AMC theaters showing out-of-market NFL games

shyster : 9/14/2019 10:51 am
Saw a post on this on Bills' board. Haven't noticed it here.

AMC theaters showing select out-of-market NFL games on the big screen. Link says "stunning detail", so I guess that means HD.

No admit charge as such but you have to buy a $10 pre-paid food/drink ticket.

This week, BUF-NYG will be showing at an AMC in the following 12 cities (out of 50+ total):

Atlanta
Boston
Charlotte
Chicago
Cincy
Cleveland
Dallas
Houston
Los Angeles
Orlando
Tampa
DC/Tysons Corner

Can’t say I’d ever do that

but it’s interesting. If they found a way to IMAX it that would be a pretty cool experience.
Since the movie industry is absolutely in the toilet

theaters have to do something to find customers.

Superhero flicks and a whole lot of nothing else these days...
My Guess is that the NFL will shut this down

"No Admission/Food Drink ONLY $10" is a clear attempt to show this game outside of the NFL's "Rebroadcast and Retransmission blahblahblah...." licensing rights

Not really. Bars do it through DirecTV and Sunday ticket. I don't see why a movie theater couldn't do it (as long as the NFL gets a piece of the pie). I think it's a creative idea and might work for the movie theaters. Like Uconn said, if they ever did it in IMAX...That would be a cool experience

I highly doubt a company as large as AMC didn't get legal clearance before promoting this.
I can't imagine AMC is doing this without

an agreement with the NFL.

There are several business articles on the subject. Link is to a Yahoo finance article from August, when the AMC CEO tipped the concept in an earnings call with analysts. CEO mentioned that AMC "hoped and expected" to be able to show live games from one of the major sports leagues.

The article's author correctly guessed it would be the NFL.

Article quotes CEO as saying that, if this works, more live sports programming will be coming to theaters.

Damn, I would absolutely do that!

That is, if San Francisco were on the list, and if suffering through a Giants game were worth the money and hassle.
Thanks for the heads up

I'm going to try it out.
not sure i'd like that
Jints in Carolina : 9/14/2019 12:37 pm : link
but it's a cool idea for others.
CBS has the Patriots on in Ct

The north central part anyway. First thing I checked when the schedules came out. Can't get the NFL ticket where I'm at, so I can either subscribe to a CBS stream or hang out in a sports bar. It's kind of funny all the so called die hard Patriots' fans I come across who say they have been Pats fans their whole lives. So I tell them how I use to get good tickets the week of the game in the early 90's when I was working 5 minutes from the stadium in Foxboro. I say 'You know, when MacPhearson was coach'. They just give me this dumb look,'huh'?
I’ll let you know

You're very welcome BB (and same to RickInCharlotte).

And absolutely give us a report. My local AMC doesn't have Giants this week, but they are listed as participating in the program and I suspect I will get the opportunity.
I wouldn't go often
ChaChing : 9/14/2019 6:19 pm : link
but could see it for a game or playoff party

Add the newer family style, byob if not full bar, couches & recliners w/ service in theaters to a game...why not?

Obviously you might have to rent it out, if not just have enough people in your group

Dunno if it's a viable long term business tho
Well we all know

The game sucked, but watching on a movie screen was definitely cool. There wasn’t much of a turnout, 11 people! Although I liked it I will try to find a Giants bar for the next game.

How much they charge?

ChaChing : 9/15/2019 9:16 pm : link
didn't see in OP it was free
Free

Just required to buy 10$ of food. Have to be a stub member which is free, then they just bang you for the food. Pretty decent menu, cheaper than some bars I’ve been to
