Rookies on Defense

armstead98 : 9/6/2019 9:11 am
I think we all agree that the defense is the big question mark heading into the season and it's largely because of how many rookies we have who are expected to play a big role early.

I thought I'd just list out all the rookies we need to step up:

1. Lawrence - It all starts with the big man up front. He's the one I'm most confident in right away.

2. Baker - He missed some important preseason work but will be counted on early. He'll probably have his fair share of rookie challenges this year.

3. Ximines - Probably a pass rush specialist early. Look to him for a spark off the bench.

4. Connelly - I doubt I'm alone when I say I expect him to take a starting role in the middle sooner or later.

5. Ballentine - He's earned the snaps he's going to get. Let's see if he can keep it up.

I expect all of these players to start at some point this year. It's a lot to ask of a young group, but I'm excited to see how they do and watch them grow.
I think the offense is a big question mark too

Can Eli still win games? Can Engram stay healthy? Can our OL get it done? Especially the OTs. Can two slot receivers co-exist? Do we have any outside WR that poses a threat to defenses?
I just posted on another thread about this

and it is a tall order to expect these guys to play at a high level right away, but I do think there should be optimism on the potential this group has to get better throughout the year and into next year. Here's hoping that maybe one or two of these guys have a Gibril Wilson type rookie year.
We may need to be patient with rookie mistakes that cost games

early on. These young players are the future of our defense and, IMO, the future looks bright.
I think Ximines will contribute more

as the season progresses. I don't expect him to see much time on defense early on unless injuries hit the position.

It will be fun watching these youngsters get a taste of real NFL football this Sunday. They're geared up for sure and chomping at the bit. By the end of the game, they'll be a rag tag bunch of guys that understand a whole lot more of what is expected of them. Some will shine, some will suck. It's all part of the learning process.

of Julian Love was 'one of the best value grabs by any team in the 2019 draft'. Right now it looks that can be said of Corey Ballentine.
The big question mark

is the big fella.

After the preseason games I am less confident he will step in and dominate as a rookie vs teams like Dallas and Philly with very solid or even excellent OLs.

If he can be dominant against them, we have a shot at the playoffs.
I expect growing pains and improvement from the defense

I expect some rough play from the right side of the OL early on as well. They may be vets but they've played minimal snaps together and it takes time to develop that synergy.

The schedule is manageable though. The Dallas game is going to be difficult but the next three contests are all winnable games. If Shurmur can navigate a course to 3-1 start then notion of contending for a playoff berth gains some traction.
Fairly confident

DG laced this team with high floor rookies. Unlike Reese's drama crater "high ceiling" guys.

I'm not sure we want to see a lot of Julian Love yet
Since I'm not expecting the Giants to win in Dallas...

For me, this game and its aftermath will be a good test of the character of this team, and the ability of its head coach and its leaders to keep them positive and focused.

Agree with you about Lawrence.

If they can stop the run they will compete with both Philly and Dallas this year. I am confident that on the offense side the Giants will have very strong interior OL play and thus the offense will be strong.

Hate to put that pressure on Lawrence but he needs to become a leader of the D.....and fast. I believe he will.
Ximines...

...I'm hoping for a Vinnie Johnson-like season.
