So who are we signing? Cleared 5 mil and 1 spot to fill?

George from PA : 9/7/2019 8:58 am
Is there anyone that will be an instant upgrade?

The Giants weakest unit imo are the LBers....so is Brandon Marshall an instant starter? Prior to Mayo....there were several names mentioned

Could it be a trade? I know he is hurt but I heard AC Green was on the trade block and that fills the #1 WR spot nicely.

Would to see another brick on the wall.....not just a bottom feeder.

Any ideas?

We aren’t signing anyone.

We need that money for injuries and what not over the course of the season.
I think they just wanted some breathing room...the cap room rolls over

and I guess they've identified Solder as someone they won't cut.

Lol...yea
$5M isn't much
SLIM_ : 9/7/2019 9:07 am : link
You need some for in-season replacements.

+1. Mostly building an emergency fund. Next year, the team will be in great shape from a salary cap perspective.
You guys are no fun......

I understand 5 mil is what most teams need to cover emergencies.....but i want some outside the box thinking.

Can DG have one more tinker to the roster.

Shummur all but admitted someone is coming....not currently on PS......I just want to reach for the stars

This
They are definitely going to sign someone.
Big Rick in FL : 9/7/2019 9:21 am : link
As they have a hole to fill. The move to restructure Solder's deal probably has little impact on that. They need money to sign guys incase injury happens.

Most likely the guy they sign will be for the vet minimum on a 1 year deal.

I should say

Not guaranteed but the full year's salary counts against the cap for everybody on opening day roster, after that it's pro rated
I like that

It's roster operating capital for the season.

Minimal impact on whether they'd cut him. He just: a) had a large 2019 base salary and b) several years remaining with which to pro-rate the money over.

From a total cap perspective, they don't owe him any more today than yesterday. They're just pushing the cap hit out until next year.

Not a lot of other options:
- Ogletree has 3 years remaining but only $4M base (max ~$2M 2019 cap savings).
- Jenkins has $10M base, but only 2 years left.

Really the only other options are Martin and Ellison and you're talking maybe $2M in savings each.

We're signing someone since we have an open roster spot. Just unlikely it's a big name vet for much more than the minimum.
'someone'
Torrag : 9/7/2019 10:21 am : link
Not for anywhere near the $5M. Just as likely we promote a PS player to fill out the 53.

trade targets (whether to acquire a player or picks for one of ours) if we falter early in the season. If a contenders QB goes down and Eli has played fairly well, he could be traded (if he agrees) to someone with a SB shot in need of a QB.

The Colts have a defense, running game, Oline and WR set all ready to make a playoff push. If Brisset goes down, Hoyer is not the answer. The Colts could do a half season rental to try and win it all.
We're clearing space for a 80s Laker?

At least nobody is suggesting Oliver Miller as a blocking TE

have to have operating room to sign guys when you inevitably get players injured. The Giants had no cap room even to sign someone off of their practice squad.
We have 52 on roster, so we are signing someone....
George from PA : 9/7/2019 3:35 pm : link
Shummur implied he was not coming from PS.

We are not using all of the 5 million....but someone is coming. I just wish it will be someone who will add some impact.
It is operational capital
Reale01 : 9/7/2019 4:38 pm : link
However, we also could sign someone. There are ways to do it with a minimal cap hit. Signs point to a vet signing. They most likely have a deal in place.
Isn't there some rule

where if the roster does not have a full 53, anyone can be signed off of our practice squad to another teams practice squad?

Anyone on the PS can be signed anytime as long as they go to that team's 53.
Just curious

Yes, but they cannot sign someone off of our PS to their PS (he must be signed to their 53).

I think the rule is if we do not have a full 53, they would be able to do that. I remember reading this somewhere on this site last year.
