"Former Steelers offensive tackle Tunch Ilkin, a current broadcast and radio analyst for the team, broke down Pittsburgh’s pass-rushing group. He mentioned Skipper as a player who caught his eye in training camp.
Ilkin said this on Skipper via Steelers.com;
'He is really quick upfield, and he’s got a great change of direction. He doesn’t waste steps. He’s a guy that’s very, very efficient in his pass rush. He’s got a nice body lean, so he’ll get the edge. He’s quick enough to get the edge. And he just has an uncanny anticipation of the snap count. That’s what makes him so effective to me.'
At Toledo, Skipper tallied 9.5 sacks in three seasons of play, with 8.5 of them coming in his last year. In 2018, he added 32 total tackles, 11.5 for a loss, and two forced fumbles to his sack totals. Skipper measures in at 6-foot-3 and 246-pounds; at his pro day, he recorded a 4.89 40-time, 30 225-pound bench press reps, and a 4.42 30-yard short shuttle time." Link - ( New Window )
in the presason. Also saw PFF had him as their #4 ranked rookie through the first three weeks of preseason:
Quote:
4. Tuzar Skipper (90.4)
He has been a dual-threat edge defender with solid play both against the run (85.4 run defense grade) and in the pass-rush (86.1 pass-rush grade).

Tuzar Skipper has been quite the surprise for the Steelers’ defense so far this preseason, as Skipper has recorded nine total pressures, seven defensive stops and a forced fumble en route to a 90.4 overall grade across 112 defensive snaps this preseason.

- JUCO transfer
- Tore ACL in 2017

It's a really great story. I am delusionally optimistic about this one. He absolutely dominated people in preseason.

Sounds like Steelers may have been trying to sneak Skipper through to the practice squad by waiving him on Saturday, but the Giants were sitting with an open roster spot and pounced today.

...won't help us. We need to draft a DE with our first rounder and a LB with our second. Plain and simple. Part of the rebuilding process. I wish we could get everything we want/need in one draft but it just don't work that way. Two years ago we pretty much needed one of EVERYTHING and we got Barkley (I didn't want them to take a QB in that draft and I'm so glad we didn't). This past draft we got a QB (time will tell if he was worth the sixth overall pick) and a big DT and a CB in the first round. We've worked on the line with Hernandez, Solder, Zeitler and Remmers. So next year we have to go with pressure on the QB.
I watch the games sometimes by position instead of where the ball is. You can just sense how a play is going to turn out sometime when you focus on the OL or the DL when the ball is snapped. I saw it last year and I saw it again yesterday...could see it immediately that the Giants had NO pass rush and no pressure so Dak was going to have all day long to throw and it showed. It may not be the most popular choice or concept but I believe you win and lose games in the trenches and one of our trenches is at least at the moment, GROSSLY underperforming.
So I'm hoping our DC does something to help them out with blitzes and/or our current edge rushers start changing the momentum or if not we are going to see a lot more long drives like we saw from the Cowboys yesterday, 7, 8, 9, 10 plays for 60, 70, 80, 90 yards. And what does that translate to? Our offense being OFF the field, no Daniel Jones, no Saquon, no revamped OL, no Evan Engram.
Again I get it, we can't fix everything in one or two drafts. Especially with as many holes as we've had and the changing of the culture the coaches and owners and GM have been attempting to achieve. So this as I see it is the next logical step. Gotta find a force to get some pressure and a LB who can make some plays consistently.
Skipper had five sacks and two forced fumbles in four preseason games.
Who cares? You ought to know better by now that preseason is virtually meaningless. How did the Steelers pass rush look last night against the pass and yet they couldn't find room for this wunderkinder? Wake us when this guy does anything.

He may be a steal, he may not be. What you said has no bearing on that though. The Steelers under Tomlin never keep more than 4 edge rushers. They have Watt, Dupree, and Chikillo who were locks. They love Ola Adeniyi and local reports pegged him as their "camp star". How good was our pass rush last year? We cut Okwara who had 7.5 sacks with the Lions...

Why even include the first part? 8.5 sacks as a senior is great.

He had five sacks this preseason. Not too shabby
At least it wasn't Gilligan !
He's slow over 40 yards. Good thing that isn't how OLB is played.

Damn skippy!
Funny. Those two clips were against his college teammate, Logan Woodside.

Four partial preseason games.

Nice call
he looks pretty solid too , seems like Steelers
were trying to slip him through good job picking him up !

Locking in what positions you NEED to draft in each round doesn't strike me as the best plan.

Well played, well played...
Just a hunch, but I think Martin is not long for this team and Skipper is replacing him. I think an ILB is still to come.
