NFT: Auto Mechanics Question - 2006 VW Beetle

JFIB : 9/13/2019 1:21 pm
Hi Gents, BBI seems to know it all so why not try here. The wife let her brother borrow her 2006 VW Beetle and in his eagerness to find reverse he forced it and it got stuck in gear. I thought for sure it was the shift linkage as I have had this problem in my VW's in my younger days. Mechanic (not the dealership) said it was a broken shifter cable and he should replaced a corroded clutch cable while he was in there. We pick the car up last night and 3rd gear is what you get when shifting into the normal position of 1st gear. While shifting then into 2nd, It feels like you get 4th gear when shifting from the new position of 3rd gear. I'm not a mechanic but we brought it back this morning and dropped it off and haven't heard anything back yet.

Those of you with more mechanical experience may be able to shed some light on this for me. Could this sort of thing happen and be corrected with some adjustment to the new cables or does this indicate a different issue? Any help would be appreciated as were not having much faith in the local mechanic at this point. Thanks!

Probably shift linkage. A gear shifter is not a complicated

piece of machinery, even though a transmission is a black box where magic happens.

In any case, this is 100% the person who fixed your car's responsibility. Don't let him tell you it was an existing issue.
The problem here is this means they didn't test their fix.

Any good mechanic will have a vehicle test driven before return to the customer, in order to prevent issues exactly like this.

After they fix it, which they should be obligated to do, I suggest finding a new mechanic for potential future work. I know this doesn't answer your direct question, but just trying to help.
Don't put blame on your wife's brother.

Her car is very old, and he was the unlucky person driving when the rusty old cable broke.
