Discuss: moving Ogletree to outside EDGE LB

5BowlsSoon : 9/11/2019 9:07 am
Fansided had a great article on this recently and built a good case for such. First off, his PFF rating at ILB over the years has been less than mediocre.
Secondly, he stinks in pass coverage.
Thirdly, he is good at rushing the qb.

So maybe this can kill two birds with one stone. Get Connelly into a starting role and get a better Edge rush with a very athletic guy who seems lost where he is at and clearly is not efficient in that role.

Is Bettcher smart enough to even consider doing this? Is this a bad idea?

Ogletree is slow and doesn’t have the speed and fast twitch even mediocre Edge rushers have.

Neither do any of our edge rushers.
Moving outside makes a lot of sense...
BamaBlue : 9/11/2019 9:14 am : link
I mean, a lot of sense for the 2019 Giants. Can't think of a better way to exploit a lack of speed than to put a slow-poke in a position that requires speed and quickness. This is a new edge position, the 'edge of the cliff'
He's
Eric from BBI : Admin : 9/11/2019 9:14 am : link
not built like a 3-4 edge rusher. He can play outside in a 4-3 scheme, but not a 3-4.
Edge in a 3-4? No.
JonC : 9/11/2019 9:15 am : link
He's best suited to 4-3 WILL, that's where he's been most effective in the NFL. Less snap decision responsibility, less field to cover.

is a way better OLB. The 3/4 ER needs to be physical. Ogletree is not a physical LB.
I’d rather release him.

He stinks.

Doesn't make a whole lot of sense. He doesn't profile at all as a 3-4 EDGE/OLB. In a 4-3, yeah - you might be able to get away with him playing SAM, but in this particular scheme, moving him outside just further exploits his lack of speed. Unfortunately, he's got to stay @ ILB - it's the only spot we'll be able to get even average play from him... I hope.

+1

He doesn't seem particularly good at getting the D lined up correctly or communicating either and those are supposedly his strengths...
I don't think a scheme is the problem
larryflower37 : 9/11/2019 9:28 am : link
The Giants sent 6 and 7 last week and could not collapse the pocket.
We need personnel that can beat the man in front of them 1 on 1 and no one showed they could do that last week.
Olegtree being one of them.

I'm probably missing something
Csonka : 9/11/2019 9:40 am : link
but I don't see why Connelly gets so much love. Looks like a JAG to me.
I like the idea
cjac : 9/11/2019 9:41 am : link
of moving Ogletree to another team better than this idea
He should not
Dankbeerman : 9/11/2019 9:42 am : link
be blocking Connelly but that doesnt mean stick him on the edge. he could probably make some plays from the backside but doubt he can set an edge or rush the qb from the edge which is expected not a surprising blitz

I’m wondering what DG and Bettcher saw in him to warrant assuming his large contract and give up two draft picks? I have to assume Bettcher was all in on this since this was his defense he was starting up first year.

Did they both not see his limitations? Surely the tape was there to see them, right? How could two football brainiacs miss out on this?
after this year he's cut
Platos : 9/11/2019 9:59 am : link
lets get over it. he's all we got at the moment.
Edge LB's have to cover...
x meadowlander : 9/11/2019 10:04 am : link
...Strong side often has TE responsibility, Weak side often has the halfback.

Why does he suck so bad?

DG gave up a 4th round pick for this guy
Simms11 : 9/11/2019 10:06 am : link
to play in the middle of a 3-4. He showed that he can get turnovers, but very little else. I don't see the necessary physicality in the middle of a 3-4. I think we can obviously do better.
Connelly might be
JonC : 9/11/2019 10:07 am : link
our most instinctive and natural LB at the moment, he's showing well and learning fast. Not sure what else you expect from a rookie mid-round draft pick.
Rams dumping him
Marty866b : 9/11/2019 10:08 am : link
Should have told you all you need to know about Ogletree. A team with Super Bowl aspirations dumps a former first round pick in the prime of his career. The Rams found a sucker in the Giants GM.

This.. We then went ahead and moved his money to Guaranteed money.. so we couldn't cut him till at best next year..
Not a bad idea
Tuckrule : 9/11/2019 10:33 am : link
He’s our best blitzing linebacker from the inside
good news
LC_21 : 9/11/2019 10:39 am : link
this is our last year watching him ... and whatever number he decides to wear

I actually said to myself this past wknd - who's this terrible number 47 guy. Dunno how I missed the number change but he isn't worth anything near his cap hit next year and minimal dead money ( I know, I know - dead money is dead money ... )

he was a desperation flier and clearly isnt meeting expectations
This is why fifteen year olds don’t get hired as GMs
Vanzetti : 9/11/2019 10:41 am : link
Ogletree is completely unsuited for Edge. But some kid blogger gets the idea in his head and suddenly it’s represented as an “option.”

Lol, but they did make a valid point....Ogletree is rated by PFF as a less than to mediocre ILB so this isn’t working either. So do you keep a guy starting who is clearly inefficient and hurting the team? If not as a ILB, where else? I didn’t realize he is considered too slow to play OLB.

He'll probably get forklifted trying to set the edge.

His straight line speed isn't bad, but it wasn't like it was when he was at Georgia. And you're right he doesn't have the twitch, short area agility, and bend to be effective.
Then it looks like we are doomed this year
5BowlsSoon : 9/11/2019 11:38 am : link
The guy is a bum as ILB

The guy would be a bum playing OLB.

BUT APPARENTLY, he has to play!
