Q: There were a couple of short yardage situations where you didn’t turn to Saquon, was that because of what the Cowboys were showing or is there another reason why you went in a different direction?
A: On one of the short yardages, we did go to him and he converted for us. A couple of times we tried to throw it to him, the one I guess where we got intentional grounding, I’ll be surprised if they don’t say that’s a bad call, because he was in the area of the throw. It wasn’t like we were going away from him, no.

This is my problem with Shurmur in a nutshell. You've got a big burly run blocking OLine and Saquon Barkley at RB. Stop overthinking everything and just hand the ball off. Let Barkley help you win the game/let this big bad OL assert itself. Perfect scenario to establish yourself as the running team you want to be.
Instead he calls a far riskier play action roll-out with an immobile QB to get Barkley a 3 yard pass to the flat (against an insanely fast Tampa 2 style D). And loses the game right there.
I want to like him, I really do. But he is borderline idiotic calling games so far, and I can't help but think he's an OC (not a HC).
yesterday where it seemed Barkley was the obvious choice and they just didn't do it.
Think of it this way (and yes, I know the overall game has changed):
Bill Parcells would run Barkley and run Barkley again down inside the red zone on short yardage. Joe Morris racked up 21 TDs in 1985 and 15 TDs in 1986 with many of them inside the 10 and inside the 5 yard line runs.
This is why do all that shit, thats why lift all those weights...
...you're philosophy on "Hog Mollies" and now you have a pro-bowl running back. Hand it to him in situations where the other team KNOWS what's coming...it then becomes an issue of "Can you stop it?" and that is what the Giants and Gettlemen seem to be striving for. The Eli Penney dive was the perfect example.
I don't want Saquon overused per se but DAMN man, go with what is working for you and dare the other team to stop it and until they do keep going there! That is a huge part of the idea of the run setting up play action.

Running between the tackles on 3rd (or 4th) and one works less than 50% of the time no matter who the RB is.
IS this a joke? You got me to laugh a little. Thank you for that. SO you're comparing/ using stats for some of the bottom rb's in the NFL to Barkley who is arguably the best RB in all of football and possibly will be among the greatest RB's ever?
Not to mention - but i will- the RB during this game - even taking away his 59 yard run -he averaged over 6 yards a carry. And you are using low level RB's to justify your stats while disregarding this fact and teh fatc he is among the best in the NFL?
RE: In case you haven't been following modern day football... Â
comes across to me as a guy that’s content with losing by some of the answers he gives and excuses he makes. I wish he would own up to his mistakes and show some fire.

Right, then you hand it off up the middle to SB the first two times then play action the 3rd time then run it the fourth. But handing it off to Penny? And having Eli out in the flats against this team didn't work when they were on the 40. Why would it work in a tighter window. Just not sure about Shurmur or Shula (or Betcher for that matter)

I can't disagree with you except that we didn't lose that game on that play call. It sure didn't help... lol... but that loss is 100% on the (utter lack of) pass defense.
suggested to shurmur behind closed doors that he either focus on the playcalling, or the head coaching. if he insists on doing the former, get a fucking assistant head coach in there. to this point, he appears comically overmatched in attempting to do both.

I agree. These comments still bother me. This game was a massive blowout.

It doesn't really seem like the Vikings miss him...

Great Post !
They definitely were trying to get too cute in those situations

I prefer passing it to SB in the flats on short yardage, even if he catches it behind the line there is a 95% chance he makes the 1st defender miss.
And if someone bites on the flats, you have an easy intermediate or long throw.
Part of the reason this is the case is the trend towards smaller linemen.
The Giants have bucked this trend and gone with a big line. The whole point of doing that is so you can smash it when you need to, or so I thought.
