The bullpen did well. The starting pitching killed them. Not having a bona fide closer is one thing, but the pen did well according to the network pundits. Sale has been garbage since last August. Porcello is back to what he was. Price has crashed since he was a Ray.

not getting a big-money reliever in light of the luxury tax I get. What was really problematic was being unable to add any of the low-price bullpen upgrades at the deadline (40 odd relievers were traded). That suggests that they were either remarkably close to the threshold or DD failed miserably in that task. But going forward they've got an uneven roster construction, a dynamic but somewhat top-heavy offense and a pitching staff that is likely to struggle to stay healthy with a shitty farm system to fill in the gaps.

DD sold out big time for a WS. This time around, he won one.

Meanwhile over in Mets world, they hold onto clueless managers 2 years too long and hire GM’s who are more Dumbrowski than Dom.

This is who Dombrowski is. He's not a guy you hire for a long term plan. He's the guy who goes all out to win right now, and that's exactly what they did. Now they have a bit of a WS hangover and they immediately fire the guy? Seems kind of silly to me.

Exactly, everyone knows who Dombroski is. He guts farm systems and writes big checks, makes big trades with the promise to win a championship. To cross over a quote from Denny Green "he is who we thought he was". Boston had a magical year last year where it all came together. That wasn't happening again.

I think the combination of the Yankees slapping them around all season, and the gap in organizational talent between the two teams and all the young talent/depth the Yankees showed this year and the Red Sox need to find a way to reload. The Yankees are poised to go on a long run again, and you have a good young team in Toronto too. The Red Sox are not set up for the future so they will fire him for doing exactly what everyone knew he was going to do.

It's the pitchers. And they're stuck with big deals for their best. It was the way he set it up and it turned out to be a losing strategy. Now the job is to work out of it. Could he be trusted to do that? Probably not. TIme to put up the "Big Job Available" sign -- and that's what they've done, well before those who might be interested find out how they fare in October.

Boston is a premiere job anyway, they're going to get their pick of even folks with solid contracts right now. This just looks like petty scapegoating from an organization that has a history of this sort of petty bullshit.

He did what he does, he maximized assets for a "win-now" team or to make a team a "win-now" team.

And he won a WS for his efforts.

In FL he did this and won a WS.
In DET he did it and went to 3 straight ALC's
in BOS he did it and won a WS.

now he moves on and the Red Sox bring in someone more suited to a long-term approach reload.

Where the Red Sox are today is not a team that says "Dombrowski is a good fit here".

Them doing it in the middle of the season and starting to leak out the negatives to justify it (Gammo on MLBN about the office culture/climate this morning) is petty. This is a team with a long and storied history of shitting on their own after they leave or are forced out (see also: Francona, Terry)

I guess. I hate the Red Sox as much as anyone, but maybe you could say this gives Dombrowski a better opportunity to catch on elsewhere once the firings begin.

Letting Dombrowski go at the end of the season would have made sense. Doing it a few hours after getting spanked by the Yankees seems dysfunctional.

Apparently there have been reports for quite a while that there was tension in the front office with Dombrowski and a few confidants (Mike Wren, Tony LaRussa) being increasingly uncommunicative and secluded from the rest of the admin. There may also be some power stuff going on within the ownership group which is feeding into this. I read that some of what's mixed into this are varying views in ability and/or willingness to sign Mookie before he hits FA (as he almost certainly will opt to do).

Should be fired.

I view it less as blaming him for where they are now vs now wanting him to lead them going forward.

He was there for 4 years and they won 3 AL East division titles and a WS. I don't think he has to worry about being blamed for anything.

They've been talking for a while about trading Mookie, but if those are my choices ($25M or so for JD or extending Mookie) it's a no-brainer.
