Giants biggest need? After Week 1

superspynyg : 9/11/2019 9:16 am
In the offseason? Either through FA or draft.

I’m going to ask this question a few times at different points in the season.everyomes serious opinion is wanted. There is no wrong answer.

This week is based on how you feel after this 1 game?

Mine...Edgerusher. Our biggest need is an elite pass rusher from the outside. Giving Dak all that time to make throws was terrible. I still believe the cbs will develop. It was Bakers 1st game.

Odd enough going into this game I would have said Elite WR.
I agree that ER is the biggest need.

I know the DB's struggled, but they're a young group just trying to get their feet wet. If Bethea continues to struggle, I hope they try Love at FS.

My 2nd would be LB, we need a sideline-to-sideline guy in the worst way.
No need to ask every week it will be the same
larryflower37 : 9/11/2019 9:20 am : link
Anyone to rush the QB.
They failed to address this in the off-season and it will kill them all year.
Pretty much the same as last year in terms of the D

1. ER
2. Pass covering LB
3. Safeties who can cover
4. Cb's who can cover

Not every week after week 4, 8, then last game

The secondary won't look this bad all year - there's a lot of inexperience and youth back there. I expected them to start slowly and struggle a bit. Maybe not quite as bad as what we saw Sunday - but they were probably going to struggle.

There's talent back there. They'll get better.

Edge rush is where we just have little to nothing. That should be every single person's answer right now to this question. We just don't have the horses there and we're going to have a really hard time trusting many guys in secondary on an island right now - so Bettcher is going to have a heck of a time trying to find ways to generate pressure.
A new Coach or Offensive Play Caller
Rudy5757 : 9/11/2019 9:24 am : link
The lack of use of our best player in a divisional game was the worst part of Sunday. He was on the field but we under utilized him, he is a threat to score any play. He was getting large chunks in the run game and should have been leaned on until he was stopped.

I agree on edge rusher but give it some time, Dallas has a great OL and our DC didn't exactly have creativity when rushing Dak.

Overall on O and D it was a poorly coached game. Way too many questionable calls on both sides of the ball. Our D was a mistake waiting to happen. Even if we rushed the passer there were guys open everywhere.
It's still Edge

they could use two starting caliber OLBs.

This is going to sound way to simple and probably is....
GiantBlue : 9/11/2019 9:41 am : link
but after watching the Saints-Texans on Monday Night....it dawned on me that while we have made improvements and our D really needs to improve a whole lot more.....we don't have that one intangible that could be a real difference maker.

A QB that puts the team on his back and wills his team to victory. I watched Brees basically overcome a great deal to make play after play to put his team in a position to win....to stay in the game when Houston was scoring TD's and to get Lutz in position to kick the FG.

Same with Houston. Deshaun Watson did everything to put his team on his back to get the victory and if not for a 58 yard kick, would have done it in an angry, loud stadium against the great Drew Brees.

Eli is okay....nice padded stats with the Cowboys mainly in prevent but eh.....he is not putting this team on his back to do whatever is necessary to win the game.

Will Jones? I don't know. It is a special power. Eli had it in the SB's and playoffs.....but I don't see it anymore. I see a guy wanting to play out his contract and get another one.

mavric : 9/11/2019 9:54 am : link
I have to agree that we need a high octane edge rusher - probably through free agency as a healthy veteran who is not in the twilight of his career would be most impactful. Hard to get - will cost much dollas

I think the backend of the defense will grow and become a strong point. The guys just need experience under their belt. I do think a high end safety is needed.

After that, I really want the Giants to continue to develop the o-line and get some depth behind the tackles. I have faith in the middle three, but worry if one of the ends go down

I disagree. They did address it though not adequately. They gave a below market prove-it deal to Golden who is 2 years removed from his ACL. A guy who is familiar with Bettcher's system and had proven production under it.

They also have expectations that Carter will take the next step. Young, talented, healthy and in his 2nd year, he should be expected to produce.

X-Man is the next man in the pipeline. Expectations won't be high, but he isn't some late round lottery pick. There should be some expectation that he shows he belongs.

BJ Hill also set the rookie sack record at 5.5. Certainly, it is expected that he builds on the production.

We certainly need a stud pass rusher. And while OV was the sack leader last year, let's not get confused that we lost some elite talent. The good news is that we'll be in position next draft to pick a stud or spend in FA (Yannick, please!).
We may learn that our current DB's (aside from Jack Rabbit)

are not fast enough to cover most receivers. If so, we have too glaring needs. ERs and DBs.

I don't think speed is the issue. Corey Ballentine especially will not have this problem when he gets more PT. Nor will Baker when he gets more experience.

It's not the track speed, it's the game speed.
The defense looked totally unprepared

so it difficult to get a clear read. Coaches need to do a much better job of getting players ready to play.

ER
Pass covering LB
Free Safety
Experience for the many young players
Dynamic edge guy is needed

Carter and Ximines have upside enough to cover on side but we need a no doubt about it stud on the other side.

Aslo an everydown ILB and OT.

LB

Edge but ILB is so crucial in this scheme too.

Safety is too. He had Tony Jefferson and Tyrann Mathieu balling out in the Cardinals defense. Where are those cover skills now?

I wonder why our WRs can't widely separate like Edelman, Thielin, Diggs, Allen... with their crazy body movement and route running. Even obj really didn't do it. Forget his name who said Cruz was the hardest receiver to cover with his basketball moves.
We need 2 edge rushers

Not just 1.

And we need someone at least as competent as Jackrabbit in the secondary. Or we're going nowhere.

they all suck, that’s why. OBJ was doubled and tripled. Cruz played with Nicks and Manningham- you couldn’t double all of them and you “can’t cover no option routes all day.”

It's not the track speed, it's the game speed.

If it's primarily game speed, I look forward to watching the young DBs improve as the season moves along.
Its been what it has for at least the last 4 years
Dinger : 9/11/2019 2:07 pm : link
Someone who can consistently pressure the QB or who attracts so much attention that someone else on the line can. This was my biggest disappointment on draft day when Jones name was announced. It was a little bit of a shock, as I don't pretend to know who the Giants will take, but when they had a couple of options at an edge rusher and they went QB. Kinda said 'we're gearing up for the future'. I'm ok with the Jones pick and it took me a day or two to understand where they were with it, but if you don't put pressure on the QB your team will not succeed. They brought in Vernon and he was average. We had JPP and he was above average when he wanted to be (and before he blew his hand off). Really we havent had a force there since Osi?

Improved defensive coaching and communication. Betcher has to start proving his reputation by quickly getting improved performance the next several games. His defense has been abysmal since his hire. No more excuses.

This 100%. He has no more excuses. These are all Bettcher Boys. While ultimately the performance is up to the individual players, the defense as a whole is all his. Bettcher should be on the hot seat. The end of each week shouldn't result in the opponent being voted offensive player of the week.

They were clearly confused on defense, like all preason, and when you are going against an offense that they have never seen before it looks exponentially worse. Personally, I am not hopeful, but I'm withholding judgement till Week 2.

Barkley will only finish with 15 or so touches because the game just made it that way, after a brilliant start. Shurmur will act like the 2nd offensive possession with us up 7-0 never happened.
