The balancing / seesaw act of building an NFL team...

...been thinking about this quite a lot given the composition of the current Giants team.

Clearly, the team needed to be re-built almost from scratch, and IMO Gettleman has done about as good a job as one could reasonably expect in two seasons given the circumstances.

But the biggest tasks for ANY General Manager in Gettleman's position is to put into place several players that will grow and mature together into a winning football team.

I think Gettleman has put together a credible offensive line. But it is not a young one (Solder; Remmers; Zeitler). He will now have to devote serious Draft and Free Agent resources to re-making his Linebacking unit; his Edge/Pass Rush unit; and probably his Safeties.

And that's the seesaw dilemma. Once Gettleman has accomplished that, he could very well have an O-line that has aged out and needs several players replaced.

We're gonna just have to cross our fingers that he will continue to Draft well and that once he is out of Cap Hell he can fill a few key holes with plus players from other teams.

But right now, the Giants roster seems to me to be in seesaw mode.

We keep applauding this rebuild

OBJ kept JR employed for longer than he should have. I sure hope that’s not the case with Saquon and DG. Dallas has loaded up with top end talent. Do we have top end talent or just starters on a bad team? This remains to be seen. Some of those guys we’ve been hyping didn’t show much yesterday.
When you have 5 or 6

Drafts in a row with basically nothing to show for it...

You'll need 3 or 4 to right he ship just to recoup talent.

It is kind of a fools errand to try to field a winning team and rebuild. You have to tank. It works. Countless examples in MLB and NFL...

Maybe the Miami Dolphins.
Cowboys are a good example of building the team thru the draft

They got lucky with Dak and Jaylon Smith. They built the Oline and have added key pieces each year to allow Prescott to grow into the job. They have also stayed away from expensive FA. They managed the cap very well and now have money to pay their key players.
The Giants have missed on draft picks and tried to fill holes with overvalued expensive free agents. We are paying the price but I think with Jones and Barkley we can build a competitive team with additional good drafts. Free agency only can help teams that are close.
