NCAA News - Rashan Gary turned down 300k

dep026 : 8/20/2019 3:22 pm
to play for another school other than Michigan. Now this all rumor and speculation - but Sam Webb is a pretty linked in guy when it comes to Michigan football. And they dont speculate who it was because it seems like Clemson is the school because they were the other big player for Gary before he signed.
Is this from the John U Bacon book?

is the assumption ...
Csonka : 8/20/2019 3:29 pm : link
that he turned down $300k from someone and got nothing from Michigan?
I would bet...
bw in dc : 8/20/2019 3:30 pm : link
it's Auburn or Ole Miss.

Michigan paid. Probably closer to 500 or 600.

Um, no.
I actually do think it's Clemson
Bobby Humphrey's Earpad : 8/20/2019 4:35 pm : link
Michigan hired Gary's HS coach, Chris Patridge, to get him and they also had Peppers and other North Jersey kids (Kareem Walker decommitted from Ohio St. to UM but flamed out).

So Clemson - the other finalist - really had to step it up.

If he played at UM for free, why would the supposed runner up have necessarily been the one offering him that? If the money wasn't a factor in where he ultimately did go, it could have been any of the schools that recruited him along the way, couldn't it?

That is, of course, if you are certain that he chose Michigan for reasons that are entirely consistent with amateur athletics only.
Yeah, I'm sure Michigan is beyond reproach.

He's been pretty much incognito in preseason too even though he's

If you watched his all-22 he dominated his opponent in the first game in limited snaps. He was credited with 3 hurries in three 3 step drops. Not shabby if you ask me.

Where did you see this? All I saw was 66 defensive snaps and nothing on the stat sheet. For a guy that his biggest question mark was production that has to be concerning, especially when he has opportunites to go against 2nd string lineman.
He didn’t make any tackles
dep026 : 8/20/2019 6:41 pm : link
But there was an article written after the first game how he flashed and was getting in the backfield.
Yeh I saw that, it was written by a professional fan, and the plays
Zeke's Alibi : 8/20/2019 6:49 pm : link
I saw were a bit of a stretch to say he flashed. Its still only two preseason games, but when you have Aaron Rodgers at QB you'll have plenty of opportunity to rush the passer. We shall see.

Jesus how naive
HomerJones45 : 8/20/2019 7:52 pm : link
to think the guy turned down 300k to play for the purity of MI athletics.

Either the 300k story was bullshit or MI at least matched it.
Smart move by Michigan

to outbid the $300K. He was a good player for them. Reminds me of the fab5.

Back to irrelevance for them though sadly with their coach leaving. At least they have Harbaugh and football to look forward to!

Maybe he was offered money by someone, but maybe he turned it down because he knew it was opening him up to a lot of trouble if it was exposed.

You are absolutely right. BUT Chris Partridge is involved, and a leopard doesn't change his spots. You are from the area,so you know this.

Fair point. I just think it’s a little unfair for everyone to assume they know what went on.

Yeah right. Cam Newton and the SEC bidding war over him put that problem to rest.

The NCAA is far too busy investigating the big offenses like posing for charity calendars and getting $20 to go to Wendy's at midnight to bother with these penny ante football issues out of money printing "power conferences".

Logic. Either the story was BS or Michigan paid him. These kids aren't independently wealthy to turn down that kind of cash.
While I have no skin in this game regarding UM...
RC in MD : 8/21/2019 1:28 pm : link
it's naive to think that any D1 college football program is clean. While most schools may not be able to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to its players or their family members, there some level of incentives given to the players.

Even the perennial powerhouse football programs like Army, Navy, and AF have been marked by their own scandals over the years regarding star players being protected from punishment after they violated academy rules/military regulations, etc.

The powerhouse comment, of course, was in jest. But the fact remains that whether it's UM or any other school, they all have some level of playing by their own rules to recruit or to keep their current star players.
Jeez, I really hope UVA football is clean

And he may have been paid from the Michigan booster network without any knowledge from the coaching staff.

Harbaugh does not seem like a win at all costs coach. So I would sort of be stunned, even despite the growing pressure, if Harbaugh went down that path...

People who hate Michigan use a book written by an author who works for Michigan and went to Michigan to continue to hate Michigan. That's nothing new at all, and doesn't make the school a national laughingstock.

Plus, if you've read the other Bacon books about the Rich Rod and Brady Hoke eras, you'd see that he takes the school to task about hiring that assclown AD.

As to Michigan having integrity, it's been widely reported how Beilein was frustrated by cheating in college basketball, leading to him deciding to go to the NBA.
