Per & #8294;& #8234;SportsInfo SIS& #8236;& #8297;, Jones had a 120.4 passer rating in a clean pocket last year, and that plummeted to 52.0 under pressure. Giants have done a god job getting his first reads open and making him comfortable. It's important for his development

Bank The Sports Bank: Keys to Julian Love Finding Success with the New York Giants

“Notre Dame defensive backs coach Todd Lyght is the mentor of all mentors to Julian Love, and during Notre Dame Media this past week, he shared his vision of a bright future for Love with the Giants.
“I think Julian will have a great career with New York,” said Lyght on Wednesday afternoon.
“He’s a great teammate, he loves the game of football, he studies the game, works extremely hard at perfecting fundamentals and technique, has a great understanding of schemes and concepts and having a natural feel for the game, being able to read route combinations and react to what the offense is giving him.”
Love has been playing mostly inside, but also a little bit outside this preseason
“As the season wears on, there will be a lot of opportunities for him to play all over the secondary, and I know that he’ll add a lot of value to that group and make a lot of plays and win a lot of football games with the New York Giants.”

Volin Boston Globe: Sunday Football Note:
Patriots facing difficult roster decisions this week

“Coaches and general managers won’t just take a player’s football abilities into account. It’s a large factor, but so are a player’s financials — how much the team already has paid him, how he fits into the team’s salary cap, and the cap consequences of cutting a player.
One of the biggest considerations is whether a player is a “vested veteran” — someone with four or more years of NFL service. Vested veterans get their entire 2019 salary guaranteed if they are on the Week 1 roster. But this can work against them, too. Players with three or fewer seasons do not have such guarantees and offer more financial flexibility, as they don’t get paid for a week unless they are on the roster at 4 p.m. each Tuesday.

“The Browns are doing their best to tick off the rest of the league. Baker Mayfield told Complex Sports two weeks ago that “people want to see us lose, just because the hype is so real.” Then this past week, GQ published an interview in which Mayfield seemed to rip the Giants for drafting Daniel Jones with the No. 6 overall pick.
Browns first-year coach Freddie Kitchens tried to deflect the attention.
“I don’t know what a bull’s-eye is. Anybody know?” he said. “If they’re not trying to beat our ass and we’re not trying to beat their ass, I don’t know what else you do. Our team’s going to block out the noise. You guys create noise, they’re going to block it out. GQ creates the noise, they’re going to block it out. Sports Illustrated creates the noise, they’re going to block it out. I have total confidence they’ll block out the noise.”
On paper, the Browns look stacked — give Bill Belichick this roster, and he’d go 16-0. But this is still the Browns, where things always go wrong. Kitchens will either be a coaching genius this year, or this will all blow up spectacularly.”

That fear isn’t necessary. Only about 3% of the ~1,184 players who were waived in final cuts last year immediately got claimed

Barnwell ESPN: Realistic 2019 goals for the NFL's 10 worst teams

“New York Giants
FPI chance to make the playoffs: 9.9%
Get ownership away from the quarterback position. One of the reasons the Giants have become a laughingstock over the past two seasons is how ownership has meddled publicly and privately in the team's quarterback decision-making. Owner John Mara insisted that the Giants weren't tanking when they benched Eli Manning for Geno Smith in 2017, only for ownership to see the fan base's visceral reaction to the Manning move and reverse it the following week, firing coach Ben McAdoo and general manager Jerry Reese in the process.
Now, with the Giants drafting Daniel Jones in the top 10, Mara is back in the news by publicly suggesting how Manning would start all 16 games "in a perfect world" for the Giants in 2019. Coach Pat Shurmur then publicly agreed with Mara in a news conference.

Here are two things I know. One is that organizations say they're going to sit their rookie quarterbacks for as long as possible before the season, only to invariably stick them into the lineup at the first sign of their veteran incumbent slipping. The other is that nothing good ever comes from ownership getting involved in personnel decisions for nostalgia's sake. If Shurmur wants to sit Jones all season and play Manning for 16 games, that should be his decision without any interference or public quotes from Mara.
Find a pass-rusher. While general manager Dave Gettleman has attempted to rebuild the Giants around the sort of running game and physicality the team enjoyed during the Bill Parcells era, he has curiously neglected to find the sorts of pass-rushers the Giants have been built around for decades. Gettleman used Olivier Vernon as a trade chip to acquire another offensive lineman this offseason in Cleveland's Kevin Zeitler, and while the Giants used a first-round pick on nose tackle Dexter Lawrence, their other key moves to address the edge were signing former Cardinals standout Markus Golden and using a third-round pick on Oshane Ximines.

Golden has the best pedigree of the three, given that the former second-rounder racked up 12.5 sacks in his sophomore campaign with the Cardinals, but injuries limited him to 2.5 sacks over the ensuing 15 games. He is signed to only a one-year deal, so New York probably would prefer 2018 third-round pick Lorenzo Carter to make the leap after generating four sacks and 10 knockdowns as a rookie, given that the Giants have him under contract through 2021. They need one of these guys to break through before making a bigger addition at the position (Jadeveon Clowney?) next offseason.”

Brandt NFL.com: Most, least enviable QB situations

“4) New York Giants

Rostered QBs: Eli Manning, Daniel Jones, Alex Tanney, Kyle Lauletta.
It's exceedingly difficult to land a quarterback of Jones' ability without sacrificing a king's ransom to move up for a high draft choice, but Gettleman seized the opportunity in front of him with the sixth overall pick. To me, this situation is looking similar to the Packers' transition from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers, or the Chiefs' transition from Alex Smith to Patrick Mahomes. Jones isn't quite ready yet, as his latest effort -- which included two lost fumbles against the Bears -- showed. But that's OK, because Manning, who looked sharp against Chicago, has at least two years left in him, by my estimation. Meanwhile, Jones has also had moments of brilliance, demonstrating his athletic ability and showing off a level of accuracy that is probably better than what we were led to believe during his time at Duke. In fact, I think Jones is a little bit ahead of where Rodgers was at this point in his career. Whenever Jones does take the torch from Manning, I expect him to do big things -- and the many critics who dogged general manager Dave Gettleman for selecting Jones that high will owe him an apology.”

McClain Houston Chronicle: Jadeveon Clowney on his way out of town?

“I believe the Texans are going to trade outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney for an offensive tackle when he signs his franchise tender.
They should try to get a running back thrown into the deal to replace Lamar Miller, who suffered a knee injury in the first quarter of Saturday night’s 34-0 loss to Dallas and had to be carted off the field.

I think coach Bill O’Brien, the de facto general manager, has a deal worked out with another team, but he can’t complete the trade until Clowney is under contract. He’s due to make $15.97 million this season after he signs the tender.
“Until he decides to come in and sign his tender, the ball’s in his court relative to playing for the Texans,” O’Brien said after Saturday’s loss. “Until he signs the tender, there’s not much to talk about. I don’t have any idea of a specific date that he’ll decide if he wants to be here.
“(With) any trade, you’re always looking at the value of the trade relative to your team and your future team. And sometimes in different trades you have to give up a little more to get what you want. With JD, it’s up to him when he wants to sign the tender, and then we’ll all go from there.”
The Texans have talked to a lot of teams about Clowney. Miami was interested three weeks ago. Might still be. There are a lot of reports about the Texans trading Clowney to the Dolphins, but Miami would have to part with left tackle Laremy Tunsil, their best offensive player and one of the two best players on the team.

There were reports Saturday the Dolphins wouldn’t trade Tunsil. He’s too valuable to their rebuild.
Tunsil was the 13th overall pick in the 2016 draft. He got embarrassed when a video leaked of him smoking marijuana in a gas mask, but he weathered that storm and hasn’t had an issue since he arrived in Miami.
Tunsil, who turned 25 earlier this month, has been a starter on the left side in each of his three seasons.
His base salary this season is $2.1 million. The team can pick up his fifth-year option in 2020 for $10.3 million.
If not Tunsil, then another left tackle, but who?
Many of you want to know why?
The Texans are trying to win the AFC South again. Their chances increased Saturday when it was disclosed that injured Indianapolis quarterback Andrew Luck is retiring. O’Brien has to maximize Clowney’s trade value to ensure he makes the right move to help them successfully defend their division title.
The Texans never are going to sign Clowney to a long-term contract, so they’re going to unload him for what could amount to a fire sale at this time of the year depending on whom they get in return.
O’Brien better get a left tackle that causes fans to say, “Aha, that’s why they did it!” If not, O’Brien will get widespread criticism, and team chairman Cal McNair will hear cries of, “The Texans must hire a general manager!”
I think the Texans’ defense will absorb a colossal hit without Clowney. He’s the team’s second-best defensive player behind J.J. Watt and, along with quarterback Deshaun Watson and receiver DeAndre Hopkins, one of the team’s four biggest stars.
Watt and Clowney are the defense’s only disruptive forces who strike fear in offensive coordinators who have to game-plan for them. Without Clowney to worry about, those offensive coordinators will lose only one night of sleep before they play the Texans.
Without Clowney, offenses can direct more attention to Watt. Without Clowney, his replacement, Brennan Scarlett, will be under enormous pressure to produce better than at any time in his four-year career.
And there will be even more pressure on outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus to bounce back in the last year of his contract and join Watt as a defensive player who can get to the quarterback.
Without Clowney, imagine the strain on Romeo Crennel’s defense when the Texans play their first six games against quarterbacks Drew Brees (New Orleans), Nick Foles (Jacksonville), Philip Rivers (Los Angeles Chargers), Cam Newton (Carolina), Matt Ryan (Atlanta) and Patrick Mahomes (Kansas City).
Imagine the relief those teams will feel knowing they won’t have to worry about Clowney, which will allow them to focus more on Watt.
Trading for a left tackle is understandable. O’Brien wants to acquire as much protection as possible for Watson. He’s their most valuable commodity, and O’Brien has to do everything within his power to maximize his quarterback’s productivity.
We thought the Texans took significant steps toward solving their problem when they used first- and second-round picks on offensive tackles Tytus Howard and Max Scharping. Howard and Scharping are starting, but it’s at guard, not tackle.
Howard has been out the past two games with a fractured finger and isn’t expected to return until the New Orleans game.
Scharping started at right guard against the Cowboys before moving to right tackle. He struggled for the first time in preseason against the Cowboys’ defensive front that’s a lot better than what he saw against Green Bay and Detroit.
O’Brien started Julién Davenport at left tackle against the Cowboys rather than Roderick Johnson, who played so well against Detroit.
Davenport started at left tackle last season, but he has fallen behind Matt Kalil (injured) and Johnson. O’Brien probably wanted to get another look at Davenport, who could be in danger of not making the 53-man roster if a new left tackle is acquired for Clowney and Johnson is kept as the swing tackle.
Six days remain until the roster is reduced to 53. Lots of questions need to be answered. Will Clowney be part of the roster, or will he have a new zip code? And if he is sent packing by O’Brien, will Watson be the biggest beneficiary?
Those questions should be answered soon. Real soon”

Alright, time to unpack the notebook from a great 2-day visit at the Vikings’ superb new training facility.

First off, let’s be clear — the Vikings are definitely putting all their eggs in the “We’re Gonna Make Damn Sure Kirk Cousins Will Be Better This Year, Damn it” basket

GM Rick Spielman and HC Mike Zimmer decided to maximize their $84 million investment by building the offense around what Cousins does best — playaction and boots, hence the hire of playaction guru Gary Kubiak as an offensive assistant

Kevin Stefanski is the OC, but Spielman told me the 37-year old has been on the Kubiak bandwagon from the start, which is impressive since others might have seen it as a threat. “I think that’s what makes Kevin unique — for a young, upcoming guy to want that experience,” he said

Kubiak, to his credit, is going out of his way to make it known that Stefanski is in charge. But Stefanski sees it as a partnership, since their preferred schemes are similar and the verbiage is, too. The trick is melding it all together to maximize Cousins

Cousins believes “clutch” is a real thing & he has to be better. “I think that’s an important piece of playing the position, absolutely,” he said. “I think that’s an area where I think I can be better in or do more in, and I think that’s something I’m excited to do this year.”

Cousins is in good shape, right around 200 pounds, and feeling great in part due to tennis, which he played for an hour 3 times a week with a local pro this offseason. “I’ll probably try that again next offseason because that was a fun way to switch it up,” he told me

The bootlegs in the new off. system lend themselves to QB scrambles & defensive teammates are now noticing a nimbleness in No. 8. “He’s a sneaky athlete — he can get outside the pocket and he can get first downs on the run when you don’t expect it,” MLB Eric Kendricks told me

I asked Spielman if thinks there will be another fully-guaranteed deal after Cousins. “That was such a unique situation; when does a guy like that get on the open market at that age? Never happens, so basically you’re just jumping in the bidding war because it’s a rarity.”

The Vikings are absolutely over the moon with their 1st-round pick, C Garrett Bradbury. “I think he’ll be a great player in this league,” one teammate said. He'll be the centerpiece of a revamped OL that is athletic & adept at the zone-running concepts Stefanski & Kubiak lean on

Seriously, the Vikings talk about Bradbury with an optimism approaching, but not quite equal to, the Colts & Quenton Nelson last year. Bradbury is their OL prototype & he’s picked up the playbook quickly. “He didn’t have a choice — we shoved it at him day one,” Kubiak told me

Also keep an eye on RT Brian O’Neill, who the Vikings are really excited about. A former tight end, the 6-foot-7, 297-pounder — who is entering his second season — is athletic and starting to grow into his body. He’s physically maturing, and hopes are high he’ll be better in '19

One player who stands to benefit from the improved OL & one-cut zone game is RB Dalvin Cook, who was healthy this offseason for the first time in 2 years & could be primed for a huge '19. “Dalvin Cook’s made for any scheme,” Stefanski told me. “I really think he’s that talented.”

But wait! We’re not done. Keep an eye on rookie Alex Mattison, who is impressing as a change-of-pace back, while there was lots of buzz about 2nd-round TE Irv Smith Jr., who play a lot with Kyle Rudolph. Cousins loves his TEs and the skills of “Rudy” and Irv are complementary

Defensively, one player that is ascending is CB Mackensie Alexander. Things started to click for him the last three or four games of last season, when the Vikings internally noted that he was playing like their best DB. He’s matured and made big gains entering year three

The Vikings surrendered a 5th for K Kaare Vedvik, so they obviously think a lot of him. He can handle FGs, punts or kickoffs and the Vikings think he’s unique but must figure out his role. It would be hugely valuable if he could one day handle all those things; I'm just saying

Lastly, Minn. is already $12m over the cap for '20, but Spielman thinks it’s worth it to give this group a shot at the SB. “If your goal going into training camp is not to win the damn thing, then why are you in the business to begin with? We shove it to the table every year.”

R.I. man recalls days in the NFL (2000)

“Mr. Franck's best season was in 1946, when he averaged 6.3 yards per carry and amassed well over 600 yards in a 10-game season.
``That year we had a guy, Joe Byler, a linemen, he was probably 6-foot-7 and weighed 350 pounds,'' Mr. Franck said, a smile creeping across his face. ``He was huge, and I would put glue on my hands and just stick behind him. Something went on between him and this other guy off the field, and on one play, I pointed this other guy out and Joe hit him so hard the guy flipped backwards. Joe only played one year. Watch this play again, and focus on Jones during his drop from the shotgun alignment. Before he hits his drop depth he has come off the out pattern and brought his eyes to the drive concept in the middle of the field. That is a very quick read and decision, but it is the right one from the young quarterback. From the end zone angle, you can see how he works the next two reads in the progression, looking first at Ellison before he comes underneath to Shepard:

The best thing about Daniel Jones hot start to the preseason is the Giants have barely teased his skill set. On the first play vs CIN they used him on a bootleg for the first time. Still hasn’t kept a zone read. Throwing accurately while on the move was one his two best traits

Dan Schneier (@DanSchneierNFL)

Poise in the pocket and the ability to maintain accuracy while throwing through a hit. At Duke, he showed over and over, a willingness to stand in the pocket for that extra half second to deliver a throw despite the pressure coming down at him

This is why everyone needs to pump the brakes on Daniel Jones and be OK with him having ups and downs like EVERY other QB (but baker) as a rookie when he finally gets his chance. Hopefully sooner, rather than later. And yes, I still love what I’ve seen so far

As I said on draft night, at least one Saints personnel executive graded Jones as the best QB in the entire draft. I'm sure he, along with Dave Gettleman, isn't surprised at how Jones is performing....

This is getting lost in the cries of "Peppers/NYG can't cover a TE"

Known:
1) it was NOT Man Coverage
2) As Peppers sinks to LOS he raises left arm, Ballentine raises right arm
3) its a 2x2 condensed set & the receivers to the boundary SWITCH release

Nick Turchyn (@Tmanic21)
8/23/19, 11:12 PM
What "help" Could Shurmur Mean?

Deep 3rd Zone Eyes from the Boun CB (probably as a RULE to the Switch)

What does "little tighter" mean?

Peppers has assignments in both the run game and Match Coverage(not easy vs Switch). Needs to get to near hip to cut off the vertical

No coverage is perfect. This is an example where miscommunication/tough assignment ran into a very good call in the preseason. You might see more of these Switch releases or Rubs (like in the Jets 1st drive TD) in the RZ where NYG has not shown Banjo-like checks

Wrote about Flowers after the first preseason game. He was aggressively attacking the outside shoulder of 3T's with his outside hand, left him hugely vulnerable inside. Exactly what happened here, leading to immediate pressure on Keenum

On that 3rd down, watch the communication between Flowers and Penn at LG/LT. Keenum appears to slide the line right. Flowers points inside and it appears the Penn signals he has the inside guy. Flowers slides right, leaving the rusher free, who ends up hitting Keenum
