All the talk about Shurmur putting Jones in a position to succeed to discredit Jones's performance. However, that's true to an extent but it's more of a credit to Shurmur than a discredit of Jones. Manning, Lauletta, and even Tanney at times have looked very solid in the preseason. Yeah yeah yeah, it's preseason but for years we've sucked in the preseason. I think there are legit gripes to have with Shurmur, but it looks like he's doing exactly what he was put here to do and considering we're going to have a young QB to groom, the hire fits like a glove. I can live with some time management brain farts and maybe some not amazing moments with the media if he excels in this part of coaching.
Also, notice how much better the O was last year when the O-line became NFL quality second half of the season.
You can't deny that he has his players playing hard. They never quit which is an often overlooked quality in a HC. I expect this team to win 7-9 games this season. I predict a big improvement in every area and a playoff run in 2020 with Jones in his first full season as HC.
I don't know whether there's an NFL equivalent of a "bench coach" but IIRC, R** H*****y's role with Parcells was clock management, etc. That's part of why they thought so highly of him. So there's some precedent for the Giants to rely on an assistant coach for some in-game management.
This says what I’m thinking too. I am very happy with him and expect he will also grow in his role as coach.

and Coach. He knows how to improve offenses, but the jury is still out on his game management skills as a Head Coach IMO. He can lose games this way too. If he can improve in that area then I think he’ll be a fairly successful Head Coach. I like him and he truly cares about the players. I hope he succeeds this year.
Every player and coach has strengths and weaknesses. One of the marks of someone who is really good is the ability recognize his own weaknesses, work on them and seek help where necessary. I think Shurmur has that ability.

I wasn't a TC fan when he was hired. But he won my respect by showing that he could change and grow (esp for an old guy like me).
I do agree the in-game coaching needs to improve. That was his biggest issue in year one here. But he's also a really good offensive coach and I think he is the right guy to have develop Jones in the early going.
This gives hope for improvement.

If media interviews were an important part of coaching, Belichick would be a bottom tier coach IMO.
Whoa...that is indeed a red flag. Can’t believe Shurmur doesn’t know where the sky is.
