no longer (very sad), Katz is the best Jewish deli in NYC in my opinion. I worked in NYC for twenty six years, on the NYSE and trading desks, and ordered from Katz and Carnegie often enough. I preferred Carnegie, but no longer an option.
pastrami might be the best on the planet. Seriously. The other meats are ok but the pastrami is special. I have heard that Langer's in LA is close or equal to, but in the NY area there is not equal, honestly. For corned beef second avenue deli was always better, imo.
If you go in the summer bring a flywatter because they are all over the place. They do make a nice sandwich, however I always thought The Stage Deli was better but they have closed their doors.

Carnegie was pretty good, but it was not in Katz's league for pastrami.
Russ and Daughters different menu more salmon focussed , fancier
russ and daughters is very good.. but like all the big smoked fish places in NY (most anyway) they get their fish from ACME in greenpoint which you can go get yourself at a discount on Friday mornings.

Yes, Langer's is better.
RE: There are plenty of places in the area that are at least on Katz level Â
To say that it’s the best is to acknowledge that there aren’t many delis left
that serve that kind of food. Or it’s the goyim talking. That said, it is a place to go at least once if only for the people watching. For what this is worth,my wife loves the place
The Pastrami is the best on earth. That on rye with mustard and All dill pickles (they give you dill and half dill as the default - the half dill are basically cucumbers, barely pickles in my mind)
And make sure the carver sees you throw a couple bucks in the tip jar right away. They'll take better care of you.
Too much meat on the sandwich. "Would you like anything else with the pastrami sandwich?" "Yeah, a loaf of bread and some other people"
-Mitch Hedberg
That's funny but fair. The last time I went to Harold's was after a fishing show, so I brought back sandwiches for the kids.
I mistakenly ordered 'large' sandwiches - which weighed about 3 lbs each - and included an extra 8 slices of rye bread each. We were eating pastrami for 4 days.

in times square is good if you don't want to go to Katz's.
I think Katz's is absolutely worth going to if you've never been, but otherwise I wouldn't make a special trip there.
Juniors' sandwiches aren't obscenely massive like Katz', but still enough for a grown man to struggle to finish.
And their pastrami is also delicious though served on two onion rolls, but they do have rye and other breads available if you prefer and they have all the standard deli fare plus they're famous for their cheese cake.
I've never had it, but people like it. My kids like the hot chocolate.
I have heard the Brooklyn location is better, but I suspect that's more nostalgia than actual food quality difference. but I have never been to the Brooklyn location.
Usually I go to Juniors for breakfast, but have been many times for lunch and I'd go there without hesitation if it was more convenient than somewhere else with a better reputation.

Wait up - you've been going to Juniors for the pastrami and not the cheesecake?
Juniors is average as far as pastrami goes. It's the cheesecake that they're excellent at.

Exactly! It's like going to Peter Lugar's for the wedge salad!
so I don't profess to think my opinion is better or more worthy than anyone else's, but it is surprising to me how many people are not in love with Katz's on this thread. It is, quite literally, the best deli sandwich I have ever had. I live in NYC and have had it hundreds of times over the last twenty years and never get sick of it. I have also had Junior's pastrami and I would say that it is average at best. Carnegie Deli was never good, imo. Second Avenue Deli is very good, not nearly as good as Katz's and the pastrami is much leaner, but it is good.
An underrated deli is there is this place in the Reading Terminal Market in Philly called Hershel's (I think) and they have a good pastrami that seems to have been modeled on Katz's.

My wife and kids get it, but I don't eat sweets.
and I usually go for breakfast and their eggs benedict is great.
but I have been many times for lunch and their pastrami is fine to me.
their Brooklyn location is actually their best, it's not just nostalgia. I went to HS a few blocks from there, and was taken aback by how different the other locations were (not the cheesecake, which apparently is made in Brooklyn).
It is a dump though, even with the neighborhood having considerably improved since then it has remained very much the same.
Looks amazing. Never been there but it looks awesome. See link below about 9:20 in to the video.
I’ve been to Katz deli and it was definitely worth the trip.
Super sandwich. Link - ( New Window )

If you want to spend like $15 for soup...2nd Ave. Deli is a rip.
That is actually not true. If you want to pay by debit/credit card you can bring your ticket to the back by the deserts and sodas and they will run it through the machine and staple it to your ticket. When you walk out you just give them your ticket with the stapled receipt.
UES in the upper 70s is every bit as good as Katz's without the lines and tickets or having to eat in a gymnasium filled with tourists.
i can't let this pass, sorry... i went to a Pastrami Queen location and it was below average. That location as since closed. Maybe the UES location is better but from the Yelp review it doesn't look like it. You're comparing that to the gold standard of NY pastrami?
Second Avenue Deli pastrami is not as good as KAtz's but everything there is at least pretty good. I saw someone complain about the soup prices. Well I haven't gotten soup from second ave deli since they moved, which must be 15 years ago at least, but the soup was expensive then and I can tell you it is the best soup in the world and worth every penny. They have the best matzoh ball soup it is (or was) seriously not close. If someone ifs going to say different ... just don't. The matzoh ball with chicken soup and dumplings.. best shit in the world... and you got people here bitching about the price.

Yes, Langer's is better.

On the East Coast, the only place that comes close to Katz's Â
if you haven't been there before, it's not just the food, it's an old time venue that is classic and just isn't available elsewhere. The food, incidentally, is outstanding, and if you love pastrami, then you will love it there. They also have wonderful classic sour pickles there.
Katz is really a solid entry. I think when you get to the top tier it is about the individual experience and with how busy most of them are, that can be hit or miss. Thankfully for Katz' i've never been disappointed.
If you're already in Jersey - it's a way's off but not sure where you're coming from, Harold's in Edison isn't too shabby either.

I second, third, and fourth Harold's. It's amazing. Used to stop there with HopeJ going back home from the games...you know, when we used to WIN.
no there aren't

I said Edison but I was thinking Lyndhurst (my NJ geography sucks). It is still open the last I checked a couple of months back.
they do have very good hot dogs it is true.. best in NY i'm not sure but it is in the convo.

I prefer half dill, dill is a bit too sour.

Another great Jewish (not Kosher) Deli is Sarge's on Third Ave. in the 30s. Their chopped liver is the bomb.
