He's handled a few things very similarly to Eli already. He has a bit of that subtle dry edge to him. I wonder if he has picked up some ways of handling things from Eli already. Little things like I think help the argument for keeping the vet around to learn from.
Florio wrote a pretty thoughtful article I thought Â
about how non-Sports reporters and outlets, GQ specifically, make a killing getting athletes to say controversial things about sports and printing them, because the athletes are not under the impression that they are being interviewed about sports, and instead are there for a fashion or lifestyle feature. They end up publishing nuggets and hot taeks (often disingenuous or half-baked) that REAL sports reporters and outlets usually could never get, because athletes are on their guard when sitting down for real interviews.
Finally, these gotcha interviews make things harder for the ppl who have to cover NFL on a daily basis.
Quote:
But when will non-sports outlets like GQ be criticized for drawing controversial remarks from young, inexperienced players in a casual setting, where they often don’t realize anything they say can and will be used against them? Last year, it was Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey, who learned his lesson the hard way about anything and everything he says to Clay Skipper of GQ being fair game. This year, it’s Mayfield, who blurted out his opinion about the Giants and Jones after noticing a SportsCenter segment about the Giants while Mayfield and Skipper were having a meal.
It’s disingenuous, in my view, for reporters to play that “gotcha!” game, treating every word uttered during an encounter with the subject of an interview as fair game unless and until the subject of the interview utters the magic words: “Off the record.” And for people who cover the NFL on a regular basis, those tactics are among the quickest ways to run out of people to interview.
I had you pegged as a crusty old “get off my lawn” type, but your emoji skillz are strong
As for Baker, good on him for reaching out. And more importantly, good for Jones the way he handled it. Grenade came at him, and instead of throwing it at someone else he defused it.
so he did an interview, had to release a statement, did a social media blitz defending his comments, then backtracked and apologized...and yet...his comments were taken out of context...right...
How cool is it that we haven't played three preseason games yet, and we're at a point where you can discuss Jones being classy with the term "as usual" and it's perfectly reasonable.
That it "blows my mind" that the Giants took Jones?
Yes, I get that a bunch of Giants fans felt the same way, but that's not the point.
IFFFFF, you were giving him the benefit of the doubt
It would be that he thinks so poorly of nfl scouts and their over focus on measurables, I.e. josh Allen types. So it blew his mind that the Giants focused on the intangibles of what it takes to win.
What part of saying his mind was blown the Giants took Jones at #6 is taken out of context or confusing in any way?
But there is nothing the least bit confusing or misunderstood about what he said above. His personal opinion is HE was shocked Jones went #6. And then tried to back pedal by saying they don't value winning enough - but wasn't talking about Jones.
Bullshit on a shingle and he obviously believes the general population - and Jones - is an idiot for buying such a BS "explanation" that makes zero sense, complete with fully back-firing logic.
He said what he said and didn't think it would go public. Basically he wanted to trash the guy in private, behind his back, like cowards and sh#t talkers do. Good for Jones taking the high road.
and he doesn't deny being shocked by the Giants' pick of Jones.
The GQ reporter was lazy in framing the whole thing about
being a winning QB being related to Daniel Jones. But Mayfield saying "this is not what I said" - is a lie, because it's exactly what he said by his own admission in that ESPN article.
He's never been shy about speaking his mind and owning up to it. It's essentially his style. And you can usually trace back to genesis of why he did something...
So it's probably not a stretch to assume if Mayfield was taking a real shot at Jones he wouldn't back off.
Nevertheless, a smart move by Team Mayfield to put the fire out.
about sharing his opinions. I saw him this past winter and mentioned that I hoped the Giants liked Murray (before everyone knew it was a cinch to AZ), and he replied that they better as they need the help. He definitely doesn't think much of Eli. And that's cool. But you need to be a lot more careful speaking to a GQ reporter than a bouncer in the valley. Good on him for reaching out, but it definitely looks more like a "I didn't mean for this to get out" than an "out of context." He doesn't expect much from Jones. Hope he's wrong.

+1
If it comes from him - give him positive credit ... Â

Since everyone saying Jones is a clone of Eli
He probably said, "oh golly gee oh shucksa darn"
and Jones handled this perfectly from his side.
there is now no story(or should not be)
This will never happen....ever
I'm going to ignore them.

Yeah, and Baker is a stupid name, too. Who names their kid Baker, anyway? Does he have siblings named Butcher and Candlestick Maker?

"Do not rebuke mockers or they will hate you; rebuke the wise and they will love you"
If it comes from surrogate "Team Mayfield" it means nothing, and he will surely run his mouth again.
