Watching the Spider Lockhart feature this morning, and remembering back to my earlier days watching football, it occurred to me that unless it's a last-ditch desperation kickoff type of thing in the waning seconds of a game, when do you see a lateral these days?
This is obviously not a pressing topic lol. Just seem to recall more attempts - even though risky - on maybe a reverse or an interception return.
And yeah yeah, no gadget plays! But seriously, no one puts in a little "hook-n-ladder" type of play a couple times a season? Seems it might catch a defense off guard.
Likely that teams/coaches went away from lateral-type plays, encouraging safety and ball control over the riskier moves. But it's too bad. Pretty exciting to see those situations play out, no matter from which side of the ball you're rooting.
I saw maybe 5 plays from that game. Interested to know if anyone saw ... and if it was a lateral. If so, figures it would be the Patriots.

against the Steelers on Sunday night? Or was it a flea flicker?

During pro football's first 30 years or so laterals were more common place and by design. Now they are an improvisational move that only occur a handful of times over the course of a season on a kick return or defensive return.
That's what made that Miracle In Miami play so memorable last year - not only was it a designed lateral play by an offense, it featured two laterals and they executed it to perfection. We probably won't see another play like that for 10 years.

If you watch the Pats, these plays are put of their playbook and they do them in big games too.........in fact Brady dropped on in the SB versus Philly that was a pretty big play............
