irrelevant. No need to get worked up over this type of BS. Let Jones actually prove himself and then this stops. Until then the comments of an egotistical, big-mouthed QB in Cleveland mean nothing.
You do..

realize that Simms and Eli have pretty similar demeanors, right?

Simms was pushed to the brink by Parcells to get him fired up, but the vast majority of the time, Simms was a calming force. It's like people forget Eli getting fired up in big games or celebrating after throwing crucial TD passes.

Simms himself has said that he let Parcells get him too worked up, but learning from that helped him channel his emotions better for the rest of his career.

No one’s getting worked up per se. No one really cares, also per se. Some of us, however, are sort of incredulous that another player would say something like that about a fellow player. Media and fans? Sure, but they’re not part of a fraternity. That’s the difference. And yes, in the scheme of things this means squat

Mayfield cultivates this tough guy/anti-hero image. Talking shit on the field throughout his college career. Staring down Hue Jackson last season. His comments on Duke Johnson not too long ago.
