Kurt Warner shooting his mouth off: Jones = Dalton

“They really haven’t taken their team to that next level. They take their team to a playoff level but not to a next level. That to me is what I see from Daniel Jones. Does he have that ability to truly elevate his team with his right arm at critical moments when things aren’t perfect?”
.....

“Andy Dalton is to me that kind of guy. Andy is a really good quarterback that I watch. He anticipates well, he sees things well. I really like him, but physically he’s limited where he can’t make that special throw consistently to take his team past just getting into the playoffs. That’s kind of how I see Daniel. He’s got a lot of the same traits as Andy Dalton. Really good, anticipates, sees things really well, reads things really well, accurate, all those things. But that’s what I want to see. Can he be better than an Andy Dalton, who, in his right mind, is going to have an unbelievable career and be a really, really, really good quarterback in this league for a long time. That’s the comparison I would make.”

I find it interesting that Warner thinks that he's seen enough of DJ
GeofromNJ : 8/22/2019 11:17 pm : link
to say that he's in the same league as Andy Dalton who is a good NFL quarterback. Warner's mistake seems to me is that he's judging Jones way too early in his career.

If Jones is as good as Andy Dalton, and the Giants have Barkley, Engram, Shepard, and a big fast young WR in '20, they are going to win a ring.

Not if he plays like Dalton has in the playoffs.

158 pass attempts. 1 TD and 6 picks.

That's not getting it done.

Dalton level QB play, plus Barkley, Engram, Shepard, and a plus receiver via UFA or draft ... ?

Dalton is an 8 year starter, 3 time Pro Bowler, pencil in for 14 starts a year.

If Jones has and does that, he's going to deliver a ring.

Dalton has had Andrew Whitworth, AJ Green, Tyler Eifert, Jeremy Hill, Giovanni Bernard, Mohammed Sanu, Brandon Fells, etc and it hasn't resulted in a ring.

Lol. Green is a very good receiver, and Hill and Sanu both had a productive year. Otherwise that's an entirely average set of characters.

Tyler Eifert? Yikes.

isn’t like comparing him to Tommy Maddox or something. I think some of you guys are overreacting a little bit.

Yeah... I really don't see a slight here.

I dunno, I bet when most people think of Kurt Warner, they don't even associate him with the Giants. Only Giants fans do.

I feel like I'm always sticking up for ex NFL superstars who have the gall to offer an opinion about a Giants player that isn't really even all that controversial. And I don't even really like these guys!

I guess I just think it's hysterical that the average football fan can just entirely dismiss and diminish their takes as stupid, when in reality any one of these guys can see 10x more detail when watching a play live than the average fan can see when rewatching it 5 times in slow motion.
I don't care who Warner compares to Dalton.
shockeyisthebest8056 : 8/23/2019 12:16 am : link
I just think he's wrong about what Dalton's issue has been in his inability to win playoff games. It's not a lack of physical ability. It's an inability to maintain the slightly above average play we see from him during the regular season. That's mental.

I do agree with Warner that a QB has to be able to make special throws in order to win a Super Bowl.
Why are you all getting so butt hurt?
CardinalX : 8/23/2019 1:16 am : link
The man is paid to comment. A man btw, who actually played the game at a professional level and... made the hall of fame for that play.

So yeah, he gets a pass from me. Do I agree with everything he says? Of course not. But grow up. He ain't your drunk uncle claiming to be a nuclear physicist with the cure for cancer. He's giving an opinion. And last I heard, opinions are like bellybuttons. Everybody got one.

He's not the reason that team kept losing playoff games.

I wouldn’t be. He’s exactly average. I don’t want average from the 6th overall pick

It's praise to essentially say "I think he'll be good, but not good enough" ? I don't see a lot of praise. I see Warner already putting a giant cap on Jones' ability and cutting his ceiling when there's nowhere near enough to go by to make that sort of statement.

Sounds more like a backhanded compliment to me... from a guy who has been routinely bitter towards NYG for years now.

It's just lazy and based on nothing.

That looks like praise in the first sentence. He’s saying from what he’s seen he’d compare him to Dalton and needs to see if he can be better and make the throws Dalton can’t make. That’s a fair take.

You guys just like to get angry at anyone who makes what can be construed as negative about the Giants.

We're not all "you guys" - and I don't think anyone is that angry.

Most of us just realize that Kurt has been sour towards the org for quite some time and that he often seems to have a bit of an agenda when it comes to NYG.

What he said about Jones is basically saying "that woman is pretty good looking, but I wouldn't marry her..."

It's really not much of a compliment.

at critical moments when things aren’t perfect?”

He asks a good question.

Eli has shown he can do this but he didn't even begin to show this quality until the last game of his first season against Dallas at home.

To make a judgement call after two preseason games is stupid. Warner is just shooting his mouth off.

Not sure how much more than "asking the really good question" is what Warner did in the above quote. He pegs his statement to a "what I've seen so far" caveat. Implied if not clearly noted.

I think a bunch of us are overly sensitive about Jones given the flak Gettleman and the Giants endured from national and local media after drafting him sixth overall. And frankly, who here thought Jones would look as good as he has so far based on his Duke tape?

Very, very few here were thrilled with Jones' selection at 6.

I am happy to look very wrong in my assessment of Jones based on his collegiate reumé, but the real Daniel Jones is unlikely to play in real moments until 2020. Why would any real Giants fan wish for anything else? Since Jones sitting on the bench means Eli and the team are performing well.
It isn't..

anger. It is befuddlement.

It is also a sign of the times where anything and everything can be said without having even a decent analysis to back it up.

It is only preseason, and Jones has completed 80% of his passes, so Warner's question from watching him is: Does he have that ability to truly elevate his team with his right arm at critical moments when things aren’t perfect?

How would he have any clue on that answer based on what he's seen? And if he doesn't have any clue, why is he opining on it?
I wonder what kind of QB people thought Kurt was....

Seems to me that Kurt has forgotten where he came from.

If Andy Dalton is DJ's floor
gmen9892 : 8/23/2019 9:53 am : link
I would be a very happy fan. Andy Dalton has been an average to above-average QB in this league for 8 years now, and for one reason or another hasn't taken the next step and hasn't shown the clutch gene when given the chance.

There is no way of knowing if DJ has that gene yet. This comparison is okay with me given the high amount of variables that aren't known yet.

Also, Andy Dalton never had a Running Back the caliber of Barkley in the backfield with him. Slight difference in this case.

That's what i mentioned earlier, it sounds like he's talking more about himself. Warner never had a great arm to make that one throw if he had to, which is what's so baffling about his statement.
Look i get it

these guys are paid to talk and make comparisons etc etc. But, anyone who claims to know what Jones's ability to take a team to another level is at this point is simply blowing hot air.
I'm trying to think of a QB Jones hasn't been compared to.

You know, it's funny... one of BBI's many hated bogeymen, Cris Carter, just stated this morning (or last night) that if Daniel Jones looked as good at Duke as he has in the preseason, he actually wouldn't have made it to 6. I'm looking forward to reading how his recent segment slights the Giants and was purely the result of him losing to us 41-0 18 years ago.

Kurt Warner is a bitter piece of shit. First, it was a pretty shitty thing to say about Dalton. His career isn't written yet. It isn't a compliment. You can't and never will win the big one because you are not good enough is an insult. It is also arrogant. It is the insult one that has won the championship delivers. Deadliest insult among that fraternity.
Compliments are said with the intent to make the recipient feel better. This is Warner SOP. He is trying to be shitty without taking responsibility for it.
