wasn't happy with his at-bats so he shaved his mustache during the game. not off completely I don't think but did something he was superstitious about.
obviously multiple factors. Sure, starts w/ the pitcher. But the catcher calling the game, pitch framing, even just the splits for Thor (at various times w/ several pitchers, in spite of success w/ other teams)...all that factors & shows it's a thing. JDG's former agent even demanded a personal catcher last year for the same reason, now in a playoff race as GM refuses it (w/ the staff no doubt)?
Pitcher should be better, catcher should work at it (as Ramos has), but at THIS point in a playoff race you do what works, period
Ramos' bat surely changes things some, but it wasn't a huge deal to help your SP, vs Kershaw, vs the best NL if not MLB team, esp given the empirical evidence

the data and analytics support Syndergaard, in the most important series of the year, you don't show one of your best pitchers who the boss is and stick with him the lesser catcher (for him). and Ramos has to get a day off a week at least, why not do the smart thing and make it his start.

Noah with Ramos tonight:
5 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 1 HR, 4 K.
The two now own a 5.20 ERA together.
May be time to get him back with Nido next Wednesday in Colorado.

Syndergaard is a bit more reluctant to throw slider to Ramos bc Ramos receives the high pitch better than low. Nido the opposite. Thus, better fit.
Callaway says a key to success tonight is NS has to forget about who is receiving and not change the game plan/pitch selection.
Might have lost anyway but you dont know shit about your own players. AVILAN IS A FUCKING LOOGY. When they go to a right-handed hitter that mashes lefties..., TAKE HIM OUT.
Totally outclassed and outsmarted every single night.
formula based numbers, probably like WAR or wRC+ etc
But RHB / LHB splits are simple stats, very close to numerical values added to the 'eye test.'
Meaning truly basic baseball decisions. Don't even have to go as far as his 85% analytics comment because if he doesn't get the simple stuff, how could he possibly understand the new age numbers, much less how to use them in game

Greg Maddox didn’t pitch to Javy Lopez
Timmy to Buster Posey
AJ to Posada
And Posey is a very good defensive catcher. But some guys just don’t work well together.
Also, note Bochy and Girardi and Cox had no problem with designating a catcher to work with a particular pitcher. Think those 3 are slightly better
Managers than the Mouse. And two of them
Are ex catchers
If that's how it goes down, will be getting rid of Mickey.
Where's the urgency? Ive been saying this for weeks. Dodgers have their best possible lineup against Thor. Us? Resting Alonso. Nimmo is on the bench even though he has better numbers against lefties than many in the lineup.
Syndergaard pitches better with Nido but they spite him to prove a point.
7th inning in a 3 run game and he feels he can get Avilan through a righty that mashes lefties with a fully rested and full pen.
15 games left and playing the best team in baseball and we are just easy peasy lax.
You bench Alonso angst a LHP! you don’t allow Thor to have his catcher Â

yes, even worse than the Cano/Kelenic/Diaz deal. The guy is a complete joke. Baseball managers aren't a prominent position but incompetence is incompetence and an incompetent leader can rarely be overcome. His presence is a massive fuck you to every sentient organism within a mile of that clubhouse.
keeping Mickey is example #1 why brodies theory of managing up won't work and a warning of future failures if he isn't willing to stand up to Jeff.
First off, one of the things that’s not been made public (as far as I know) is what exactly is the problem with Ramos specifically?
Is it pitch framing? Game calling? Blocking balls in the dirt causing him to leave more up? Maybe if a specific problem is identified, it can be resolved? I dunno.
Whatever issues deGrom had earlier in the year seem to have been worked out regardless of who is catching. Is the same not attainable for Thor? It also can’t be understated how important Ramos is in this lineup 2nd half of the season. It’s a big deal to take his bat out of the lineup in very important games.
Finally, I tend to side with credible opinions in these situations and both Darling and Keith (especially Darling) believe it is incumbent on the pitcher to work it out with the catcher. I’m not against Thor but I guess I’m just asking very specifically what is the problem? Has it been worked on? Or is he just walking upstairs to the office and trying to have the situation handled by management? deGrom seems to have figured this out, why can’t Thor?
Thor just needs to grow up, I noticed that Stroman's best performance as a Met happened with Nido catching. So, maybe it's not just an issue for Thor, but for the entire pitching staff.
Much better with Nido. Look it’s not rocket science. We all know Ramos is a bad defensive catcher. It should be no shock Syndergaard likes Nido more. They did show a graph last night that showed that because Ramos is such a big dude, all of Syndergaards pitches are up more. It’s a real thing.
Does Ramos's work behind the plate affect other pitcher's performance? Â
I’m doing a little survey of the games Diaz has pitched a perfect inning since the All Star break – no walks and no hits. I’m going to list those innings and who the catcher was.
Sept 8 – Ramos
Aug 30 – Rivera
Aug 28 – Ramos
Aug 23 – Nido
Aug 18 – Nido (Ramos was dh)
July 21 – Ramos
Please feel free to check my work. I didn’t. If my numbers are right, Ramos caught half of those games and we know that he catches more than half of the Mets games. Coincidence? Maybe.
Ramos specifically has trouble with low balls - so yes Â
he could be part of the issue for Diaz slider too, but that's kind of like nitpicking the color of the drapes when the house is on fire. Diaz issues go way beyond that.
getting sick of hearing how Thor needs to "shut up & play" Â
or "grow up", he didn't announce his desire to have Nido catch him publicly to create a stir.
He did it internally and confided to his manager to enhance his teams chances to win and some Mets insider douche slipped it out to the media and now here we are.
It was mentioned last night the reasoning for all of this is Ramos having difficulties catching Thor's slider which noticeably was not in use last night.
weren’t willing to spend enough for us to sign Grandal. He’s a good defender and hitter. If the Brewers beat us out for a wild card, Grandal is the difference
I understand that not every pitcher can have a personal catcher. But the analytics don’t lie. It’s a problem. Plus it was known that he was a poor defensive catcher. Why neutralize your strength (starting pitching) which a poor defensive catcher?
So what is the reason that you forced Ramos on Noah when it was clearly an issue? Don’t tell me it’s for his offense. Sitting both Alonso and Ramos blows that excuse out of the water. IMO, this was a personal, petty decision which of course blew up in their faces...like everything else. Noah’s private conversation being leaked to the media just confirms it for me.
The idea is to put your players and team in a position to succeed. The Mets do the opposite. Always have. The Dodgers are the best team in baseball, have the division locked up and still have their “A” lineup out their versus the Mets. While we are choosing to rest players LOL.
This team is a joke.
Some pitchers just work better with certain catchers Â
I think it is more psychological than related to pitch framing. It is about the pitchers confidence
And pitchers having favorite catchers goes way back. Carlton only pitched to Tim McCarver and when he went to the Phillies, he made them trade for McCarver
Who leaked this? I doubt it was the agent or Thor. So sounds like the Mets trying to make Thor look bad. Either that or they just have leaks, which falls on the GM
TY for the ERA splits. Yeah that's a good point too - Â
what was actually said. If you read at least the ESPN article, Thor was NOT trashing Ramos but citing the results - the overall performance. Honestly at this point for a pro team to ignore it (or worse, refuse it after giving JDG a personal catcher on his way to a CY Young...), both a shitty look & a dumb strategy. Aside from the leaks but well
I get that everyone needs to work on this. But not mid playoff race. Other thing is you short leash Nido if you do start him - once you're down enough, be ready to PH him early (backup catcher issue notwithstanding)
It's like finding a bat that works best for you & bumps your BA, but in arrogant view of "i am / should be a great hitter" you use the other bat - in your biggest stretch of games no less
Mgmt is far from just Xs & Os but reading players & situations. There's a whole slew of mgrs who don't get this even at the top. Like poker, you HAVE to know the numbers like it or not (Xs & Os). But if you can't read situations & people and apply it with those stats in game, it's nothing but luck in terms of getting better & winning consistently...
the years - Beltran, Turner, Murphy, on and on. Meanwhile the guys he's been close with like Reyes/Omar get lifetime contracts and roles no other team would give them.
Who pushed for the Cano deal? Jeff. Who pushed to hire Callaway and then backed him in June? Jeff. Who doesn't ever talk to the media when things are down? Jeff. Who has gotten criticized most frequently by executives in high level ownership discussions from Doubleday to Einhorn? Jeff.
Syndergaard is outspoken, there have been rumors he's rubbed "some in the org" the wrong way, he's been in trade discussions for more than a year, and now this year things have leaked out to make him look bad. I'm not a conspiracy theorist but I am inclined to agree with Psi that this is the mets shooting themselves in the foot to spite Syndergaard bc he doesn't toe the party line and if I was taking a guess as to where the shots were fired from it would be the owner's box.
He is only likely to get two ABs. If he gets more, it likely means Thor is dominating .
Nido hits lefties ok. And with expended rosters, you can use Ramos stratgicallynas a pinch hitter and then leave him in the game. That way Ramos is guaranteed to hit in a crucial situation and Thor gets his preferred catcher
RE: I will own up to my BIG words from yesterday Â
I wouldn’t sit him but I can see why
He is sitting
If you want to beat Dodgers, you need to shut down their bi LH bats: Bellinger, Muncy, Joc and Seager
Yea, let's see how things look after this weekend.
5 runs in bottom of the first for the cubs lol. Mets are going to have to finish like 13-4 to take this.
One step at a time. Win tonight and have a chance to take the series with DeGrom tomorrow night.

Haha, yep. Wind is blowing straight out at Wrigley today, so it may be one of the 15-12 type games...
But yeah - they need to take care of business first, then see who else wins/loses...
Joc Pederson – RF
Max Muncy – 1B
Matt Beaty – 3B
Cody Bellinger – CF
Corey Seager – SS
A.J. Pollock – LF
Gavin Lux – 2B
Will Smith – C
Clayton Kershaw – LHP
now 4 run inning so far
Maybe it was just psychological. But who cares. It’s s goddam pennant race
I
+1. I have to agree.
