the Giants actually traded for a former Pro Bowl LB, Al Wilson, from the Broncos. Wilson failed his physical with a neck injury, which ultimately killed the trade and sent Wilson back to the Broncos. The Giants signed Mitchell as a result and it all worked out better.
Fun fact, Wilson would sue the Broncos for the money that the Giants had planned to pay him in an extension for misdiagnosing the severity of his neck injury. The lawsuit would eventually get dismissed.

And wasn’t the player going to Denver a certain DL named Justin Tuck?
Mitchell was lightening in a bottle that year, and then signed a pretty big deal with Buffalo for the time. The Giants defense didn't skip a beat with Danny Clark the next year, and Mitchell had an up and down tenure with the Bills.
I believe it was the poster Yankees28 who was a big proponent of Mitchell when he was UFA in KC.
in Washington on the second to last play of the game in week 3. Decided to go and watch the highlights. Memories. Link - ( New Window )
During that goal line stand, Washington's big time running back, Clinton Portis was on the sideline. Can you IMAGINE not using your star running back in a big spot.....
A coincidence that Giants defense looks pretty much the same year after year. Giants last regime did not value this position and left the cupboard bare

Maybe some of us don't remember how poor that defense looked in weeks 1 & 2 in 2007...

Tuck wasn't part of that trade. It was for a draft pick (I think a 3rd). You might be thinking of the Eli trade when the Chargers wanted Osi, but Accorsi wouldn't budge.

Are you sure? Could have sworn it was a player swap.
I googled this and it seems that Tuck was mentioned but it was unfounded
"Ran off" for the money and regretted it (Jacobs, Manningham) etc.
In a shocking turn of events, Manny has no fucking idea what he's talking about... Jacobs signed a 1 yr, $1.575M deal with the 49ers after the Giants released him - hardly the type of contract that would qualify as "'ran off' for the money."

... has ever been used in the history of the universe before so thanks for that.
I'm saying the Giants defense didn't suffer for Mitchell leaving. The 2008 Giants defense was demonstrably better than the 2007 Giants, even if the results weren't as good.

I remember. But The Giants team of 05 and 06 had been decent so I remember still thinking Giants could be relevant at 0-2

It was the start of bad decisions on his part IMO
Ground Zero for 'Im The Smartest Guy in the Room'
Not making this a Reese bashing thread...just how I felt at the time...and still do

He didn’t do much in Buffalo.
Plus, they signed Danny Clark to do the same thing

But he just clicked with the Giants defense
Same year - One of the two best plays I've seen a Giants player accomplish ...
Against the Eagles. Sacks the QB, as the ball is bouncing off the ground, does baseball slide ...
Hops up with the ball and runs for a TD.
In the Super Bowl, played the best game of his life. Then he went to "Siberia" (the Bills) for the $$$, end-of-story.
"Ran off" for the money and regretted it (Jacobs, Manningham) etc.
Uh huh. Seems to be glossed over in this post though.
That was the play I was thinking of .... if he doesn't make that play we start out 0-3 instead 1-2.
Single-handedly turned the season around for us.
Of course I am kidding but, that was a clutch play when we needed it.
Clark was almost as bad as Barrett Green

Oh wait.... skip that one.

Wasn't Green the LB that got hurt in like his first game and never played again.

You don't know if they regretted it.
It is quite possible that the money they "ran off" for set them, and their families, up for life.

He got hurt in the 2nd game vs. Washington returning a TD and was never the same.

Ironically, DG has proven to be a savvy drafter in his two drafts here as GM, but his veteran free agent signings have been much more mediocre.

Absolutely, Ironically we were fearing the opposite when he was hired.

Perhaps exploring the available pool of players beyond ex Panthers and ex Cardinals would help in that regard.

No. Just... no.
