Kill me with all the boobs running around in the Giants' secondary that Eli Apple, 10th overall pick in the 2016 draft, now solid starting LCB for Saints, and he just missed a trip to the Super Bowl last year.
You don't have to be Gil Brandt to know that you don't give up on a 10th overall after two seasons when his rookie year was very promising.
They could have probably kept Hankins (who just signed a two year deal with Raiders) or Harrison to be the run defender/no pass rush DT. Nope, they both go and we burn a first rounder on another run defense/no pass rush defender. Except we're not even sure how good he'll be against the run.
Let's see:
1. Locker room cancer - Check
2. Complete lack of ball awareness - Check
3. Refusal to make tackles -Check
Yeah, I can see why he is of such value.
Did you happen to hear, repeatedly throughout the broadcast tonight, that the Texans were targeting Apple? He looks the part, but is at best a below average NFL CB. Deandre Baker will get better, and has a much stronger college resume than Apple ever did. Ballentine has already shown more in pre-season than Apple has in 3+ NFL seasons. The Saints will not re-sign him when his rookie deal ends.
If you read between the lines when Shurmur talks you get the sense Â
Halapio - He's been trashed by BBI relentlessly, in the past. I'm glad he's getting the opportunity to prove the nay-sayers wrong.
Engram - With OBJ gone, he is the best RECEIVER on the team (despite the coaching staff's stubborn reluctance to admit it.)
Bethea - Face it, the guy is DONE; he makes the mistakes that an inexperienced player makes and now he's old. Give Love a chance, teach him, stop wasting your time on a has been from the lousy
Browns.
Connelly - I want to see a LOT more from him. He's young, and a late pick, but this guy GETS IT.
X-Man - Play him give him a chance to learn and he will shine. Nothing to lose, the other guys (including retreads Golden & Martin proved they can't rush the QB)
Baker - Sure he got beat badly, but he's going to be more than fine when his leg injury heals. In the mean-time, why didn't Ballentine play, looked darned good in pre-season.
Hamilton - Doesn't belong in the NFL.
Eli -I love Eli, but it's time for Jones. The game is not too big for him; he's a dart thrower and can become a young Dak (and better because he has an Eli-like IQ)
Peppers - We ran Collins out-of-town because he couldn't cover tight ends; he has the most to prove. Did the Browns screw us with this guy too, I hope not.
Jackrabbit - Only man in the secondary worthy of the uniform, this past Sunday; so much for the clamor around here to see him gone. Crazy.
Oline looked solid against a purported all world star studded D Â
Remmers was Flowers on a good day, but I'll take that every time going against Lawrence, instead of Lawrence getting 6 sacks against me in Madden.
Run D solid against purported all world SB bound, presumably DLaw in effect. Our run D was hopelessly painful last year without Snacks.
Terrible coaching. Just some indicators shitgrinning Garrett was toying with Shurmur was the fake screen where the receiver got lit up and the 3rd and 4 designed run play where Dak just ran away from the over loaded side blitz. Butcher was getting abused all day with his poorly disguised Cover 0 blitzes, that has got to fuvking stop.
Well Eli is on pace for 4800 yards, 95 QBR and a 68% completion to trigger corner.elihatecentral.com XD
And not bring up the fact that when Eli rolled right and fumbled Shepherd was actually tackled 10 yards down field (his target) and nothing was called?
Also what the hell was the deal with giving Dallas the benefit of the doubt on the 12 men in the huddle BS?
Both were key penalties that would have extended drives and when you add in the 3 times Eli was crunched in the helmet never called this game could have been different
I didn't think Shepard getting mauled was that big of a deal. Manning was out of the pocket and that kind of contact happens often. It was excessive and it could have been flagged, but I have seen worse go uncalled especially when it doesn't impact the play.
The 12 men on the field could have been called but that, too, happens more than you think and DAL did call the timeout. I wouldn't say NYG got screwed by the refs but the questionable calls certainly did go in favor of DAL more often

The refs literally ignored the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty Pat Mugshot committed for throwing the challenge under 2 minutes.
Later in the drive, Manning had a 4th-and-1 play-action rollout where there was nothing to lose. The initial read was Sterling Shepard, who was running along the goal line more than open enough. Manning hesitated, again, and held onto the ball with multiple DAL defenders closing in on him. The cement-footed QB did his best version of a juke but it resulted in a sack-fumble. A turnover. He has to know by now that in a situation where you are down 18 in the second half and you are that close to the end zone, you have to throw it. Even a blind, toss-it-up-and-hope-for-the-best throw would have been better than holding onto it. Manning’s reaction time, his sluggish movement on long-developing screen plays, and underlying fear to make things happen are going to get him on the bench at some point.
with a blatant shot to Zak's head. We only tend to see the bad calls that go against us.
The Cowboys (Lawrence was one) also got away with 2 hits to Eli's head.
The big difference is that in 2 key situations they picked up (legit) flags thrown on Dallas. It's not like they didn't see the penalties in the heat of action (like Latimer? being pulled down on the hailmary). They literally got the calls correct and then a separate official overruled them.
RE: This is what I've been saying about Mannining Â
Manning’s reaction time, his sluggish movement on long-developing screen plays, and underlying fear to make things happen are going to get him on the bench at some point.
He just looks like he's moving in slow motion....especially noticeable when you see Jones come in and play.
I've often said it, as players get older it isn't necessarily the foot speed that leaves them, it's reaction time. Their reflexes just aren't what they used to be. I hate to say it because it was the defense that blew this game, but if they lose to the Bills, it should be time for Jones to start.
RE: Gee, what an odd take by Sy here...anybody disagree? Â

Not an odd take at all. He was open, he just waited too long.
I rewatched the first half last night, and while I am a strong believer in not blaming the refs (good teams overcome bad officiating) they did stop our second strong drive where they missed a hack to Elis head by Lawrence and the PF/Int Grounding call. As much as Dallas marched down the field the rest of the game we were doing it in the first half or at least the first quarter. It felt like after that drive the OL play calling got too cute. Ad nauseum how do you not use Barkley if not twice at least once in that short yardage situations? He was bouncing off initial tacklers all night it seemed. I mean hand off up the middle to him the first one or two times then play fake it. It worked and will continue too. I felt the same way at the beginning of last year but Shurmur has some major flaws he needs to correct.
I'm not going to defend Eli here cause that debate will never end, but hey he had a 8-9 yard scamper during that second drive....he put Dak to shame! LOL. I can't remember the last time we drafted a decent linebacker. And I can't remember the last time we could stop anyting short over the middle. Maybe we had no pass rush because Dak was getting rid of the ball quickly for the most part. Their drives were long drawn out and tired our already bad defense. We have an improved OL. Run the Fing football. Go for the short vanilla passes under 10 yards. Matriculate the ball down field and keep our defense OFF if it. Thought this would be a good thread to bury 'My take on the game' instead of starting a thread. Thanks for your time.
RE: RE: Gee, what an odd take by Sy here...anybody disagree? Â
Cowboys are a top 5 NFL team right now.
Nothing from this game should have been surprising.
The Giants have the same problems on offense and defense that they did at the end of last year and the year before.
The Eagles would have done the same thing to them had the Eagles been the opening day opponent instead of the Cowboys.
It's like Groundhog Day with this franchise.
1. So what do we do with Bethea?
2. Do we feel better with the backups?
3. Is Ballentine ready?
4. I’m not worried about Baker. He missed three weeks and that was his first game.
5. I will withhold comments on our pass rush until we play a team that does not have a top 5 OL. You are not supposed to abuse those those guys...that is why they are top 5.
6. I’m glad we included Beal on the 53. This way he has a chance to play the second half of the season.

The game is moving too fast for Eli at this point.
sending Baker out there and getting his confidence shook. A big part of his game at Georgia was the swagger with which he played.

Oh please. If you lose your confidence after a few games, it's likely you never had it. You know what would have been smart though? Putting Jenkins on Cooper all day, since he is by far, our best corner right now.
With Bettcher in his second year, are you seeing any flaws in the system itself or how he is calling games?
I understand there are some young players and talent deficiencies, but am curious to know if you are seeing trends with his defense that are being exploited.

It looks like it may be time for me to eat crow regarding Halapio. I will happily do so.
Coming into this season, I thought the upside for this team would be middle-of-the-pack. For me, this review supports that upside expectation (dream?).
The coaching looks pretty crappy though. Might be a long, long season. Again.
RE: RE: Oline looked solid against a purported all world star studded D Â
Well Eli is on pace for 4800 yards, 95 QBR and a 68% completion to trigger corner.elihatecentral.com XD
Uh, Eli’s QBR was 22.4 His YPA was 6.95.
To quote Sy, the “cement footed QB” missed some key opportunities Sunday. He wasn’t dreadful but he wasn’t able to create enough points either.
I don't trust a rating system that you can't verify by putting in the data yourself. Those kind of rating systems can be manipulated to back up an agenda.
Because you're right. Eli wasn't dreadful. He just didn't create enough points. But a 22.3 QBR is dreadful. By comparison, Mayfield threw three picks. His QB rating said he sucked. So did his QBR. But according to QBR, he didn't have quite as bad a performance as that shitbag Eli Manning.
is a strong team or not (they are) you would expect a division rival to be much better prepared to play them. We’ve been seeing this same DAL offense for 15 years now, you would think we’d have a handle on it by now. We look like we have no idea what they do.
Is not wasted. The weaknesses that were so vividly exposed all need to be addressed.
Bottom line - The old vets, they're not going to get better. The young guys, they need to play, to grow; Jones, Connelly, X-Man, Ballentine Baker. I'd even like to see that kid LB on the practice squad, Tauaefa get a shot.
With Bettcher in his second year, are you seeing any flaws in the system itself or how he is calling games?
I understand there are some young players and talent deficiencies, but am curious to know if you are seeing trends with his defense that are being exploited.
Can't say I have the credibility to knock on the scheme.
But the biggest issue is this team can't generate pressure with 4, maybe even 5 rushers. They have to blitz, leaving the cover guys susceptible.
that's on them, and on those that acquired them. And while there's enough of that, there's even more not knowing WTF to do. And that's all on the coaches. And specifically a big, stinky t*rd on Betcher's doorstep. And he needs to clean that up.
If the defense is predicated on pressure and man cover, and you've got players who can't apply pressure, and can't cover in man, what are you going to do? You can't replace the whole roster, so you better make the best use of what you've got, and make sure they know what to do.
It looks like it may be time for me to eat crow regarding Halapio. I will happily do so.
Couple months ago I started a thread on Halapio. The gist of the thread was that he was more or less completely unproven (he was, maybe still is?), that FO was taking a big gamble in not grabbing a 'better', more experienced C. I didn't dump on his play because there weren't enough snaps over 1+ games to know whether he was bad.
All that said, it was a thread that raised serious doubts about Halapio. If they are being put to rest, am happy to eat that cold dish of crow too.
RE: RE: RE: Oline looked solid against a purported all world star studded D Â

And getting Hamilton out of there and inserting Ballentine.
It's decisions - or lack of - that drive me crazy with NFL coaches.
The QB lost his courage for the game a while back. Look, OBJ has his own issues for sure, but when he said it was getting harder and harder to be successful here, he was referring to the QB not being willing to stay engaged long enough to throw a deep ball. Think about Watson's 2 passes on his last drive last night. When is the last time NYG went over the top like that? Our guy would rather check down or do his "hurl himself on the ground" routine. And when you don't present a deep threat, DBs get to walk their way closer to the LOS and take away space/opportunity.
I don't know if our QB has lost his courage for the game or not....but that video Dallas just released sure as hell shows that our opponents think he has. They were laughing at Eli for how afraid he was to get hit.
Looked closer regarding coverages than it sounded .
LBs and safeties letting TEs get off the line completely untouched and unshadowed. Couple of missed guesses and couple of DBs having trouble with larger wrs.

So many personnel mistakes. Which was the worst?

Kill me with all the boobs running around in the Giants' secondary that Eli Apple, 10th overall pick in the 2016 draft, now solid starting LCB for Saints, and he just missed a trip to the Super Bowl last year.
eli Apple last year accrued among the most penalty yards for a DB. And to start the year off, he gave up several completions last night, including a deep bomb to Fuller.
"Solid" does not describe his play, anymore than saying Hamilton as a starting CB means he is good.
He also had a penalty that gave the Texans a first down to keep a drive alive and had more than one missed tackle. But, yeah, he's great. Shoulda kept him.
Googs said much of this yesterday in a different thread and people kind of went berserk on him. Sy' says essentially the same and everyone...Great review Sy'

Not an odd take at all. He was open, he just waited too long.
It was a bit of sarcasm for the ever-lasting defenders...
Hey pal, we’re agreeing here!!!!!
Yes we are.
Again.

Can't say I have the credibility to knock on the scheme.
But the biggest issue is this team can't generate pressure with 4, maybe even 5 rushers. They have to blitz, leaving the cover guys susceptible.
If the defense is predicated on pressure and man cover, and you've got players who can't apply pressure, and can't cover in man, what are you going to do? You can't replace the whole roster, so you better make the best use of what you've got, and make sure they know what to do.
All that said, it was a thread that raised serious doubts about Halapio. If they are being put to rest, am happy to eat that cold dish of crow too.
But according to QBR, he didn't have quite as bad a performance as that shitbag Eli Manning.
Nice.

sending Baker out there and getting his confidence shook. A big part of his game at Georgia was the swagger with which he played.

And getting Hamilton out of there and inserting Ballentine.
It's decisions - or lack of - that drive me crazy with NFL coaches.
Don't coach in fear, go get the victory.
LBs and safeties letting TEs get off the line completely untouched and unshadowed. Couple of missed guesses and couple of DBs having trouble with larger wrs.
Biting on run action and avoiding or ignoring tight ends
