Home opener must win

EJJ : 9/10/2019 2:16 pm
First off FUCK THE COWBOYS! It's total bull shit we have to open year after year in Their stadium.
Who in the NFL scheduling dept. is Jerreh supplying whores too?? The Refs as well.
Must of us knew where this game was going BUT dam it hurts.

Moving on. The Giants have to win this Sunday!! From a fan stand point, getting on board and excited about our team and the season and from a team stand point, feeling good about all the hard work paying off and believing in each other and the direction the team is headed a win this week will be huge.
Eric made a comment that the Bills game might be a must will IMHO I totally agree. A record of 1-1 right now would give us all hope, 0-2 it'll feel like dam another shit year playing for draft picks.
Don't get me wrong I know there is a lot of season ahead but 0-2 would be devastating.

0-2 ushers in the Daniel Jones

Sunday was one game...

But it distinctly felt just like a continuation of 2017 and 2018. I'm expecting a loss. And I'm expecting total media chaos until DJ starts during the Cards game. And then when he doesn't or does perform well, I'm expecting total media chaos to continue.

This is the first year I remember in my time as a Giants fan, I could

care less what the outcome of week 2 was. We win, cool I guess we have a chance to play competitive football past Halloween. We lose, cool I get to see the DJ era started sooner rather than later.
0-2...

...is normal here. The bar is so low now that anything close to a competitive game is considered progress. At some point the SB trophies will be wearing paper bags over them.

Maybe coach will stretch him to 16 touches instead of 15 in order to save him for meaningful December games /S
Normally my reaction to this type of question
joeinpa : 9/10/2019 4:05 pm : link
Is that it is an overreaction, and that the 2cnd game of a season can never be a must win

But given 8-25, it sure feels like it.

But for me as a fan it is not nearly as important as
It has been in other years in regard to my rooting interest. This season is in large part about Daniel Jones.

I ve been an advocate of Eli getting this season. But if they continue to be non competitive, those arguing Eli should have been gone gain credibility
I knew a must win thread was coming...

This team needs to be 2-1.
Not a must win.

If they aren't 2-2 or better after 4 games though, things are going to get ugly at Met Life.

I think Eli gets at least 3 games. But if the Giants are 1-3 after 4 and it includes an ugly home loss to the 'Skins, then I think they'll make a change.

If they're 2-2 after 4 games I think they'll stick with Eli for a while.

Very nice. +1
My kids have soccer on Sundays which is a blessing

Because I get to tape the game and watch and rewind and mute the stupid broadcast or just ignore it if its a horrendous loss. But even though I am back to expecting futility each game I am looking forward to some decent OL play and thus a nice running game to watch. And ever the optimist, I am looking for improvement from Lawrence on the DL and Baker in the D Backfield. The Bills being a weaker opponent than Dallas in my opinion, I expect to be able to watch this game this week.
I agree, a win is important
5BowlsSoon : 9/10/2019 4:53 pm : link
To be 0-2 and lose at home after such a promising preseason would hurt.

Having said that, the defense will not be playing the Dallas Cowboys high powered offense with many mega stars and a buff OL. The Bills offense is workmanlike and void of stars, so we should not be overwhelmed like we were in Dallas.

John Brow, Cole Beasley, and Zay Jones are okay......but quite a drop off from Cooper, Gallup, and Cobb.

And now having said all that, I come to Eli Manning. Honestly, I do not believe he is best suited to run Shurmurs offense. It pains me to watch him roll out and he is not that accurate on short-intermediate passes as DJ is. Yes, he has gobs of experience, but look at his stats the past 5 years. Are you impressed? Im not. He will be 39 in a few months. I guess what Im saying is this.....we might lose because he falters when we need him. I hope not though. Lets see.
Close to must win
Lines of Scrimmage : 9/10/2019 4:59 pm : link
If the Giants planned to be in contention this year with Eli then they have to go 4-2 in Division and 5-5 outside. The Division record is imperative.

For now the talk is mostly Eli and the transition to Jones. I actually think if they don't put up a very good showing on offense and much improvement on D then this staff should not be getting a free pass.

Shurmur really needs to start winning imo. He also should be allowed to run the team as he wants but be held accountable for the results. This is not his first rodeo in the big seat.

All you have to do is go back two weeks on BBI to read all the bravado about the Giants shocking the world and 10 win prediction seasons, as well as Eli Manning "F*** You" tour rhetoric. Not to mention media conspiracies against the Giants because of all the disrespect.

Interesting to see to now see BBI littered with, "I expected this" and "It was always a 4-5 year rebuild." Almost as if no one wants to admit what this franchise has been since 2012 (by the way, every team has won the NFCE at least twice since the Giants last playoff victory).
Betcher better fix that defense

By simplying it, running more man to man, blitz a bit and let his players just play.
How did I not realize until just now

Bills start off the season with back to back games at Met Life. Interesting. I wonder who the last team was to play Jets/Giants in back to back weeks in the Meadowlands.

I don't even think it's that simple. I think the job belongs to Eli as long as A) he is still under contract and B) the Giants are still mathematically (somewhat realistically) in contention for the playoffs. If there's any shot at salvaging a winning season still on the table, I think Shurmur is going to ride Eli. Even at 1-3 things are still technically salvageable. Not to mention Eli has become known as "the Brady killer" regardless of what point in his career he's at and I doubt they pull him one week before that showdown.

Take a look at the first 10 weeks leading up to the Bye: Bills, Bucs, Skins, Cardinals, Lions, and Jets are all beatable opponents (that's 6 games), no matter how bad we looked this past Sunday. I believe if we're 5-5 or better at the Bye, Eli will be given a chance to make one last run and push this team into the playoffs. If we're below .500 then I think it will be pretty clear we're out of contention / need to shake things up / need to get a head start on Jones's development and I think that's when you'll see them use the Bye week to usher Jones in. I think the only way we see Jones before then is if we literally only have 1 or 2 wins going into the 2nd Dallas game.
Or maybe I should just call that "the Pats killer"
Leg of Theismann : 9/10/2019 5:37 pm : link
Since he's not actually facing Brady on the field lol. But he's proven throughout his career to be the kryptonite to Belichik's defensive genius so I think he's kept around until at least that game.

You know what would kill that tradition? The Giants winning a frikkin opener.
So many new players

they need a longer time to jell. This is what a rebuild looks like.
I said in the prediction thread last week that if they start 0-2
sb from NYT Forum : 9/10/2019 6:59 pm : link
...which I think they will, were looking at 6-10 tops, but probably 5-10. And Jones starting by the Jets game.
Anyone feel good....
thrunthrublue : 9/10/2019 7:21 pm : link
About taking the points with this Schumer led teams bend, bend, break....bend, break, bend over no pass rush/defense?
Its all about Defense.....
Simms11 : 9/10/2019 7:52 pm : link
If we can play some semblance of defense, then theres a chance. Its a shame, but the bad defense might actually end up forcing the Giants to play DJ sooner and it wont be because of Eli IMO, because well be out of playoff contention pretty quickly.

That we play competitive football. The Jets had this game won and they weren't really playing well. The Buffalo front could be trouble, Ed Oliver excels at what our OC and LG struggle with but he can be leaned on and moved. It's a solid fundamentals type 4-3 it can be had if we are willing to play keep away offense and just blanket the secondary. No man coverage or Allen will run wild and he has done it. I stick Jenkins on John Brown anywhere he lines up and zone the rest. I play one ILB, namely Connelly and use Love or Ballentine as the replacement. Get speed out there and sit in throwing lanes, Allen still struggles with reads down field.

The drop off from the Cowboys to Bills on offense should be enough that we can hold them to 20-24 and if we lean on Barkley and Engram we can eek out a win. Trust your talent on offense and don't fall in love with your playbook. We were blowing holes in the Dallas front 7, we just didn't play a smart game. We lose this and it's going to get ugly fast. This team needs confidence, period.
