Kay had a good point, so much white in the stands he lost the smash in the crowd. As far as the DP, He forgot the outs. His base running is meh at best, but he is so good, it can pass.

Didn't connect the remark about all the white out there as background with the miss on the ball. It's a good point so I take my snark about that one back.

WPIX feed(?). It caught the very front edge of the plate on the overhead camera and the camera is a little left of center which brings it more over the plate if brought to the right. One way or another, it was not a bad call IMV.

That was exactly my take on it too. Even if Jansen did ask he can't be granted it while the play is on going. Plus he was facing second and neither the 2B or 3B ump granted the TO. No idea why the HP ump did, but he sure as hell shouldn't have.

Doesn't matter. He doesn't have to give him the TO just because he asked for it. It's up to the ump to decide if the play is still going on,which if was.

Very much like when a batter asks for a TO. If the ump thinks he asked too late and the pitcher is in his motion, he doesn't have to give the TO.

This seemed right to me at the time, player was in motion as a runner at the time. If you can't call timeout under that circumstance, then what? Is it up to the home ump as chief field judge even though he was the offender so that the runner is returned to the base he's already left instead of having his run scored? That can't be right.
You cannot be granted time,
section125 : 8/24/2019 7:41 pm : link
even with an injured player on the field, if the play is continuing. Jansen asked for time, and I suppose the HP ump did not see Torres running.

I would be a lot more concerned with the dumbass play
by Didi (TWICE), trying to bunt with a 3-1 count, then
whether the HP ump called time (which he did).
Who the hell bunts on a 3-2 pitch??
Then to be honest, both Tauchman and Sanchez choked,
both went up their hacking away, and were both in a
0-2 hole, they blew the 9th inning, game over.

Watch the replay, HP ump was calling time, just before Torres was running down the line, just saying.

Be interesting what Boone says about it.

It was a good game, despite the Yanks leaving runners on again.

It was close, I suppose. I though he was moving toward home.

Unfortunately the Yankee players didn’t execute, but they did at least make it interesting.... Gardner can run....

I’m sure I’m not saying anything new here, just getting it off my chest....

1. The dude bunting didn’t have to be so cute....there was no one near 3b. Just lay it down safely

2. The second out was the big killer...not getting wood

3. The last out...Jansens fastball was about 94 so it’s not like it was so fast to make it unhittable, but when you get down 0-2, it’s tough. I really can’t find fault with him nearly as much as the other two.

It looked like all of Jansens pitches were high up in the zone. It seems to me if you know that this might give you a slight advantage. Oh well. There seemed to be at least 1/3 Yankee fans there. Great atmosphere. I hope these teams play in the WS. I’m sure the Braves and Astros don’t hope for such.

Unbelievable

Bryan Hoch
@BryanHoch
Max Muncy said he was doing a little "soccer" move at 2B so the umps would call time and not allow Gleyber to score.

"He still got me good, it still hurt, so it wasn't entirely fake, but there might have been a little acting class in there."

Torres (or the 3B coach) didn't have the wherewithal to continue running home instead of holding up at 3B. Anyway, I was confident that Tauchman was going to get the run in. Frustrating loss, but fortunately the Rays got their nads handed to them by the lowly O's. Turn the page--tomorrow is another day.
good game

would have been better if the zebras didn't get in the way - again.

Whatever. Have to go through them i suppose.

"View from 314 ft" shows Torres running before any indication of time out. Poor, poor job by the umpires, especially in that the guy granting TO was the HP umpire looking out at the field and should have see Torres running. Why Boone didn't protest is beyond me.
A protest..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/25/2019 7:50 am : link
is nearly guaranteed to not work because it still falls under the umbrella of a judgment call. The ump used terrible judgment, but appeals/protests are meant to resolve instances where rules were broken.

As I keep asking all year long - just get the frigging calls right!

You won't win a protest on a judgment call and that's technically what this was. An ump's decision to grant the TO that in his judgment was granted while the play was over.

He was obviously wrong but unfortunately I think the Yanks only chance was if this was allowed to be reviewed like the rest of the play.

Just one more instance of the Yanks getting umped again, and it's really, really getting rediculous.

Isn't calling time out during an ongoing play an incorrect application of a rule? This is not missing a call, or calling a ball, a strike, etc - a judgement call. This is misapplication of a rule for granting a timeout. The ump granted Jansen a timeout with Torres running toward home.

I don't strongly disagree with you as it is sticky and while we will never hear from the league, Torres was in motion toward home before time was called.

And nothing will happen, nor can it.

I'm right there with both of you on this but Section I think the ump's judgment comes into play by in his opinion the play was dead and not ongoing.

I'd bet his explanation was something like the TO was called and granted before Torres started for home, even though the signal for it came while he was on his way to the plate.

I was trying to find the rule, but there isn't one. But the ump can call time whenever he feels it is necessary. However, he told Boone Jansen requested it and that is why he called it. Had he thought Muncy being down required time, that would be one thing, but him saying Jansen asked for it makes him wrong for granting it.
Video evidence shows Torres moving toward home before Jansen asked for it.

Totally agree man. Just because time is asked for doesn't mean it has to be granted, and the ump blew this one by granting it.

It's very similar to me how when a batter asks for time while in the box. It's up to the ump to grant it and we've all seen times where an ump doesn't because in his judgment the play is in progress and the pitch counts.

The problem yesterday though was once he does grant the TO that's it there's no taking it back, even if it was granted in error and no recourse for the Yanks.
Yeah..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/25/2019 9:16 am : link
that's the rub - it is still just an umpire judgment. The Yanks would have grounds for a protest if a rules violation happened, but this is just an unfortunate call where the ump inexplicably granted time with a base runner still moving.

Yeah, the more I look, the more I agree. Just an absolute eff up by the umps with no recourse except an apology letter that will never be sent.

Gardner raised his hands to call time
Tim in JTown : 8/25/2019 10:42 am : link
At the point where Torres was off the bag at third but not yet running home, Gardner seems to raise his hands, possibly calling for time. I think the home plate ump saw that and called time. Still, the second base ump was right there looking directly at Gardner and didn't call time.

It was Jansen that called time.
Muncy’s Explanation Adds Some Spice
pivo : 8/25/2019 2:05 pm : link
He took the low road to save the lead:

"If I'm acting like I was hurt, they have to stop the play," Muncy said. "It's more just hoping they call it. If I get up and act like I'm not hurt, [Torres is] safe at home plate. One of those things. He still got me good, it still hurt, so it wasn't entirely fake, but there might have been a little acting class in there."
