Hope this isn’t a violation of rules, really hope this doesn’t go sideways b/c I know some folks here know this topic and I need advice. Mrs. Trueblue wants to get trained in basic firearms, rifle and pistol safety, handling and use. I can’t really figure out where to start. I’ve been on the NRA website and some Long Island training sites but the classes say NY Pistol permit required. Does NYS require a permit for training?
Any thoughts and recommendations on how to go about getting started with this? I’ll call around to various clubs, etc. but not really sure what to look for and ask about.

I'm in MA, not NY, but similar states in terms of fire arms and I found a course at my local rod and gun club I took and then got my concealed carry permit in MA.
good luck, it's nice your wife is interested in taking advantage of her 2nd amendment rights.
Talk about Catch 22 - you need a conceal carry permit before you learn how to use it? People laugh at FL, but you have to prove you can handle a pistol(even if it is just a few rounds) before you can get the permit, it is part of the training to pass the required class. I'd bet that is true in most states.
In the class, they go over safety, maintenance, handling, and laws. We also shot at targets as part of the training.
With my long guns, I had to fill out a basic background check form with each purchase.
Anyway, we have a call into Phase Three and hope to get the download from them and some others I found online. I’ll let you guys know how things go but also really want to respect the no politics rule. Appreciate the insights all!

I think you have it backwards, at least for Massachusetts and I believe NY is the same.
First, the only permit most civilians can get in MA is concealed carry. They do not allow open carry like say Texas or other states.
Second, you have to take the safety course BEFORE you can get a permit. It's part of the application process. And in MA at least and I imagine NY is the same, you can go to a range/gun club/other business and get trained without a permit.
You only need a permit to a: buy a firearm b: buy ammo and c: carry
lastly, and even without being an NRA member (I am not one) they have resources to tell you how your municipality is classified. they use a red/green rating on how difficult your town is for issuing permits.
Mine is considered a green town, that meant all I had to do was basically pass the background check and the police chief uses that as the sole determinant in whether to issue a permit or not. Other cities (like where my buddy lives in Natick) they draw the process out much longer and are maybe more thorough and look for reasons to deny a permit.
Hope this helps (and I hope it's true for NY)
And give the NCPD Pistol License Section a call if you have questions.

Yahtzee! Just what I needed. Thanks.
So you can't even own a handgun in your home or buy ammo without a CCP?? Is that really true in NY?
