That doesn't mean what you think it means. He can waive it. If a contenders QB goes down and they come a calling the Giants can ask Eli to waive the clause. One more shot at a SB might get him to consider.
speculation is apparently as rampant as it is unlikely, especially since the Jaguars just traded a fifth round pick for Dobbs. Someone else also noted that Minshew had a good game on Sunday. So why would they now trade for Eli? Eli is aging and Immobile. Nobody is trading for him. He also has a no trade clause.
is the LAST reason this would not happen. Not sure why people are using that as a reason. The Chiefs along with the other 30 teams in the NFL hardly had a book on this kid. He gets inserted into a game, plays well and all of a sudden he's going to be a good replacement for Foles? I highly doubt it!! The book on this kid is now out and if the Jags really think they would win with that defense and roll players on offense they should jump at the opportunity to grab Manning.

What makes this season as a possibility is that with Luck retiring, every AFC South team has to think the division is wide open. Titans won, but the rest lost. Give it another week because if Houston, Indy, and Tenn. win and Jax loses because of Gardner, then Tom will be burning up the phone lines looking for someone to hold the fort. Foles will be eligible to return Week 11. They aren't going to flush the season - their 25 Anniversary Season on relying on Gardner.
If we lose against the Bills and Washington, Manning might be replaced anyway. He can opt to finish his final year as a spectator or waive his NTC and play in Jax for 8 weeks until Foles returns.
Not even worth discussing once you consider a cap hit that we can not afford to take
What are you talking about? The Giants aren't upside down on Eli's contract. If they were to trade Eli, they'd be stuck with $11.7M of dead money, but would net +$11.5M of cap space.
There's a handful of reasons why this is probably not worth discussing. Cap ramifications aren't one of them.

Minshew just didn't put up stats, he looked like he belongs in the NFL. He looked exactly like he did at Washington State. He fell because he doesn't have the strongest arm. That might not be a huge issue there as they have some nice weapons and Fournette in the backfield. The offense isn't going to look much different than it did under Foles. There is a reason they traded for Dobbs and didn't make an attempt to get Eli.

Well for us. Jacksonville is up against the cap.
? They have 10M in cap space. GD quoted the $11.5M in savings, but he has already earned 1 week's salary. 2 weeks salary reduces Eli's salary remaining to $10M. So while it is not likely to happen. The cap ramifications aren't the reason that it won't.
think there is a market for Eli yet sorry. The Jags have Foles coming back in a few weeks. If they pick up a QB they will get a good career backup or an other young guy with upside.

Foles is NOT coming back in a few weeks! He has a broken clavicle and is on the IR.
It is a cap savings for us. Every week that we don't pay Eli's salary reduces the overall cap charge. The roster bonus, workout bonus, pro-rated signing bonus have to be eaten regardless whether Eli is on the roster or not. He will earn a $11.5M salary this year. $718K/wk is his salary.
I'm not saying it will happen. I want Eli to finish his career in blue. But despite him doing his job, he has no control how the defense plays. If we continue to lose, Jones will get the start irregardless of how well Eli plays. If Eli stays in blue, he will likely end his career as a spectator and with an overall losing record.
The Jags on the other hand have a window to compete for the post-season. Foles will return from IR in week 11. Maybe Minshew will indeed prove adequate to hold down the fort. A loss in the conference and a loss in the division this week, and they are looking at digging out from a hole.
They do have 10 mil in space this year but I’m sure they want to save as much of that as possible because they have negative cap room next year.
All the more reason to capitalize on this year. They won't be able to keep that defense together with Yannick and Jalen looking to get paid. Their window is closing. It was propped open just a bit with Luck retiring.
it's not completely improbable. Minshew looked really good, but let's see how he does when a defense gameplans for him. If Eli knows NYG are moving on to DJ, I could see TC convincing him to move south.
So we are supposed to be fine with him making that kind of money and not remotely earning while losing for a decade all because he was on 2 sb winning teams before high definition was a thing?

Enough with the tired salary argument. Fans should be thankful that he didn't insist on a new contract when Ben was hired. I advocated for his own selfish interests to hold out. His contract at the time would have incurred too much of a dead cap hit to release him. There was no one capable to be the QB on the roster. He could have negated any attempt at trade. And a first year HC and a GM who knew he was on his last leg aren't negotiating from a position of strength. Eli should have demanded a new contract consuming some of Reese's $100M spending spree.
The rookie who replaced Foles looked better than Eli. I would be shocked if anybody traded for Eli and his contract. I've never seen an Eli trade is being realistic. To be worth anything he'd have to start winning and then the Giants wouldn't trade him.
This is almost too obvious. If Eli and Mara would really think about how the next few months are going to go down....
I don't envy either one, but the situation is what it is. Unless the Giants find a way to be semi-respectable over the next few months, the media circus is going to be unbearable for both parties.

The gameplan isn't going to change too much from Foles, they are very similar QBs.
unless a contender for a title has their qb go down for the year. Eli's contract is up this year. Anyone can sign him after the season and it will cost them nothing. The time to trade was before last spring. The time has passed.

I think the would trade him in a heartbeat. Can we trade him for a 6th, how would that look? until we actually starts winning I can't wrap my head around anyone offering anything for him.
Do I think it will happen? Not a chance, but it is a perfect match. Eli can pick up the offense in a week. The Jags are trying to win now and expecting Minshew to play that well again isn't fair to the kid. He looked great for a rookie but KC wasn't game planning for him. Once DC's have tape on him we will see a significant decline in performance.
If the Jags called the Giants would be foolish to not at least listen.
Andy Dalton is thoroughly average, but he looked much better than Eli has the last couple years. He was under constant pressure and still had a pretty good game. Eli would have completely folded in that situation. The defenders of the faith I am convinced do not watch other teams.
This is Eli's last year in the league, there is no where he can play at the money he'll be looking for. His defenders will say he wanted to retire a Giant and we'll all live happily ever after.
Don’t think the Jags would want him and don’t think he would go if they did.

Giants would certainly do it.
But the Jags just gave up a draft pick for an unknown backup - at least unknown to me - so I doubt it happens.
Plus, as someone said, their rookie played decent as far as the stat line.

You don't think journalists have used common colloquialisms of their respective eras for as long as journalism has existed?
We're just getting too old for those colloquialisms to be common for us anymore.

I understand. However, this particular one... Sliding into somebody's DM's and Tom Coughlin... Doesn't make a good match to me.

Well they have the future HOF and current superstar Gardner Minshew so maybe not.
