How Mike Tomlin 's Big 3 Became Just Big Ben

Mr. Bungle : 9/6/2019 4:34 pm
I beg your forgiveness for yet another thread that involves Antonio Brown as a central character.

I considered linking to this fascinating article in one of the other twelve Brown threads, but I decided that there's a lot more to this fascinating story than just Brown. So I didn't want it to derail the discussions about Brown and the Raiders (his current team).

And I also thought this should generate its own distinct conversation in its own thread, since it's about much more than just Brown, but the Steelers. And perhaps even more than the Steelers.

Basically, it's a fascinating story about how Ben Roethlisberger being an entitled douche, Antonio Brown being a nutjob, and Le'Veon Bell losing trust in the organization made it impossible for Mike Tomlin to keep them all happy and productive Steeler superstars.

Here's a taste:

Quote:
Roethlisberger wasn't required to stay at the team hotel for home games like his teammates. He also openly criticized them on his local radio show and often ignored them by showing up late to team meetings. All with few repercussions from the Steelers.

Many players on the team had come to accept this. Brown, as well as star running back Le'Veon Bell, did not. Brown would openly tell teammates how Roethlisberger had his own set of rules while the receiver justified his own behavior over the past few years, according to current and former Steelers players. Brown ripped the 15-year veteran quarterback privately, too, once calling him, according to two team sources, "a fucking phony."

The distrust followed all three into last season. As his holdout dragged on for weeks, Bell, team sources maintain, began to echo what Brown had claimed: that Roethlisberger had long operated in a different world than the rest of the team. "If Ben didn't think he was getting paid enough, he'd do exactly what I'm doing, and not a single Steelers fan would have a problem with it," Bell told one teammate.

Tomlin was caught in the middle of the bitter feelings that were tearing the Steelers apart. It's difficult enough for a head coach to handle one or two superstars on offense. In this case, the team had three...

But Steelers sources say Tomlin didn't help himself when he sided solely with one of those stars: Roethlisberger. In doing so, as one former Steelers defensive player said, "Tomlin created a monster."

Did I mention that it's fascinating? - ( New Window )

You'd think a great Steeler like Troy Polamalu would still be involved with the franchise in some way, even if it just means popping in and visiting and mentoring some players or something.

But he won't step foot in the building until Tomlin is gone. Wow, that's telling.

Yes it is. And a phone call when cut? For Troy Polamalu? That's insane.
Interesting...

Why would Rapelisburgher want to stay in his own hotel? I’m sure the rest of the team isn’t staying at the Super 8. Just, what’s the point? It’s like a 10 or 15 nights a year.

And Tomlin couldn’t muster the courage or respect to speak with Polamalo in person?

Always hard to tell from one article, but both these guys seem like phony twats.

I wouldn't either if I were Polamalu

one thing I've thought was interesting is how the Pittsburgh local beat writers have come out of the woodwork since Brown's issues started flaring up over the summer, talking about how they witnessed first hand how the locker room devolved.

Which isn't hard to believe - but I'm not sure that they're entirely credible in that case. They can't afford to do anything to alienate Roethlisberger there, they'd be toast too. The easiest way to get in his good graces is to write an article taking his side.

He didn't stay at the hotel during home games. That means he was most likely staying at his house not a different hotel.
Maybe Tomlin tried

To trip them.

How do you alienate a class act like Palumalou. It's like some bush league org alienating class acts Coughlin and Snee.
Good link to that article...

Never knew Brown started showing up to Steelers practices with a full social media team. Just another jackass in the long list of jackasses represented by Rosenhaus - TO, Plax, Ocho, McCoy, Hill, etc.

There was a lot of chaos in that article. Makes you wonder how much we don’t know that went on there...

Oddly enough, I think Pittsburgh is the team to get out of the AFC this year. If they beat the Pats tomorrow night, they could be off and running.
And yet the Steelers keep winning (for the most part)

Wish we had their problems the last few years.
Thank you Ernie Accorsi

For picking Eli over that creepy douchebag. Especially since Ben can’t beat Belichick/Brady. Giants would never have won those SBs with Ben vas The Pats

I don’t think many, if any, teams in the NFL stay in a hotel the night before a home game. Do they?
