Just wondering if, being down our top two WRs, if it’s better to just forgo Engram at TE for a game, use him almost exclusively in the passing game, and let Ellison take the lion’s share of snaps at TE to support Barkley.
Crazy? Obvious? You tell me.
See the bold. Should that be the primary method of attack? We don’t have anyone else who can consistently catch the football and create mismatches in the secondary at the moment.
He had a great block on Barkley's big run on the first drive.
It's been discussed about Engram at WR and he isn't a great mismatch there but when you get bigger players against him on the outside, that is the biggest match up issue. We need to get into these sets more.
Example of one I'd like to see. 2 tight and fullback. Bills may counter with a larger package. Shift out into a formation with both Barkley and Engram on the outside which should be a mismatch. However, you are in a 1-1 set. You can give it to Penny who is lined up as the running back. You can also go max protect with Penny and Ellison and look for the mismatch. Another play you can run here is a jet sweep (handoff or just play action) with Barkley as he goes in motion. If an actual play, you have Engram on the play side blocking someone probably smaller in space.
I doubt you would define Engram as a WR unless you have three traditional TEs on the field at the same time - even though his route might be more of a WR route. The fact is he sometimes splits out wide and sometimes plays in close. It seems like it is all labels and not play design. It is about creating and exploiting mismatches.
I mean you can try it as a wrinkle to give the D another look but that is about it
More likely they run more two TE sets
That seems to be the theme, these days.
Hopefully, things will improve, soon.

He played wr his rookie year when the injuries hit and split time there in college.
Even though he doesn't even have to trick them, they cant catch up to his speed
I do think critical to this offense that he continues to improve his blocking and Ellison's route running/pass catching. Playing a dynamic 2-TE set is absolutely what they need with a crappy WR core.
Not this week. Bills have Edmunds.
