Packers FA offseason moves

AnskyJK : 9/5/2019 11:46 pm
Itís one game so donít want to get carried away but the Packers 3 big FA defensive acquisitions were major forces tonight- Adrian Amos, Preston smith and ZaíDarius Smith. Knowing they run a similar 3-4 to Betchers scheme it makes me envious they were able to get 3 difference makers
The Bears offense looked way worse than the Packers D looked good.
Zeke's Alibi : 9/6/2019 12:12 am : link
Not sure what you can take from that game.
Said it on the game thread
AcesUp : 9/6/2019 12:17 am : link
But I think they're legit. Beyond the obvious in the FA additions, they upgraded at DC (Pettine) and may be experiencing some serious progression in the secondary. Their starting corners last year were first year players (rookie Jaire Alexander and 2nd year Kevin King coming off IR). They also signed the top FA safety in Amos and drafted Darnell Savage in the first. Savage is getting a lot of hype for a great camp and a guy that can potentially be an elite, he looked good tonight too.
Like I said in another post,

the Packers have been slowly improving their defense. Those off-season moves have improved that unit. Good for them.
I really wanted
Breeze_94 : 9/6/2019 2:36 am : link
Za'Darius Smith, but that price tag was steep. Not sure he'll live up to it.
Also
Breeze_94 : 9/6/2019 2:38 am : link
Rashan Gary off to a pretty rough start.

Not to toot my own horn, but I saw this coming. He was invisible at Michigan. All hype. Can't turn the corner and a bit of a tweener.
Bears kept MT on a leash most of the game

Trubisky

is not progressing. If he doesn't the Bears are going to waste a superbowl calibre D.

how do you NOT play him at all in the preseason, big mistake he looked pretty bad.
This is what you get when you don't play ANY Offensive Starters
ZogZerg : 9/6/2019 6:52 am : link
in the Pre-season.

This game was dog shit. Both Packers and Bears O looked like garbage. They were both out of sync, trying to get use to tackle football.

You can not take too much away for either D.

You can talk all you want how he isnít progressing and that may be true BUT I urge you to find a weaker group of skill players in the nfl. That team is all defense and zero offense. You couldnít even name me his WR without looking it up.

arcarsenal : 9/6/2019 7:46 am : link
Matt Nagy got greedy and thought he could just sit his starters the entire season. Well, guess what? Now his offense is going to need to treat the first month of the season like preseason and it's going to take about that long for them to get it together.

Not getting Trubisky any preseason reps was just mind boggling. This is a 3rd year QB who hasn't even played 2 full seasons and clearly needs the work. They called that game last night like they were petrified he'd lose it for them.

I think the GB D is going to be much improved this year, but be careful about what you take away from one game. Particularly Week 1 against an offense that likely looked completely dysfunctional for the reason(s) stated above.
Allen Robinson
armstead98 : 9/6/2019 7:48 am : link
Tarik Cohen

Are two of the best weapons in the game. Trey Burton is a top 7 tight end.

Don't think you blame their offense on lack of weapons

I could quite easily, actually... Allen Robinson and Anthony Miller are the starters and Robinson isn't a bad player. He had a very good game actually considering how bad Trubisky was.

He also has a pretty nice stable of RB's. Cohen is sort of a jack of all trades, they're apparently very high on Montgomery despite head-scratchingly giving him just 6 carries, and Mike Davis will be a solid change of pace pass catcher.

The group isn't great and absolutely is below average. But some of these guys are decent-good... Cohen had a really good year last year and Robinson can play.
GB secondary
beatrixkiddo : 9/6/2019 7:59 am : link
Is pretty underrated. They have a ton of talent there now, great CBís and Savage looks like he is going to be an elite player soon.
Da Bears
ChicagoMarty : 9/6/2019 8:10 am : link
OL had a number of penalties last night. They are the guys that needed some pre-season action to get in sync.
arc, agree
ColHowPepper : 9/6/2019 8:34 am : link
Montgomery looked very good (and the booth was not reticent about pointing this out), but hardly saw the ball after his first bunch of carries. It was as if, when Bears fell behind in Q2 when Rodgers caught fire for a brief stint, Nagy went to a different playbook: "playcalling for when I'm behind". That didn't work so well, until they got aggressive late in 4th, just before the pic
Trubisky looked lost.
johnnyb : 9/6/2019 8:35 am : link
On one play he rolled left and had a wide open receiver ten yards RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM. Trubisky kept his head down and ran out of bounds. For a third year QB I would think he was past this. Plenty of other examples of inaccuracy and poor decision making- one bad decision was trying to force a pass into triple coverage. I was never a big fan of Trubisky and his performance last night did little to change my mind.
They were impressive
ShockNRoll : 9/6/2019 9:06 am : link
I'm hoping Ximines, Golden, Pierre, Lawrence, Baker, Connelly, etc. have a similar impact on the Giants defense. I also continue to marvel at how good the Bears LB's are, and the impact they have on the game. If Trubisky can play even marginally better than he did last night (and last night he was downright awful), they can win the NFC with this defense.
Meh
Johnny5 : 9/6/2019 9:29 am : link
First game is preseason Game 5... lol. You get an idea what they will look like but they are just getting used to hitting and starters playing full games.

Both defenses looked good, and both offenses looked out of sync. I think by game 5 you'll have a better idea of what every team is. That said, GB has to be very happy to steal a win there, and conversely that is a tough loss for the Bears at home.

what conclusions can be drawn about the GB D.

The Bears basically ran an offense that relied on dumpoffs to the backs most of the night. When Trubisky threw downfield, he had some really poor throws.

One pass was floated and off target and dropped for an INT

One pass was intercepted that was thrown across his body and without any velocity.

He missed on two throws that would've put them in the red zone

He threw the final INT that was both a poor pass and a poor read.
Trubiski looked like Davis Webb last night
Jim in Forest Hills : 9/6/2019 10:59 am : link
Seriously, I think that would be what it would look like if Webb were starting. Staring down receivers, throwing way late after the wr breaks leading to contested catches. Just an ugly, ugly start. Nagy rightfully should get some heat for that start. Loss to a division rival with 3 points no less.
trubisky sucks and Nagy called a terrible game
Platos : 9/6/2019 11:00 am : link
"check down eli" would've won that game because he'd of seen his wide open RB every play. Trubisky eye fucked his 1st read, didn't even move his head.

you're down only a score and pass the ball a million times?

they ran the ball like 15 times all game and they have 3 backs who can run. the guy blew it.

I was embarrassed for and by the NFL watching such shoddy QB play.

I am accustomed to the refine efficiency of a young Daniel Stephen Jones III.

A gratuitous Webb shot. Well played, bbi approved.

Um...what? None of what you said is true. Robinson is a pretty good WR, but definitely not one of the best weapons in the game. Cohen is fast, he's versatile, but he's small and isn't much of a threat between the tackles running the ball.

And Burton? He's good...but come on. Top 7? Kelce, Ertz, Engram, Kittle, Engram, Cook, O.J. Howard, Eric Ebron, Jimmy Graham (still), Austin Hooper... are all better than him. That's 10 guys right there off the top of my head. And very likely that Hunter Henry, Hockenson (yes, even before he's played a game), I'd put Kyle Rudolph ahead of him, David Njoku...Burton is an average starting NFL TE at best. He started all last year and I think based on that, "average" is fairly generous.

Their best two weapons are probably Anthony Miller, who wasn't part of the game plan after missing too many practices because of injury, and Montgomery, the rookie.

Allen Robinson is very good. Cohen is explosive and video game shifty. He has some weapons. He's just no Eli Manning :)
It's one game
Torrag : 9/6/2019 2:26 pm : link
Trubisky looked mediocre but the playcalling didn't help him. Too pass oriented for a team with a good OL and 3 good RB's. They need to run the ball.
In 2018 Nagy rested most of his starters in preseason as well.
Brown Recluse : 9/6/2019 2:38 pm : link
They also lost the first game of the regular season to the Packers.

Its just the first game. A lot of teams that look like crap right now will pick it up later on, and a lot of teams that look good right now will look like crap later on.

arcarsenal : 9/6/2019 2:44 pm : link
Their offensive game plan last night just didn't make a whole lot of sense. They couldn't tell people enough how much they loved David Montgomery and then proceeded to give him 6 carries.

There were a bunch of goofy RPO attempts that went nowhere when Trubisky pulled the ball down, and they basically played the game from drive 1 like they were just hoping the defense could win them the game while they played to "not lose" on offense.

It almost worked... but even still, the execution was horrendous and ugly. Trubisky doesn't look like a guy who should have been protected all preseason... he needs work and a lot of it.
I'm..
FatMan in Charlotte : 9/6/2019 3:29 pm : link
pretty sure video game shifty doesn't translate into the same in real life.
Rashan Gary
jacob12 : 9/6/2019 5:14 pm : link
The post about Rashan is blatantly unfair. He has played one game. I don't think he is a tweener, Gary has the ability to play 3 positions well. Rashan explodes off the ball, and he has power, speed, and a great closing burst. Gary is one of the most athletic large college DL I have ever seen.

Rashan, a 277-pound edge rusher, ran the fastest 40-yard dash time (4.58), by a player 275 pounds or larger, at the NFL Combine. He is a genetic freak.

Gary is not a polished DL. He disappeared at times in college. Rashan needs more rush moves, and he doesn't use his hands well. The Packers think Gary has a high ceiling, and they hope his talent comes to fruition.

Rashan Gary is one of the best athletes in the NFL.

What ďgameĒ is that. Heís not a total miss but heís never impressed m. Both offenses looked like shit. Rodgers at least is Rodgers. Trubisky May become Andy Dalton if they are lucky at rid rate
It seems to me..
FatMan in Charlotte : 9/6/2019 6:08 pm : link
when I watch him play that Trubisky keeps himself on a leash. He's never been particularly good at reading defenses and he's used his athleticism to get where he has.

I'm not sure the Bears want him to let loose. He's never been a guy who sits in the pocket and makes great downfield throws. He'd rather use outlets and run the ball.
