98% of the time, a week 2 game would not be considered a "must win."
But when years of poor performance and inadequate starts to seasons begin to mount, as they have for Big Blue, the narrative changes, and the time to win quickly snowballs. Simply put, we need early wins. Football, like most sports, particularly for a younger team, is about confidence and believing. That time for belief and gaining confidence is right now. Not next week, three weeks, or three years. Now! At home, on our turf.
You know who says "it's a long year, it's only game two?" Fans of teams that suck. Plain and simple. It's akin to saying, "that putt in golf is only four feet, it doesn't count as much as that first drive." They all count. And if you start missing those four foot puts regularly in a match, you are doomed later on.
With that said, when a team like ours needs a crucial win, you look to your best player and say "it's time to carry us all." Be a hero.
Our best player, by a county mile is Saquon Barkley. He is to the Giants what Lebron was to Cleveland on some of their more depleted teams. He is THE guy right now.
Mix him into the run game hard, the pass game, every angle you can find. All timers have these games. MJ, Kobe, Montana, Brady, etc. It's time, right now. Not in three weeks, now. Let the kid be special. And as a fan, I believe in my heart he can be extraordinarily special. Let's go!
And tell me what the Giants see in Hamilton again?
I will concede, DG is far better at drafting than picking up free agents :
Bethea
All of the Arizona defensive players (thanks to Bettcher)
Stewart
Ogletree (I guess he was just a bad trade)
Stupar
Tanney
Rod Smith
I am sure that Shurmur currently plans to heavily feature Barkley. I am not sure that he's capable of sticking to that plan in the midst of a game.
He needs to grind out drives. He is a massive boom guy. We need a mix of him and Gallman eating clock
Danny Dickhead. Supertroll.

I don't think management agrees with this.
