The Mayo acquisition makes more sense now.
Big Blue Blogger : 9/6/2019 11:43 am : link
He was always likely to replace Stupar, not Goodson.

Coach McGaughey got his guy. Here’s hoping he and Gettleman remember Mayo accurately, not through rose-tinted Carolina glasses.

It's not like he has big shoes to fill...
Mayo is five years younger than Stupar.
Klaatu : 9/6/2019 11:44 am : link
So he's got that going for him...which is nice.
Mayo
DavidinBMNY : 9/6/2019 11:47 am : link
Is probably dressing this Sunday and playing a key specials role.
I'm guessing Slayton
Andy in Boston : 9/6/2019 11:52 am : link
gets called up.
Gives them more of a rotation to keep the DL fresh against that Oline and running game.

adds $225K to our big dead money pool and saves $510K against this years cap. Of course, he has to be replaced with someone else's salary. (OTC)
$135K of that provisional dead money (the salary guarantee part) might get offset if he manages to catch on with another team for a few weeks during the season.

For now, if Stupar's roster spot goes to a rookie like Slayton, there will be a small net savings. If the replacement is a young vet like Elder, or another vested vet on a qualifying minimum deal, there will be a small cap hit because of Stupar's salary guarantee (assuming he doesn't catch on elsewhere later in the year).

Either way, these are not numbers that have much impact, even for a team that is up against the cap. The Giants can easily free a bit of space if they need to. Also, keep in mind that the Giants probably didn't pay Mayo any bonus at all; the 49ers guaranteed him $1.15MM, although they will probably wiggle out of about two-thirds of that commitments because of offsets from his NYG salary, which will become guaranteed tomorrow.

I’d started a thread on ‘surprise cuts’ - I said they’d keep Taufeua (so) over Goodson and Stupar. And it came true, even if Taufeua is on the PS.

Well, no. They kept Davis and Connelly - and acquired Mayo - over Goodson and Stupar. The Giants "kept" Tauaefa like Dorian "hit" Alabama. ;o)
I would guess Chris Slayton (DT) is added to the 53 just based

That there are no plans to fill the vacancy this week, which leads me to believe they have a veteran that they wanna bring in for a workout after Monday. If they sign a vet after the cowboy game the salary is not guaranteed.

George: Are you referring to Mayo, or the subsequent addition that takes Stupar's roster spot? Neither is likely to be a big deal. Mayo will be paid for the full year, but will probably qualify for the minimum salary benefit - in which case the only possible cap impact of swapping those LBs is Stupar's small salary guarantee. The newer new guy could be anyone, and his salary could be anything from $495K to, well, whatever.
BBB
George from PA : 9/6/2019 1:10 pm : link
I meant, it is a big deal for the player.

As they will get a NFL salary for the year.

Did not mean...cap related.
FWIW, if they wait until Monday...
Big Blue Blogger : 9/6/2019 1:11 pm : link
... and sign a vested veteran to a qualifying minimum contract for the remaining sixteen weeks, the cap hit for his salary will be about $607K. That's 16/17ths of the minimum salary for a player with two years of credited tenure.

Hold my beer. A week ago, after the 49ers released Mayo, I predicted that the Giants would sign him and that he would replace Stupar.
If the Jint offensive gameplan
ChicagoMarty : 9/6/2019 1:51 pm : link
is emphasizing the TE and one of the three TEs on the roster - Garrett Dickerson is dinged - then Conrad would be the likely choice to elevate from the practice squad.

If the idea is to sign an experienced pass covering lb to replace Stupar then Brandon Marshall may still be available...

There are four TE's on the roster. Ellison, Engram, Dickerson, and the new guy, the ex-Jet.

Many peope have been speculating
pjcas18 : 9/6/2019 3:07 pm : link
a veteran signing on Monday.

But I don't see that being realistic for any of the "names" out there since the Giants have no cap room unless that signing comes with another move like a veteran cut (not league min) or a restructure.
Who Did He Piss Off?
Samiam : 9/6/2019 3:18 pm : link
Cutting a veteran right after the cutdown to 53 players? Stupar was not brought here to play LB except if someone got hurt. No one should be surprised he was not good. What he did well, and he did it very well was special teams. People have short memories. How long ago was it that the Giants lost multiple games because the special teams sucked?
There are currently two TEs on the current roster
ChicagoMarty : 9/6/2019 3:36 pm : link
who are healthy and know the plays.

Conrad would make a third.

Jints are allegedly going to emphasize TEs in their game-planning hence it would behoove them to actually have TEs who are healthy and know the plays in order to implement said game plan.

Are you not counting Engram as a TE? Or are you suggesting some of these guys don't know the plays or are injured?

Because as far as I know, the Giants currently have 4 TE's on the 53-man roster Engram, Ellison, Dickerson and Tomlinson. Conrad would make a 5th.

Dickerson is hurt and has not practiced
ChicagoMarty : 9/6/2019 4:47 pm : link
the new guy doesn't know the plays, the protections, the calls etc.

So we have Engram and Ellison who actually can carry out a TE centric game plan as of today.

Conrad would be a third TE who knows the plays and is healthy.

So what is it that makes you like Mayo so much?
ChicagoMarty: I think Tomlinson will dress, and have a narrow role.
Big Blue Blogger : 9/6/2019 4:48 pm : link
With Stupar gone and Jones active, the inactives for Sunday seem pretty well set:
WR (1) Slayton (injury)
TE (1) Dickerson (injury)
OL (2) Choose from Gates/Slade/Smith
QB (1) Tanney
DB (1) Love
NA (1) Empty roster spot

Actives would be 22 Defense, 21 Offense, 3 Special Teams. Might be more accurate to say 21, 19, and 6, because Core, Mayo and Russell Shepard are basically dressing to play specials.

Paul Perkins is also a possibility, if they want to dress eight OL or have Love available. The extra offensive lineman becomes more plausible if Remmers is iffier than he and the staff are letting on.

Nothing, TBH. Just a lucky guess, based on the Carolina/GM/coaching connection, and the fact that any solid LB/STer would be an upgrade over what Stupar appeared to have left in the tank.

It would be interesting to know whether the Giants pursued Mayo in the offseason but simply got outbid by San Francisco. At the time, maybe they thought Stupar was better. In any case, he was cheaper.

Does anyone have an answer to this question? What's the reason for putting Stupar on the 53-man roster, but then cutting him at this point without a free agent addition?
Week 1 vested vet guarantee
Sneakers O'toole : 9/6/2019 6:55 pm : link
They cut him before sunday most likely to avoid that, and may holding off on officially signing whoever it is that they have in mind for that spot until next week for the same reason.

Vested vets on the roster for game one have guaranteed base salary for the year.
If that was the main factor
eclipz928 : 9/6/2019 6:59 pm : link
then why not cut Stupar instead of Goodson when they acquired Mayo?
I don't know what you mean by main factor

The roster moves aren't complete yet. We are 9nly at 52.

eclipz928 : 9/6/2019 7:22 pm : link
paying the guarantee for being a vested veteran - but that wouldn't have been an issue if they kept Goodson on the roster instead of Stupar, right?
I would guess because the Giants knew Green Bay
Sneakers O'toole : 9/6/2019 7:52 pm : link
had interest in Goodson. They did a solid for the player by helping him land there
That's possible, but I think it's equally
eclipz928 : 9/7/2019 12:05 am : link
dickish of the Giants to keep a guy on the roster, who they seem to not have wanted to hold on to from the start, all the way up to just 48 hours before the first game of the season.

should have been on the roster in the first place - but these players are people. Unless there's a specific reason we don't know about, I don't think it's right to wait until this late to cut a player.

And it does make a difference - at this moment the Giants do not have a full 53 man roster, which isn't a huge deal but there's no advantage to doing that. And it's a missed opportunity for some player out there who doesn't have a team or a paycheck this week.
