But that was such a snide uncalled for comment by Doug Gottlieb.

Its so easy to say these things when its not them in constant pain and discomfort from the litany of injuries

Personally agree with Aikman. That said, fans in and out of BBI are brutal with player injuries..See Nicks, Hakeem for one of countless examples

However this feels like another millennial "Free speech means I can say what I want but you can't" episode. Troy has the right to his opinion, but so does Gottlieb. I don't see how you can condemn one for being a jerk and say the other is right as a fact. This is all opinion and point of view.

This is freedom of speech exemplified.

Gottlieb, a 43 year old man most famous for committing credit card fraud, was free to say whatever he want and the government did not intervene.

Troy Aikman, a 52 year old man and famous for playing the position Andrew Luck just retired from (and notably not a Millennial), was free to respond and tell Gottlieb his opinion (also without intervention).

Of course its all opinion. Outside of "Andrew Luck retired", everything is pretty much opinion. Freedom of speech means you can say whatever you want without getting arrested/censored/sued by the gov't, not that there isn't going to be repercussions and a lot of people to call you an idiot if you use a wide-reading medium like Twitter to spout your stupidity.

Unless you're asking for safe spaces for middle-aged Diet Skip Baylesses to continue to get this level of attention without blow back and preventing that freedom of speech, I don't get the complaint.
C’mon guys

Why do you consider “millennials” derogatory? I took it as saying generational values differ. Lombardi’s winning is the ONLY thing is not gospel to younger generations.

Jesus, I'm the biggest proponent of free speech I know but this is some weird application of it. Doug Gottlieb can say whatever he wants doesn't mean he can't be calles out on it. Weird way to infuse politics into the situation.

Sounds like another "I'm goinf to pretend to understand what free speech means" post.

What does this situation have to do with the 1st Amendment? Has anybody said that Gottlieb can't say what he wants? Has he been incarcerate for saying what he said? They are simply saying that he is a prick.

The 1st Amendment does not protect you from being called a prick for making ridiculous statements.

By the lack of players, ex-players, and teammates criticizing the move -- I think it's safe to say the fraternity of NFL players understand.

I bet a significant number only continue to play for the money, and not the whimsical dedication to team or love for the game fans want it to be about.

I wonder if you privately polled current players and asked them if they'd retire with Andrew Luck's bank account, how many would. I guess it would be close to half.

I don't understand, they are both saying what they want. We (most on this thread and in the general public from what I can tell) think Gottlieb should know his place in the sports world and probably shouldn't judge a player who's suffered multiple football related injuries, most or all of which Doug wouldn't know anything about rehabbing from.

It was a chickenshit comment that he is indeed free to say. The reactions are free speech as well, and he deserves all of them.

when Willis retired I thought that was the tip of the iceberg. These guys make a great living (the top guys that is) and 1 contract is generally enough on the risk/reward spectrum (from what I can tell, just my opinion). If they aren't going to let these guys medicate with THC, aren't going to give 2 bye weeks, and aren't going to expand rosters, then I don't blame a single one of them for getting theirs and calling it quits so they can enjoy the rest of their lives with their families.

Why a scumbag like Gottlieb feels the need to make an issue if it is just one more example of media creating a story to get attention, this one backfired and might have consequences.

By the way, am I the only one that feels it’s better than 50/50 Luck will be back next season?

I’m not sure it’s better than 50/50 but I think it’s probably 33%ish.

Apparently he’s a football addict. So as he starts to feet better there is likely going to be a natural gravitational pull to come back. And his wife is expecting their first child. So dealing with a newborn, and a lot of sleepless nights, may lure him back as well... ; )

I do hope he reconsiders. Since his Stanford days, I’ve really enjoyed watching him play. Guy was a athletic linebacker type playing great football as a QB...

Don't think 50/50 is right. But he's young enough where I could see down the line he might want to jump back in the league and see what he can do after he's had time to heal and if there is a good OL in place wherever he goes.

I think the more relevant point (and the one you may have been trying to make) is.... "Who really cares?"

An F-List Shock Jock Sports personality goes on Twitter and checks the right boxes to get the masses up in arms, and the masses react in accordance.

I think we are in a weird spot where everyone has a megaphone attached to their smart device, but not everyone is smart enough to use it appropriately.

Conversely, we have a large group of people who are just waiting to find something to get mad about and use that same platform to tilt windmills.

The unique wrinkle here is the take was so stupid that a former NFL player and prominent personality for the NFL on Fox chimed in and put the initiator in his place.

The answer is not to ban people from expressing themselves, but to just hope that people can step back and be rational. It likely isn't going to happen, but that's the hope.
The real..

answer is to expect professionalism from people who get paid to purportedly report on sports.

i didn't defend what he said. read what i wrote above. but having a hot take about gottlieb's character is no better than having a hot take about Luck's reasons for retiring. Gottlieb is in a tough business and he tweeted something dumb for attention. he said something incredibly stupid and he's getting blasted for it. I'm sure/hope he's a good husband/father/etc, but none of that has anything to do with what we are pointing out.

If you are going to be in the "hot take" business then don't get mad when you lose. Gottlieb lost this one, and hopefully he learns from it and gets better at his job because of it.

Simple as that.
Gottlieb..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/26/2019 11:27 am : link
is only in a tough business because he's fighting with other people to deliver the most outrageous takes possible.

To survive, he needs attention. Since he can't get it by being a solid analyst exhibiting professionalism, he gets it by taking a contrarian position regarding a star player's retirement, cemented by trashing that player.

He's done this for years. Look at some of the petty things he's said about the Syracuse basketball team (many of whom think stems from him not being recruited by Boeheim)
