This kid Hilliman looks like he has some get up and go in him. I'd like to see more.
Perkins looked explosive on a few plays last week.
Good news - they have some decent backups to choose from. I think Smith may be the odd man out, except for his special teams play, although there are plenty willing and available players to fill that spot.

I liked what I have seen thus far from both Perkins and Smith. I can't wait to see Barkley run behind the first string O-line.
If Perkins continues to play like he did vs the Bears Â
this was a hot button with Coughlin, but both Gallamn and smith have had comments made about picking up blitzes while Perkins has been criticized for missing blitz pickups.
That could swing a tight race between Smith and Perkins.
Something to keep in mind. Gallman didn't run well against the Jets, but his brains helped Jones look really good.
I think there are sufficient players to fill Smith's special team assignments.
But FMiC has a point about blitz pickups. Very important in the eyes of the coaches.
Hilliman is an instinctive runner and intriguing to me. To the point where I'd consider keeping two of the other three tailbacks behind SB, and keep Hilliman as the #4.
because he'll be the bruiser change of pace to keep punishment off SB. Perkins shows some wiggle catching passes out of the backfield, but he's putting too many mental errors on tape and Gallman's the tougher runner between the tackles.
RE: RE: Smith plays on all four special team units. Â

If Smith is doing well on special teams, why replace him? You want your backups to play specials, well, here's one guy that can. In a similar vein, a guy like Alonzo Russell isn't going to make the team because he's an outstanding WR - he'll make it because he's an asset on special teams.

I think Hilliman is likely a PS candidate.
The last RB on the depth chart usually does end up on the PS.

Nice to be nit picking on backups, isn't it.
Gallman and Eli Penny are a lock for this backfield Â
...but if the O-line is kicking butt at the LOS, probably doesn't matter which one we keep.
Perkins over Gallman? How on Earth did you come to that conclusion.
Saquon, Gallman, Smith to me are all locks. My guess is neither Perkins nor HIlliman win a spot and Penny claims the 4th spot. HIlliman to PS with Perkins released.
For me, the biggest RB question is do the Giants keep Penny? Â
I was extremely happy with Gallman pick coming out of Clemson. I wanted either him or Marlon Mack. I don't think Gallman flashed as much last season as I would've liked but with an improved line in front I'm excited for this year.
I hated the Perkins pick as he appeared to lack NFL level instincts, amongst other issues, and I think my belief was borne out his first two years in league (where there were injury issues too). He showed tremendous improvement in the Bears game however. Maybe a light bulb went off, IDK. I don't have time to follow-up training camp reports as much as I'd like but if the Bears showing is representative of what he's been doing day-in/day-out in camp then I think we have a very nice competition on its way.
is better than Perkins, but neither is likely to get many carried. If they do, it's only because Barkley is injured, and then we are finished. Barkley is essentially our franchise QB.
For that reason, I'd investigate whether Gallman has any trade value. (I assume Perkins has none.) That is especially true if the Giants decide to keep Tanney instead of Lauletta. Maybe trade both players for a fifth round pick, or a backup OL, WR, or edge rusher.
But I agree with LI NHB. Gallman, Smith, and Penny are the likely backups. Hilliman to the PS. Perkins is released.
A major part of Barkley’s value is his receiving talent, Â
especially because we don’t have a bunch of dangerous WR threats. So if Barkley comes out because of say, a long yardage situation and Barkley needs a breather, who would you put in?
A. Our fourth best WR
B. Our best pass blocker
C. Our best pass catching RB, not named Barkley.
as a pair spelling Barkley. Perkins pass catching is the best of the back ups by a mile. Gallman has more decisive north south to him and should be effective with perkins handeling the 3dd sown back
I do too. He can actually contribute running and catching the ball as well which is rare for a FB these days. Shurmur was just praising him last week also.
My guess is that Hilliman is headed for the practice squad
Gallman / Perkins / Smith = Two will be kept, the odd man out will be dangled as trade bait and cut if no takers (unless one stinks it up bad in the last 2 preseason games). I like Perkins, but believe he will be the odd man out. The team seems to like Gallman in the backup roll, and Smith has the size/power combo.

I would look to keep Barkley in on passing downs and give him breathers on short yardage.
If Barkley ever gets hurt, we're screwed but Perkins is more like him than anybody else (shifty and good hands); so in my mind, Gallman is odd man out.

Nice call Jon I agree he has flashed and surprised me.
I may have been in a drunken haze at the bar

He's only played in one.
He fumbled in the first game, dropped a pass and missed a blitz pickup. He looked much better in game 2.

he definitely stood out to me.

Agree.
Smith and Perkins are fighting for one spot.
Also, Hilliman is a practice squad guy. He's not making the 53.

For the "hammer" role. Smith gets the nod.
