I’m amazed with so many hitters out all year how well our offense is still doing (Cespedes, McNeil, Smith, Nimmo, Lowrie, Cano). Mets are second in wRC+ only to the Dodgers in the NL. That’s pretty incredible. Getting Davis back was a huge boost. Nimmo, McNeil, and Lowrie seem to be returning shortly. Our pitching is third in the league in ERA, FIP, and WAR. A top 3 pitching staff and top 3 offense can do massive damage in a postseason. Let’s keep winning. LFGM!

Jeff McNeil (strained left hamstring) indicated he is uninhibited in his on-field activity.

Yesterday, McNeil ran the bases. Today, he fielded grounders at second and took BP with the rest of the team.

No decision yet on a rehab assignment, but McNeil said, “I feel good.”
Was really hoping McNeil
ZGiants98 : 8/21/2019 5:06 pm : link
Wouldn’t need a rehab assignment at all. If he’s only facing the minimum 10 days I’d expect him to still be fairly sharp. Would be great if he could be in the lineup Saturday.
Agree ZG
pjcas18 : 8/21/2019 5:22 pm : link
but I'd hope they are cautious with McNeil - you know if he comes back and tweaks it the backlash will be ferocious.

Every game is a playoff game at this point, but it's not quite do or die yet.

For sure. He needs to be healthy. I just would rather him taking 4 atbats in the major than 4 atbats in the minors.
Good news on Cano

On top of taking batting practice already, he is expected to start running on Thursday. He is now expected back much sooner than his original timeframe.

Cano "start running" lol. that will be a first.

I hope Cano resurrects his season
Torrag : 8/21/2019 5:46 pm : link
He's been a second half player in recent years. That said it's just as likely that the injury derails the very short term improvement he had displayed. We'll see. Obviously he's going to play so let's hope for the best.

I think he's going to be a big game player in the bright lights. Bat him low in the order (around 7th) and I bet if we get in the postseason he has some big hits for us.

Plus, its only strengthening our bench. Lowrie, Frazier, Panik, Lagares, R. Davis, and probably Dom too is going to start looking really good.

Nimmo was a 4.5 WAR player last year and one of the best players in the NL. He needs to start if he's healthy. I do think they go to their victory formation with any lead though from about the 6th on. They can rotate Davis, Nimmo, and Conforto with who comes out and it still will give Lagares plenty of play.
They need to take an honest look at players like Nimmo and Cano

Nimmo had a .851 OPS at the time he injured his neck. He should have been IL'd right away rather than trying to play through it.

Are you getting that sense this team can do something special?

Since the break Mets are number 1 in pitching and number 4 in run production—despite a plethora of injuries and despite Diaz and Familia grossly underperforming.

Assuming JD and Rosario are for real, and assuming Nimmo and Lowrie at a minimum come back, I don’t see any team that has more talent than the Mets

Yes, but not if Diaz and Familia grossly underperform down the stretch.

Can't rely on Justin Wilson and Lugo only (plus spare parts) down the stretch.
And btw

How awesome is it that I used “plethora” in my post?
they could do something special
Eric on Li : 8/21/2019 7:08 pm : link
if they didn't have someone special calling the shots in the dugout.

My biggest concerns right now are the BP usage and the lineup decisions in terms of how these healthy vets get phased in. Rosario, Alonso, JDD, Mcneil, and Conforto are the biggest reasons for the turnaround. They took it to another level the second they became the daily top 4-5 of the lineup. The defensive downgrade of re-inserting Cano at 2B is scary enough, if he becomes an anchor in the middle of the lineup again that could be a disaster. Have to reward performance and not play favorites. Even Lagares, he has played so well in CF I wouldn't be so quick to pull him out right now. Frazier + Panik too.

Avilan:
vs. LHB: .067/.152/.100 against with a 10/3 K/BB ratio
vs. RHB: .383/.464/.533 against with a 11/6 (+3 HBP) K/BB ratio

Yet Mickey still uses him as a low leverage one inning pitcher. He is an outstanding LOOGY but he's still not being used that way.

What do we have to do with Diaz? He has three more years of control and will be 25 next year. Let him work on his slider in the offseason and try it again next year. In the postseason we will have Wheeler, Matz, Diaz, Familia, Wilson, Brach, and Lugo all as good options to choose from...

I didn't like giving Vargas away for nothing, but Lockett looked good in his last spot start. I think Oswalt pitched 7 scoreless in Syracuse in his last start. Plus we still have Ervin Santana. Not going to get much better than that for AAAA depth.
I'd go with my gut
pjcas18 : 8/21/2019 8:54 pm : link
and give Santana the start if they need to.

But with an off day, if he even has to miss a start they don't actually have to even use a 5th starter.

However, Corey Oswalt has been REALLY good since mid-July.

I just don't trust him.

Oswalt most likely, his era is under 1 in the second half. 4 of those 6 second half starts he's given up 0 runs, and the other two starts he gave up 1 run and 2 runs (oddly all 3 runs solo homers). But basically he's had a really good month.

Odd call to use 2nd best reliever on 8 + 9 hitters though. Would you rather try to throw Brach 2 innings 7th/8th against top of lineup or Familia/Lugo?

They'd have still had Diaz, Familia, Lugo, Avilan available for 6, 7, 8, 9 if the game is close no? I think I'd have thrown brach against bottom of the order and then Familia against the top of the order, hoping to get 2 out of him if he pitched well in the 6th.

doesn't seem like much more to gain from this year. I think he's around 50 for the year, no chance they bump him up another level this year. Gonna be on an innings restriction next year no matter what. May as well call it a year and plan on getting him a few tune-ups in A+ to start next year and hopefully a quick move to Binghamton for the bulk of however many innings he's capped at.

One thing you can definitely see as a flaw with Pete

is that his enthusiasm for the game which is awesome most of the time, gets the best of him other times.

as much noise as McNeil & Alonso got first half, Rosario and JDFD are giving them a run for their money in the 2nd half. This young core is something else, and maybe something special.

Great job by Mickey knowing how to get them going by letting Avilan give up that homer to Santana.

Oh it all went to the Mick's plan. Avilan. The missed DP due to pitcher not covering. Buffalo slowest infield hit ever

Another W and exciting game

Hopefully they are just being conservative. No need to push it with the way Lagares is playing.

NL Batting Average Leaders since All-Star Break

1) JD Davis .371
2) Amed Rosario .366
3) Anthony Rendon .361

Pretty damn amazing after the first halves from Alonso and McNeil. Not to mention Conforto.

Doubt it. He had his 3 atbats and played back to back. They are taking it easy on him.
Mets

in the last 10 games against playoff teams, are 7-3 (Twins, Nationals, Braves, Indians).
Rosario needs to remain the lead off hitter if/when Nimmo returns.
PhiPsi125 : 8/21/2019 11:52 pm : link
Bat McNeil second and Rosario will get even better pitches to hit.

Rosario
McNeil
Alonso
Conforto
JDFD

I prefer Conforto in front of Alonso but I guess the Lefty/Righty splits work better this way. Fill out the rest of the lineup with whatever combo of players you want but that should be the top of their lineup every game.
Hope you had fun at the game

Great game to go to. From TV seemed like a playoff atmosphere. And on a Wednesday night.

Definitely. The crowd was pretty into it even though there wasn’t much offense for much of the game. But the end of the game was rocking.

Also up to 2.5 fwar on the year and down to just -14 DRS (so he has been a net positive for the last couple months after the rough start). He appears to have really turned the corner and along with JDFD has been one of the main engines in this run.
