The upcoming Dallas game.

BlueLou'sBack : 9/5/2019 2:54 pm
Frankly I think this opener will set the stage or tone for the entire season.

Maybe not so much if it's a win or a loss, but if the team gets its ass kicked, and most especially if the Dallas OL sets the tone and they run ragged over our defensive front 7, I will expect a pretty sorry ass year overall.

Don't trust our LBs for shit.
Parcells always said it takes around 4 games ir so

win to start the year would be pretty great. That being said, it's going to be tough. They have a way of grinding out those 7-8 minute drives where Elliott get his 5 and 6 yard carries and Dak rolls out for 10 yards every other throw. If we can get a fucking stop on 3rd down EARLY in this game, we've got a chance.

...Giants had their asses handed to them in weeks 1 and 2. Gave up EIGHTY points.

So - I'm not hanging my hat on whatever terrible things will probably occur.

I am more concerned by the front 7 than anything else. Change to a 3-4 without a single impact linebacker?? GAAH!!!

Trying to remember the last time a Giant front 7 looked this weak on paper and I'm having trouble. I fear it could get really ugly - like a bottom-5 defense.

Need the new system to WORK, need a couple of these kids to become instant All Pro's. Lawrence and Carter, I'm looking at YOU.

I'll throw up if I see

Somehow, however unlikely, that the ball bounces the Giants way and they escape with a W. That's it. We've lost the season opener how many times in a row? In fact when was the last time we won one? Once since 2011 or something?
Have to have some fight
LIbud : 9/5/2019 4:10 pm : link
The 1st quarter and a half will dictate. A stop by the D early or holding them to field goals would be great, keep them to 13 points or under in the first half. We'll get a look at our D here and see what fight they have, especially up front against that line. Hoping scheme is solid against all their talent.

Can we get and keep decent/good field position, control the ball, some first downs and get some points up? Most think we'll be ok but that's the piece i worry about.

I don't trust our D, especially in a shoot out, think we'd lose late if it comes to that. But we have to score early and stay close early. If we get down 10 in the late 3rd, this one is probably done.
Perhaps one tactic is to skew our running plays...
M.S. : 9/5/2019 4:11 pm : link

...between the tackles. I think going wide against this LBer group is a tough nut to crack. They flow to the ball really well. Rather go straight at them.

Just a thought.

On defense, sure I'd love a decent pass rush, but I would gladly sacrifice it if our front seven concentrated on stopping their run game and pitched a shutout!

This, and he said that back when they played 6 preseason games. Even more true now.

If the Dallas Oline renders our front 7 useless, I'd turn up the heat. Bettcher could use a variety of blitzes, mae Dak throw early and let our secondary get some exerc
Wow -did that get

butchered.

If front 7 gets beat by the Dallas online then blitz like crazy.
Hurry Dak's throws and let our secondary have some fun.
Just win the game
Reale01 : 9/5/2019 4:49 pm : link
No moral victories. That attitude is BS.

Go into Dallas and win. A 42-0 loss and a 24-23 loss are the same in the standings.

Win or lose you build on the experience and prepare to win the next game.

I am sick of 0-1 because we open at Dallas - usually in prime time. Let's be 1-0.

Completely, check out the first two games of the 2007 season, then watch the Super Bowl, then tell me if you changed your mind, lets remember we stunk it up by the end of the 2006 season and Tiki retired, Strahan held out all camp and there were very few optimistic opinions of that team. We trailed by 2 td's at the half in Washington in game 3. So don't bs yourself knowing the happy ending.
The Giants go 23-0

Pre-season 4-0 (Completed)
Regular Season 16-0 (Starts with a win Sunday)
Playoffs 3-0

We do have a tootsie pop center defense and Dallas continually exploits the center of the field each match up.

The game that changed that season was Bradshaw running for that 60-70 yard TD in Buffalo and close NE loss. Otherwise scratching and clawing that schedule.
Knowing that was then and this is now
micky : 9/5/2019 6:20 pm : link
And 1 game can't be an indicator. Remember 07'? First 3 games 0-2 going into washington on verge of going 0-3 to start season. 1 defensive stand changed everything.

But that just an ie first game really doesn't set tone
I don't think one game agaisnt a good team bringing back 22 starters
Zeke's Alibi : 9/5/2019 6:32 pm : link
says all that much. Shit I could see us losing by 17 points and winning the next two weeks. I actually kind of expect taht to happen although that Tampa game is going to be tough in the heat.
Has the starting defensive unit given anyone confidence that

Not to me. They're just too young at this point.

Comparing those teams to this one seems ridiculous. There's no Strahan here. There's no Osi. Those teams had established high end players. And at least one hall of fame level player.
Ten Ton ....that team was 30/1 to win the Superbowl, this one is 80/1
Zeke's Alibi : 9/5/2019 7:24 pm : link
the differences should be obvious and the only reason that team had longer odds than 15-1 or so was because of tiki's retirement.

Best hope is to "Dallas" Dallas. Dominate TOP with a run game and short passes, and keep our Achilles heel D off the field as long as possible.

Dallas has become very effective at that. Granted, that is much easier said than done. But with a better OL and a year under Barkley's belt, it doesn't seem too far fetched...
Giants are coming along and headed
Simms11 : 9/5/2019 8:41 pm : link
in the right direction. The foundation looks pretty strong, but this game just doesn’t look like a win. Dallas is just too strong along both lines and at home, first game of the year, it’s going to be tough sledding. We’ve got some work to do to develop some chemistry too. I think the only way we win is to steal one. We’re going to have to keep it close and win with a last minute FG IMO.
Dallas is good in the areas
Dave on the UWS : 9/5/2019 8:46 pm : link
that will tell how much progress Gettleman’s made. Their OL, and front 7 are very good. They will test OUR OL and front 7. Barkley is capable of winning a close game by himself so that’s the hope. They are favored by a touchdown and on paper, deservedly so.

I was going to give the same answer in general - there is no comparison between that 07 defense with Strahan, Osi, Tuck, Kiwi, ROBBINS (very underrated by almost everyone), Cofield and Antonio Pierce directing traffic, and the current crew most of whom still have baby teeth, and the experienced among them (Bethea) likely on his last leg...

Now the OLs of the two teams might be comparable, if this one gels quickly.
This is a game where the difference to nab a Giant W
BlueLou'sBack : 9/5/2019 9:45 pm : link
should be Eli vs Dak...

And if that doesn't bear out, it points towards the necessity to accelerate the turnover to DJ.
Well it's setting up for an easy Cowboy win .
Bluesbreaker : 9/5/2019 11:26 pm : link
The one threat we had at WR is suspended
They are fast at WR and on defense with one of the
best LB corp in football will be tough sledding for Barkley
and the TE butchered us last season he looked better
then Witten in his prime lol
That said an upset would set BSPN on its head especially
if Eli leads the game winner .
I hope 24

Has over 200 yards from scrimmage, we win the Cowboys fans realize they overpaid Zeke. Not the best RB in the league.

Who is 24? Did Shurmur hybrdize Barkley and Gallman? Or is Julian Love playing on offense?

You can believe, as I do, that the Giants will lose this game.

You can also believe, as Joey declared in a recent post, that it will be a really ugly loss.

But if you believe this one game will set the tone for the entire season, you're not only being overly pessimistic, but overly dramatic as well.

Again. Even just for a week. A opening day win on the road against a division foe would be perfect. Shurmur better bring his A game.
