What happened to Hakeem Nicks?

jimvinct : 8/22/2019 10:40 pm
It makes you realize how short these careers are. I thought we would see 10 years of Romo/Bryant vs Eli/Nick's and it just never materialized. That postseason he put together on the way to sb46 was incredible.

Steve Smith and Kenny Phillips are core players who had similar rapid declines - all three were core players. I know we all primarily follow the Giants, but can you recall other teams losing such important players to injury so quickly?

The Giants went from two super bowls in 4 years to completely abysmal for the second half of Eli's career. It really is a shame, and makes you appreciate those teams who have been consistently successful over the years.

Nicks - ( New Window )
He developed a serious lower body vascular condition that

really took away from his ability. Was never really the same after that.

The Giants have had some incredible misfortune with receivers. Burress, Steve Smith, Nicks, Cruz, to a lesser extent Manningham, and now the Beckham saga. There might be one but off the top of my head I can't think of another team that has had a comparable run of unfortunate events at one spot.
As

the video notes, his career was ruined by injuries. It's an all too common story in the NFL. He lost his explosiveness, and it never came back.
I know they was not a receivers

but also David Wilson and Chad Jones
A shame too

True that.
He didn’t even last long enough for a large second contact

Stories like his make it difficult to criticize players holding out (e.g., Leveon, Zeke, etc.).
He could have hung on as a possession guy
Poktown Pete : 8/22/2019 10:58 pm : link
but he not only lost his explosiveness, he lost his hands AND seemed to develop alligator arms too. I guess his injuries messed with his confidence. I remember how his huge hand size was made to be such a bit thing when he was drafted. Seems after he got hurt he couldn't hang onto the ball anymore. Odd.
Possession guys

Still need to get open. I don't think he was able to create much separation after his leg injury(ies)

Crick, good point. I just couldn't understand when the ball did come his way why he couldn't hang onto it, or extend his arms for it. Something else was wrong.

Lack of confidence perhaps

we assume longevity as the rule when it is the exception

e.g., the assumption is beckham will be a force for 7 more years. the more likely scenario is in 3 hes washed up. it happens fast and it shouldnt surprise anyone.
His vascular condition was in 2010...
sb from NYT Forum : 8/23/2019 1:16 am : link
...and he recovered from that to dominate in the 2011 regular season and playoffs.

Unfortunately he hurt his knee on the last play of the best game of his career in 2nd game of 2012. 10 catches for 199 yards and he was never the same after that last play. Just really sad because he was so great.

Reese gets deserved flak but Nicks was a great pick.

His vascular "condition" was compartment syndrome and it has caused lasting nerve damage that left him with numbness in the leg. Whenever his injuries are brought up, that seems to get minimized.

A WR with numbness in the lower leg is going to have a tough time competing.

Then you look at Fitz wtf? Really a head scratcher all our receivers couldn't recover from their injuries in this day and age. Philly likely crippled Smith.

Nicks was pretty much a consensus bbi media pundit draft pick fingers crossed for Giants. At least we should be thankful Reese didn't pull his patented look I'm smarter than everyone fucking else move.
I just saw this video
mrvax : 8/28/2019 11:10 am : link
and lucky for me, I did a search before posting on BBI.

Eli was incredible in 2011 but you could make a good argument that it was Hakeem Nicks' fault that the Giants had a Super Bowl winning season in 2011.

If you haven't seen this already, enjoy and let's hope he can play in the XFL at only age 32.
Injuries robbed him

injuries happen in football. The play where the Tampa DB wrecked his leg ...
