Looking at recent NYG head coaches & Shurmur status

Sean : 9/9/2019 2:07 pm
As we sit here at 0-1 for the 8th time since 2010, I’m thinking about the previous head coach hires this franchise has made. By no means am I punting the 2019 season (these next 3 games are huge), but the Shurmur sample size is growing.

The Giants are approaching a very tricky dilemma if things don’t turn around:

1. Fire Shurmur & become a franchise with frequent turnover at HC and no sustainable voice.

2. Keep Shurmur even though you may already know he isn’t the guy & waste time.

I really believe McAdoo flaming out really threw things up in smoke. McAdoo was young and came up under McCarthy/Coughlin. It felt like it could be a Tomlin type hire given his age, the intention was another ten plus years of stability at HC. Go back and read game threads from 2016, there’s a lot of “we found our guy, McAdoo will be here awhile.”

McAdoo flames out and becomes a punching line. This leads to Pat Shurmur. We keep hearing “he’s an adult”, he had previous HC experience, but he’s got a built in excuse with it being dysfunctional Cleveland. It was the safe hire coming off of McAdoo. But, his career record is awful and pressure is mounting here.

So many of these coaches flame out now, it’s a tricky spot to be in. Hiring these coordinators are a crapshoot. It worked with Fassel in that the Giants were generally competitive from 1997 - 2002 before the 2003 meltdown.

This takes me to Coughlin - he was the perfect candidate in 2004. A PROVEN head coach who was very successful in his previous spot and relatively young. He checked all the boxes and he lasted 12 seasons.

My point ultimately is that the Coughlin type candidate is hard to find. Kansas City was able to hire Reid who fits that criteria. Proven HC who has won elsewhere.

If this season is a 4-5 win campaign, it will be a very interesting question if there is a year of poor decisions/bad clock management. If they did move on from Shurmur, that Coughlin like candidate might not be there. JonC has said Mara likes the Packers model, so McCarthy might fill the criteria I mentioned, it’s interesting.

Bottom line, if the Giants don’t start winning, they are in a tricky spot.
No way on McCarthy

Not after McAdoo.
Not tricky...

...IMO.

If Giants regress from last season, Shurmur and his entire staff get shown the door.

Start afresh; start anew.

Not tricky IMO.
I hate Shurmur

but have little confidence in the Giants finding someone better. The pool of coaching candidates is disgusting. It's really Belichick and everyone else. I'm not even sold on McVay - his no-show in the Super Bowl was shades of Jim Fassel.
Likelyhood is

Shurmur gets a 3rd year. This roster has needed to be completely overhauled after the 5 worst consecutive drafts in team history, he's going to get a couple year grace period before being put on the hot seat.
Because of your first point

I think we have to stick with PS.. It sucks but i simply hope he learns and becomes better.
The key to our next HC will be

how well Daniel Jones looks this year and/or next year (if Shurmur survives three seasons) - a team with a solid young QB will always have an advantage during the coaching carousel.

This is my point. Mike McCarthy would fall under the criteria of proven HC who had prior success. Fans always want the young coordinator, but they mostly fail.

And, if the Giants go 4-12 and move from Shurmur, they *NEED* to be right. So, I’d anticipate a coaching search which involved proven success.

will probably require Shurmur to fire his coordinators as Coughlin did with of Gillbride Fewell Sheridan and Lewis
Not sure why Shurmur is having so much trouble.

All he has to do to succeed is to get Barkley as many touches as he can handle and I'm betting good things will happen.
Short of disaster

I don't want to see administrative changes this soon. Revisit after the 2020 season.

If they completely lose the locker room again, then maybe.
Stability for the Sake of Stability

Isn't necessarily a good thing, who cares about the voice if its one that produces losing. That said, barring an 1-15 type season, Shurmur will be back if for no other reason than Jones.
1 and 15?

Okay, mr. optimist.....
how can you evaluate a coach
Ron Johnson : 9/9/2019 3:27 pm : link
with such a bad roster? doesn't make any sense
shurmur
AndyMilligan : 9/9/2019 3:35 pm : link
gets to coach Jones and have significant time with him. At least one full season with Jones at QB.
shurmer needs to go but Gettleman first

that defense situation is atrocious.
Luckily the fans are not in charge

No way you cut bait with Shurmur or DG has some fools are proposing. Everyone gets at least another year. Give Betcher a pass rusher to work with, give the young secondary time to learn. At this stage DJ needs stability in the offense so we know what we have in him. Don't go having him learn a new system next year. Don't go replace DG with a new GM who might like at DJ as "not my guy."

The idiots are out today.
Agree with keeping Shurmur.
joe48 : 9/9/2019 4:08 pm : link
Let’s see him get to work with Jones. Typical knee jerk reaction to a loss
To a division rival.

you should be banned for mentioning McCarthy. Rodgers wanted him gone, waited and plotted for years to do it.
Have to play the season out we have had a ton of transition .
Bluesbreaker : 9/9/2019 5:29 pm : link
As of now I am skeptical just based on the playcalling
clock usage knowing the rules like when challenging ect.
Can't have too many of those types of mistakes.
Depending how the team carries itself and plays at least
500 ball is what I would expect and how we fair to
teams like Chicago Minnesota New England and especially
Philadelphia and rematch with the boys .
If were a 5 win team I say show him the door and do it again .
If he finishes 500 or better than I think were going in the
right direction .

Yeah, and what has Rodgers won without him?....
