Is use locast.org -- It will give you local broadcast channels for NY. locast has its warts. It might kick you out of the stream every 15 minutes or so. I have exited the channel on commercials, and reloaded it.
If you are out of market, you can edit your geo-location in chrome (developer tools, console, sensors, change to NYC) and that might work. I am in NYC area, but I changed my location to SF and watched that local TV
I pay DirecTV around $1500.00 a year. The only reason why I pay for the garbage they offer (Network TV and other channels with more commercials than content) is so I can get the NFL package to watch the Giants every week. Otherwise I don't care about cable or satellite .... I can get everything I want off the internet and watch commercial free entertainment from Amazon Prime, Netflix, and the new Youtube app.
