Are they kidding me with this? Looks like people are trying to create poster board material out of thin air. I don't those comments were derogatory at all.
“I can comment on what we thought of him,” Shurmur told New York reporters. “We thought he was a big, strong thrower, a guy that had a chance to be a starter in the NFL, and he has been for them. I think he’s made steady improvements. He’s a very strong-armed guy. He’s helped them win some big games already. Just like any young player, you see where he’ll make mistakes and then correct them.”
The implication being if Shurmur said anything other than ‘we thought Allen was the second coming of Marino, and we’re eternally damned bc we passed on drafting him’, he’s disrespecting Allen.
Don’t judge too harshly, there’s not much to report on up in Buffalo
where coaches are always overboard and talking UP the opponent. Even if they are facing a 1-12 team they go overboard talking about the things they do well. So it is interesting that with the follow up question that he wasn't more glowing.
Me personally i liked Josh Allen the best of the QB's that year. I liked his demeanor and ability to extend plays with his feet, but overall his competitiveness. His strong arm was a big plus and i really thought the incompletions were due to the talent around him. He did seem raw to me and the level of comp and the coaching he received worried me. But i didn't think that was as much of worry for the Giants because i thought he could sit behind Manning and learn.
there was a same piece on PFT and this last paragraph I found interesting and funny:
The Giants might not have been the only team that wasn’t enamored of Allen coming out of college, because of his accuracy issues. And it’s not like he’d have even been playing there, since they have a first-round quarterback who they do like who isn’t on the field for some reason. Shurmur on Allen as a prospect - ( New Window )

Did I mention I got my Daniel Jones Blue jersey in the mail yesterday. Now waiting on the White one.
Who couldn't see the reaction on BBI stretching from disrespected to annoyed if random coach X describes Daniel Jones in those terms next year?
The only reason it's a story is because coaches never answer questions like that. Personally, it's refreshing Shurmur was honest. The PFF article is basically about how surprising it is he was honest.
three or four compliments in the same response but the phrase "chance to be a starter" is a huge insult.
I think he dropped the "chance to" and upgraded him to starter.
If you think about it, calling someone a starter is a pretty big compliment. It means you are one of the 32 best in the world at that time at what you do.

I was trying to be sarcastic, it didn't really come through. I honestly don't see how anyone would take offense to what he said.
Buffalo had a deal worked out to trade down a couple of spots if DJ8 was available, Cicny wanted to jump Denver. Would have been a neat haul, they would have gotten a couple of early/mid round picks.
'had a deal worked out to trade down if DJ8 was available' Â
I thought that Buffalo warroom video definitively put the lie to the Giants 'reached' for Daniel Jones narrative. He wasn't getting out of the Top Ten.
but usually coaches go out of their way - sometimes too much so - to heap praise on the other team and their players. And that's obviously designed to avoid these situations.
So I think Shurmur went the wrong way here. Did he say anything outrageous and provocative? No. But he wasn't flattering either. I expect the Bills, and Allen, to use this as extra fuel for Sunday's game. The opposing coach is essentially saying Allen is really nothing special...
Again, that may or may not be true. But don't open up those can of worms. As someone above referenced, pull the Belichick and simply say Allen is a good player. He's dangerous on the move and it's going to be a challenge.
... a chip on his shoulder on behalf of Jones - and where the team drafted him. He seems to me to want the future to start sooner rather than later. For instance, having Eli roll out so often should prompt folks - including owners - to think Why? - and then maybe imagine What if? If my premise is correct that he's signaling indirectly but clearly that he'd like to start Jones soon ... I wonder what reaction it will elicit from the players?

Did he seed the plan last year when he rolled Eli out frequently then??

Is this a sleeper cell type ploy??
Don't know whether to give him that much credit ... he's apparently intent on going with the type of offense he likes, regardless of how well or poorly it suits his players. One player it does suit happens to be Jones.

For crissakes, this is Coaching 101.
I agree. When faced with the opportunity to do the perfectly normal thing, Shurmur seems to short circuit sometimes.
3rd and 1, run Penny. Under 2 minutes, throw a challenge flag. Soft ball question about opponent, spit out a backhanded compliment.

Shurmur's assessment was in fact less than glowing, and the article explains many teams were concerned about his completion percentage.
Seems like a pretty fair take on comments Shurmur made. What am I missing?
HOF potential being one, starter being another.
Does that ring a bell or am I making that up?
Every new QB has a chance to be a starter, there is no certainty even for the best prospects.
I hate to break it to you all, but Daniel Jones is not a sure thing to be a viable starter either. Many seem to think so after four pre season games
And Shurmur just repeated his same comment...which I assume was the implied shot that he wasn't giving him much credit.
A "whatever" type thing but he is the Head Coach...

Absolutely and when I read the way he answered the question I knew someone would make a big deal of it.
Because nobody is expecting Jones to play this weekend?
So tomorrow’s headline is McDermott afraid of Daniel Jones

then it would have come back and bite him in the ass when we play the Jets and Dolphins
"Shurmur not in love with Darnold as a prospect"
