NFT: Advice Wanted - setting up home security system

EdS56 : 8/24/2019 8:38 pm
Cheers!

So I got one of the do it yourself systems. I've got a bunch of contact sensors and one motion sensor. Some detectors. Question... Most of my accesses will be either from the front windows main level, back windows or sliding glass door basement level, or the sliding door in the back family room.

The motion detector I'm not sure where to place. I think contact sensors in the windows and door down below and where they can get in.

Maybe the motion sensor in an area there won't be windows being broken into? Where did you put yours?

And no, I'm not asking this to break into your house :)
We have enough crap, and just donated a bunch today, thanks!
Usually they cover areas with ground floor windows/glass doors

If a burglar breaks the glass and climbs thru the opening rather than raising the window/sliding the door, the contact sensors won’t trigger. The motion sensors will.

I didn’t bother putting contact sensors on all the windows. I just used motion sensors and glass break sensors to cover the windows and sliding doors.

Sounds like a security nightmare with access from multiple avenues on different levels. I would place my motion detector either in main room prior to getting to the hall way leading to the bed rooms or on the level that is sperate from the sleeping areas. You have to think that it will be your last line of defense from automated system since they must have already breached your contacts and locks without alerting you by that point.
Some other tips

replace the short screws on the strike plates for your doors with 3 inch ones into the framing. Valuable jewelry the type you wear on rare occasions put in a ziplock bag put it under the insulation in your attic somewhere or unscrew a ac/heat vent and reach down the line somewhere and leave it there. I took reports for a lot of burglaries in NYC and at least 90% were front door kicks followed by trip to master bedroom were they flipped mattresses and emptied bedroom furniture drawers. If you have an unfinished basement use your imagination when hiding down there also the last place a burglar wants to be is a basement or attic.

most smash and grab burglaries are in and gone before the cops get there and since they know they're in hurry wiht yje alarm ringing they destroy the place quicker. Spend some money on a good, visible, camera system. Almost as good a deterrent as a dog and you'll be notified instantly when someone sets foot on your property and you'll have visual evidence to boot.
