Stephen A. Smith is One delusional - as is in he actually thinks he knows anything about football and that anyone values his opinion.
He really has no idea what he's talking about when it comes to football. Remember back to last season when he was discussing the Chargers vs. Raiders game midseason and he talked about the key to the games. He said the game would come down to Hunter Henry vs. Derrick Johnson.
Stephen A. said that Henry was having a huge season and Derrick Johnson will have to shut him down if the Raiders will have a chance. The only problem is that Hunter Henry was injured and hadn't played a game yet while Derrick Johnson was released by the Raiders weeks before.
He's not all that good at basketball either. He's a loud voice like Skip Bayless that ESPN keeps on air because they think it drives ratings somehow.
SAS: "He brought one dimension to it that was so fierce, so intimidating, that it dwarfed everything else."
Spears: "Did you say he brought one dimension?"
SAS: "I'm saying primarily. Primarily. That's what I'm saying. That's what I'm saying. LT... All I mean by this when you think of LT what do you think about? His ability to get to the quarterback. That's all I mean by that."
I'm no SAS fan but I think he was trying to express that LT's ability to passrush overwhelmingly overshadowed the other parts of his game. He just didn't do a good job at it and Spears latched onto the "one dimension" part.
SAS said LT wasn't great at pass coverage. Max Kellerman quickly corrected SAS and said LT was great in pass coverage. SAS has zero clue about LT other than the highlights he seen. He has no ability to determine what type of player he was. He had no clue about his pass coverage skills yet he said he wasn't good at it which was simply not true. SAS was flying blind about a subject once again.
The problem with SAS is ESPN overpays him and forces him into debates where he has to offer opinions on sports he has little clue about. He has little knowledge about sports beyond basketball and many find his knowledge about even basketball lacking now.
He was often the deepest guy playing Goal-Line free safety because he had the best sideline-to-sideline tackling range of anybody on the team. A team that was loaded in the back 7.
I dont think any premier pass rushing LB wouldve been out in that spot on those Giants teams.
People focus too much on the way LT rushed the passer, the most impressive thing about him was his relentless pursuit and ability to make a tackle anywhere. His closing speed hasnt been replicated by a LBer since, only elite Safeties like Polamalu have something similar.
used to grouse that LT wasn't a real linebacker because he didn't drop back in coverage, he was always rushing. LT did sometimes cover downfield but not as much as the Steelers' guys and the 4-3 LBs before him. I think that LT essentially changed the position. It's like Ty Cobb hating on Babe Ruth. Guy changed the game, get over it.
If that's what Smith is talking about: I wouldn't say he has a point but he's not the first to voice that idea. But I think it's sort of willfully ignorant. "One-dimensional" is not how I would describe probably the greatest defender in football history.
Well, there was that 97-yd TD int. return against the Lions....

This. A lot of it you could only appreciate in person. Hed rush the passer, the ball would get thrown downfield, and hed turn around and pursue the receiver who was maybe 20 yards away when he starts. 99 times out of 100 the receiver is brought down before he gets there, but that other time he makes an incredible tackle.

Thank you for the context. This makes more sense. I'm no Stephen A fan, either.
with Pat Summerall. LT was hurt and not playing and the Giants front seven was less than overpowering. Madden said, "I use to think the Giants had a great defense, but I'm beginning to think it's just Lawrence Taylor and ten other guys."

Everyone the Cowboys draft jumped off the screen to him when he saw them play in college and they got a steal.
I put on ESPN - not ESPN News or ESPNU or ESPN2 - and they were showing marble racing. Marbles racing down winding hot wheels type tracks with a play by play commentator.
So this SAS lunacy is just another endless example demonstrating how ESPN has mastered the art of shark jumping...
Seriously, LT's 'weakest' facet was pass defense, and he was an excellent pass defender.
Maybe later in his career, he'd lost a step and wasn't as disruptive but Jesus, through the early 80's, it was a serious error to throw anywhere NEAR him.
My favorite LT play is when he is "blocked" seals off the edge, and then cintorting his body goes diving like a maniac at the HBs ankles. Imagine if your the HB and you see LT do this trying to compound fracture your ankles, no wonder he made opposing players consider retirement

If it's not already, I expect "E gaming" to be a big thing. They don't have hockey ffs.
buy into the anti-Giant bias, but you have to ask yourself, do these idiots take stances like this on other players? Would we hear that Ray Lewis was one-dimensional? Reggie White?

One of the many reasons I stopped watching ESPN year ago.

I had this poster on my wall👍

It's incredible how bad ESPN has gotten.
Should take his own advice and STAY OFF THE WEEEEED
Reminds me why I dont watch anything ESPN does unless the Giants are on MNF. Bruuuutal
Hes a Steeler fan, I believe.
He signed his name and "I'm a bad mother fucker"
Yes you were sir.
Instantly became my favorite piece of memorabilia.
Meanwhile, Screamin' A. continues to be a complete and utter moron on all things non-basketball...and a simple idiot on basketball.

Yeah he actually started to walk off the set after that idiocy by Stephen A

I'm not kidding. I was in Portland and they had School Bus Racing, Followed by Tetris Championships followed by that incredibly stupid marble shit!

But then it came out of Smith's mouth, and turned into garbage can water.
It was like running "Model Train Scenery by Sheldon" as a program.
Interesting comparison... in what ways are they similar?

the school bus racing. The marble thing was literally something set up in a guy's basement, with the "track" surrounded by marble spectators.

It's like CNN and their fake sets and reporters reporting in from "different" locations.
You love making this same comment in various contexts on multiple threads and everyone knows it has a political undercurrent.
