Cowboys new OC Kellen Moore

Rick in Dallas : 9/13/2019 6:13 am
First let me say that I did not see the game as I was on vacation out of the country. Reading Sy’s review it was quite clear that we have multiple issues on defense.
During player interviews yesterday in Dallas, Amari Cooper mentioned that the Giants defense has a difficult time recognizing Moore’s schemes.
This is really important aspect as Giants had no game tape on Moore’s offense.
Was Bettcher preparing our Defense on Linehan’s offensive schemes?
Maybe with more game tape on Moore’s offensive schemes, opposing teams will be better prepared to play the Cowboys.
there is some truth to this

great article in the Athletic - Ted’s Film Room: Breaking down the Week 1 offense of the Cowboys, Ravens and Cardinals detailing some of what he was doing. Unfortunately, you need a paid account (which is worth it) to read it.

when you have WRs
hitdog42 : 9/13/2019 6:41 am : link
and a mobile QB, there is an infinite playbook to access... and put pressure on a defense.
in particular when you have a stud RB as well like the cowboys

Giants have the RB... but the defense feels no pressure outside of that.
There was a huge change in % of Play Action vs last year
Randy_Lahey : 9/13/2019 7:50 am : link
Quote:
Last season, per Pro Football Focus, Prescott used play action on 25.4% of his 680 dropbacks, a percentage that ranked 15th in the league. Using play action, Prescott completed 68.6% of his passes for 1,312 yards, 8.6 yards per attempt, seven touchdowns and two interceptions. Without play action, Prescott completed 66.9% of his passes for 3,065 yards, 7.0 yards per attempt, 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Prescott’s play action passer rating was 104.8; his passer rating without was 93.3.

Quote:
Against the Giants, Prescott used play action on 46.9% of his 32 dropbacks. Among starting quarterbacks in Week 1, only Lamar Jackson had a higher play action rate (50%), and Jackson was the only other quarterback in Week 1 to put up a perfect passer rating with at least 20 attempts. Three of his four touchdown passes came with play action, his yards per attempt went up from 11.6 to 13.8, and his passer rating went from 124.1 to 158.3. There are other factors that go into an explosive passing offense, of course, but the intelligent schematic use of play action is something you’ll see a lot of when discerning why Prescott was so effective last Sunday.

was not quite as polite as Cooper and IMO it speaks as much to Moore as it does Bettcher or the Giants db coach.

"They're all lost in the back there," says Cobb referring to the Giants DBs

If you simply lose to talent, you tip your hat, when you're not prepared and the other team is, you make changes or at least exert pressure IMO
It seemed obvious they went from a run first
BillT : 9/13/2019 8:04 am : link
To a pass first team against us. Even that alone would be enough to confuse the D.
Bad teams...

...always get bush-wacked by something new.

We're used to it.

Get used to it.

It’s speaks to coaching way more than talent in my opinion.

Actually said this week that the majority of the plays they ran were plays they have had for a while, Moore just put some window dressings on them. I don't think it's a major change from what was there in previous years.
The players were not following the scheme
justafan : 9/13/2019 9:17 am : link
because they were blowing coverage. No scheme in the world calls for blowing coverages. That is problem 1A and is luckily correctable. Problem 1B is this team cannot rush the passer, I find it unlikely we will see much improvement there, though there is a chance one of the young guys or Golden could emerge sometime this season.

Problem 2, is Betchers house blitzes were laughably bad. We sent the house and not a single guy got through. You send the house like that and there should be a Blitzer in the QBs face. At the very least, this should force a throw to the QBs hot read. That didn't happen. Dak sat there, laughed, looked to a guy running free and deep and let it rip.

Unfortunately all that you said is spot on.
The Cowboys
HoustonGiant : 9/13/2019 10:25 am : link
picked up every blitz mainly because our blitzers were right next to each other. Had they taken different gaps, etc, maybe they get through.

Also, BJ Hill is terrible, or at least he is against the Cowboys OL.
Greg Cosell was on The Herd the other day and was asked
shockeyisthebest8056 : 9/13/2019 11:07 am : link
if Dak or Kellen Moore deserved more credit for how the Cowboys' offense looked Sunday?

Cosell said neither. He said the Giants' defense was just flat out pathetic leaving receivers wide open and Dak made throws any NFL QB should be able to make.

arcarsenal : 9/13/2019 11:14 am : link
All of our blitzes looked horribly telegraphed. Hard counts were all Prescott needed to figure out who was coming and where they were coming from.

It was just bad all around. That stuff can't happen.
It's getting old
Mike from Ohio : 9/13/2019 11:31 am : link
reading quotes from other teams and reading articles about how badly prepared this team was for the game. This isn't new and goes back all the way to Coughlin's last few years.

This team is not loaded with talent, but that is only part of the reason it has been so consistently bad for the last few years. This has largely been a poorly prepared team.
NYG May have been expecting
Gregorio : 9/13/2019 12:34 pm : link
A more run oriented offense from Dallas, as they often have done with Prescott at QB. NYG had no answer for the aerial attack. To execute a change in strategy with success, you have to give credit to Dallas’ new OC.
That 3rd down designed QB draw
Coach Red Beaulieu : 9/13/2019 12:43 pm : link
was a clear indicator how badly telegraphed Butcher's blitzes were. Dak simply ran away from the overloaded side for a first down, hard to think of a more pathetic easy 3rd down with shitgrinning Garret and molestor Jerry jump hive fiving and chest bumping everyone in the pressbox.

I think it speaks to a lot of inexperience on a young defense.

They were telegraphed because Moore did a ton to draw them out.

Thanks, I certainly value what Cosell has to say.

It wasn't ground breaking stuff, but based on the Cowboys past they didn't do anything to prep for it. The issue is the Giants are having basic communication break downs as it is.
Who said it was

Groundbreaking? Fans that give their reviews of games with limited insight are a dime a dozen.
