Jones was ranked second among draft eligible QBs by PFF behind only Kyler Murray, for performance on pressured pass attempts, and he was pressured more often than many of the top prospects. So playing in a dirty pocket with bodies coming at him isn’t something foreign to him. I think it’s a matter of whether the quarterback sees the pressure or not. If he gets blindsided it’s hard to put it on the QB.
yup. What I saw in games was he can take hits, throw while getting plastered, honestly that Clemson game was worse for him than SF for Eli
That's why I find it funny that people are so surprised when he does what he does, or that he "can't" do things he's already shown, just at the NFL level. The talk of 'no pressure' in preseason, sure it's valid. But lets not act like he hasn't handled a shitload of pressure before. Having seen it at Duke, has to help him translate that skill to the NFL level more than those who haven't, even independent of the results (which weren't bad anyway iirc)
Again no guarantees, but he's done A LOT of what we're seeing him do now. And to me certainly speaks positively to translating to the NFL when shit gets real
It’s funny, I watched that Clemson game and got more excited about Jones than I probably did from his highlights..and stats were nothing in that game..he was getting his ass handed to him repeatedly....but the hits didn’t phase him. There was a great quote from one of his teammates about Jones in that game, about how some of the Duke players were getting down and Jones just kept playing his ass off until the game was over. Lawson’s a great player and he absolutely hammered Jones, and for Jones to come right back he very next play and stand in the face of pressure, take another hit and deliver that strike to Slayton just was more evidence of his toughness in the pocket, that was the play of the game to me.
over and over and lose...but that's not quite all that was visible from DJ in that Clemson game. And of course far from the only game he's shown that kind of toughness, and of course FAAAR from his best game in terms of #s & production
I didn't read that quote, but it makes total sense from what my eyes saw. Honestly, I thought he was 'more unflappable' than Eli...at least of late (fwiw watching a few games of course)
I woulda shat all over my OL all game. If not just be dead
any other prospect this year. Size too. Lock may have been the only other Good fit. From last year, maybe Darnold or Rosen.
Imagine Haskins in Shurmur’s offense. Worse fit than Eli.
What do you do when there is no fit between QB and the HC’s offense? It is called a “McAdoo”.
Was ARIZONA out of its mind to pick a HC just based on his offense and scheme fit to the consensus #1 pick?
So here's my controversial statement of the day:
Arizona with Kliff Kingsbury is the only team in the NFL that thought Murray was worth the #1 overall pick. 31 of the other 32 teams in the NFL would've looked at Bosa or Quinnen Williams first.
RE: He would have gone second overall in my view Â
He’s shown enough these last 3 games where one of the teams, giants possibly included, would have moved up to get him.
Isn’t it funny and ironic that the giants very well may have gotten the last laugh on another qb that they never should have drafted? It’s 2004 all over again. Good stuff.
Maybe the “analysts”, funny word, since most don’t analyze shit they just stir shit up, should actually analyze things before they talk shit.
That's still pretty high. I don't think a few series in preseason change the assessment of a player all that much.
I think this is right. My guess is most NFL organizations would look at DJ's preseason success as some affirmation that he belongs in the NFL. So you'd feel better about the downside. But it's not enough to say, "Hey, this is the next Elway, Luck, PMannning, etc...have to go all out to draft him..."
Give me a 6'4" or "5 QB who weighs around 230 lbs ... over a 5'9" scrambler any day. I don't trust that style of play. And, To be honest I had no idea who DJ was at the time but, I said that before the draft.
Among others, QBs of a similar style - they had RG III fitted for his gold jacket in college. Where is he now? Is he even in the league?
The accurate pocket passer is still winning SBs today. I can't see Kyle Murray's game from the pocket? He is to short. He will have to move outside on probably every passing play to see the field? Sooner or later they will catch him ... hard.
escapability at Duke. He is very smart and learns from experience. He had to learn with the pressure he was getting with that team game after game. It shows now . He seems to sees the field from all angles quickly and his quickness allows him to take advantage of that getting rid of the ball or using his good wheels to get away. ELI did not have that advantage when he lost his good OL. Thats why we went down the tubes these past years.
RE: RE: RE: Poor receivers at Duke really screwed Jones rating. Â
They dropped more balls than anyone else not to mention their athleticism to get open at all. Duke is a basketball first school. everyone knows that. Talented FB players do knot consider even going there. We were Lucy to get Jones at all from what we have seen so far. Great job by DG and his staff in the last 2 drafts.
The Duke offensive targets had several drops -- but 2 of Jone's WRs from his last year at Duke are on NFL rosters right now.
Let's not make it out like he was playing with a pack of no ones.
Not one single player from Duke while Daniel Jones was playing there was drafted. ZERO!!
So, you can talk about 2 wide receivers on teams right now, but they were undrafted. T.J Rahming was cut by the Redskins. Let me say that again..,the wide receiver deficient Redskins cut him and he was signed by the dolphins 3 days ago.
Let's see what Duke wide receivers remain on a teams roster after the cut downs and then talk.
Touch a nerve or something there buddy?
My post was in response to the quote:

Talentless guys don't get a cup of coffee in NFL camps.
If you want to make the point the offensive line, or other players were talentless, that's more intellectually honest.
how it plays out, but what do we know now at this point in time?
A hell of a lot more than pre-draft. Isn’t that the basis of this thread? I don’t know why people (not you just in general) can’t let fans be excited for a change. He’s exceeded expectations thus far. That’s a fact, why not look at this optimistically?
RE: RE: I don't believe he was ever getting out of the Top 10... Â
based on the information that filtered out after the Draft ie Cutcliffe comments, the warroom video that surfaced etc. We took him at #6 so ultimately there wouldn't have been much difference.
what warroom video?
Bills (like the Colts) had a YouTube series similar to Finding Giants and they had a deal in place with Cincinnati that got called off as soon as the Giants took Jones
That some of you actually believe that teams don’t put any emphasis on preseason.
Try selling that pearl of wisdom to Pete Carroll and the seahawks who literally benched the highly paid vet qb (Flynn) for the 3rd round rookie in russel Wilson after just three preseason games!!!
History. Fun.
Preseason is pretty much useless in terms of overall team play but teams use it to gauge their players. It’s never going to determine future result but cmon guys! It does mean a lot. Gms and coaches are cutting guys based on the preseason. They are formulating the teams.
Jones has built up a lot of street cred these last 2 months or so. If you don’t see it you don’t want to see it. Wake up
are ones it was claimed he couldn’t really make when we drafted him. Preseason doesn’t have anything to do with his touch, accuracy, arm strength, etc. It isn’t some stretch to think his stock has risen given the throws he’s been making, often in tight coverage.
With this talk of jones being a reach has been fans refusal to see the simplest and most telling point in all of this: if DG loved Jones, he had to have believed that someone else loved Jones. That’s sure as hell how I would treat the draft. That’s exactly how we all treat fantasy football drafts isn’t it? See player, love player, fear that someone else loves that same player. Draft player ASAP.
You telling me that if ONE team was even on the fence back in March, let’s say Denver, then witnessed jones exhibit all these skills throughout the Summer, they aren’t moving heaven and earth to draft jones if they had a do-over?
NFL combines have absolutely swayed teams into loving or hating an nfl prospect. Guys running around in underwear. But two months of real life NFL data mean nothing. Just precious.
dumbass.

I would've taken Ed Oliver.

The next pick I would've takne Andre Dillard:

In 2nd round I would've traded for Josh Rosen.
https://dolphinswire.usatoday.com/2019/08/24/next-gen-stats-compares-dolphins-qb-contenders-after-3-preseason-games/
Have no idea what will turn out. But the Op asked. ANd I wouldn't have done anything different than what I said above.
I would have been completely happy if we went this direction. That said I am happy with the Jones pick.
Imagine Haskins in Shurmur’s offense. Worse fit than Eli.

Only way #2 overall is if the Niners picked 3.

Not sure the Chiefs would agree with me though.
