How the Mighty Have Fallen

PhilSimms15 : 9/14/2019 9:42 pm
Reading this article from The Athletic drives home how sorry the Giants franchise has been for too many years.

The reporter basically asked players in the division which team they liked least and which stadium was their least favorite to play in.

Almost universally, players from other teams prefer playing the Giants and playing in Giant Stadium.

Where have you gone LT, Michael S, Jesse A, Carl, DD, Snee, Bradshaw, Jacobs, Harry Carson, Osi, Jimmy Burt, Bavaro. . . .guys who made sure the Skins, cowboys, and Iggles left Giants Stadium bruised and beat up.

I have to yell at fans in the 100’s section to get loud. Been that way since 07. I hadn’t been before then. The stadium is not a raucous stadium and the fans don’t heckle that much because the lower bowl is predominantly wealthy and old people. Sorry if I offended any 100’s section season ticket holders here, I’m not talking about you but the vast majority.

coughlin had a good run between 05-11. Parcells was 84-90, not
much longer. And the giants have probably made as many championship games as any franchise out there. Really all teams go through droughts.

They’ve never lost a conference Championship In the Super Bowl era. Made it to five and won them all.

The one and only playoff game held at MetLife and it was loud. The Giants haven’t really given the Giants much to cheer about and have been bad for the better part of a decade (although the staunch defenders of the status quo on BBI would have you believe otherwise). If the Giants turn into a consistent winner with DJ being a star and Barkley being a player that strikes fear into opposing d coordinators, with a mean offensive line and a fierce pash rush the stadium will be loud.

Until that point its going to be a skepticism and cautious - not overwhelming- optimism because the product has been so bad. Let’s see the results.

You're 10 years older than I am so you experienced the 70s more than me. But I will say that from 1980 to 2012 the Giants didn't have more than two consecutive losing seasons. So while some years were mediocre, for 30+ years the Giants were never bleak.

SteelGiant : 9/14/2019 10:42 pm : link
All that matters is what Giants Fans think. In the last 20 years, which represents most the years of an active player's life today, Philly won 2017, Giants won in 2011 and 2007.

As a 39 year old fan, I consider that being better than the competition. We are rebuilding, what have the cowboys been doing for the last 20 years? They have lead the division a couple years with nothing to show for it.

How the mighty have fallen - Cowboys have not won since 1995 and Redskins have not won since 1991.

Giants have won a Super Bowl in every decade I have been alive. I will take a Super Bowl win every 10 years for the rest of my life.

Which is a good case for Jones starting now. This team needs a shot of energy and excitement. The argument that Eli is not the problem might be correct. But he hasn’t proven to be the solution and the status quo seems stale.

Since 11 this team has been built with a philosophy of ,”Let s retool” it s been a flawed strategy. I believe in big part that plan has been motivated by having Eli at quarterback.

Gettleman however has committed to a “rebuild”, except at quarterback. I just think when that happens you will see a new energy and excitement among the fan base.

Of course that could happen with Eli if the Giants play themselves into contention, but that seems unlikely at this pt.

This isn’t about franchise history

We are awful no matter what criterion you use- look them up - we are bottom feeder
Wins?
Playoff wins?
Draft stats?
Bungled coaching and management decisions?

Many of us know it - others act as if we are the patriots and can
Sign top flight players for a bargain - kick the tires - pick and choose

All equal nobody coming here
We have to pay more or pay longer for good players
Hence - the crap we have signed and cut- just embarrassing

The draft has to be red hot for us
There is some hope from our young team
A couple more drafts
The inevitable QB change
The JR stink goes away
The disgrace of TCs handling
Mara goes silent

The stadium is a piece of shit
Not sure what idiots- oh wait a minute - yes i do -

I know awful and great-53 years of being there - I’m 61-

To this fan, ownership appears only to be going through the motions. They can count on a sellout and brisk merchandise sales so why make more of an effort?

The old regime would look at a half filled stadium and hear the boos and try to make an effort to change things but this group is like the CBS owners of the Yankees. Their actions have made it clear that they really don't care.
When was the last time this team's defense scared anyone? Where are the junkyard dogs?

It's like they're thumbing their noses at the fans.

The Giants are following a similar path as the Redskins, minus the obscene, high-profile free agent signings. Expect more of the same.

...from a string of really bad Drafts, injuries, to the hiring of uninspiring coaches, the Giants just suck.

It looks like our offense will be pretty good this season, but the team is going nowhere fast with this defense.

The team's biggest problem IMO (outside their Head Coach): by the time this franchise fixes its defense, the offensive line may have aged out.
The article does not come as a surprise to most.
Affirmation : 9/15/2019 7:33 am : link
This team has not been a one to be feared for a while and unfortunately that stems mainly from how it has been managed from both the top to the bottom. As for the stadium, I personally was never a fan of sharing with another team and feel this franchise is big enough and worthy to have a place of our own to call home. It's still early into our tenure at our current stadium but I would not be opposed to moving at some point before the other team decides to do so before us.

short lease : 9/15/2019 7:57 am : link
The fans used to go to the games and instead of going inside they used to start fires in the trash cans and burn their tickets. One guy rented a plane that pulled a banner over the stadium that said something like "15 years of lousy football. Enough!"

It got so bad between the nephew (Tim) and the uncle (Wellington) they could not be in the same room together and they were co-owners of the team. Finally Rozelle reminded them that they were in the biggest media market in the US and the Football team was a travesty. He made them hire a real GM.

Of course I want it to get better but, this ain't so bad. How would you like to be a Jet's fan or a Dolphin's fan?

Something else that I've noticed about
eclipz928 : 9/15/2019 8:38 am : link
fans in the stadium is that there seems to be a lack of awareness of the situation on the field - specifically crowd noise will actually go UP with the Giants on offense on a critical down. It's weird to feel embarrassment for both too little crowd noise by the fans and too much of it over the course of a single game.

That game was an outlier for a few reasons. It was on national TV for homefield advantage. It was a night game during the holidays, so you had a bunch of college kids and people who had the next day off.

It also one of the coldest games in recent memory - alcohol was almost a necessity because hot chocolate / coffee was freezing. Hence people were ready to rock and roll.

I think a lot of teams not named the Pats would take that.

It all About Ownership and Management, Unfortunately
varco : 9/15/2019 9:10 am : link
The Giants are a franchise which, unfortunately, finds it difficult to sustain progress and on-field competitiveness. They seemingly can't build momentum off success - example is that they usually slump the year after reaching the ultimate prize. The George Young / Bill Parcells era was out of the norm. A team which suffers long droughts can only point to ownership and the decisions made by management in terms of hires (GM, scouts, coaches). It just is what it is. Fortunately, they have given us the thrills of winning Super Bowls, which keeps us all coming back year after year. I'm not as down on this team --I believe they are on a positive track but it will be a while before the defense gels (need playmakers). The offense is ahead in terms of progress and Jones is a hope for the future. They are definitely NOT the Yankees, Patriots or similar teams which perennially win and contend. More like the Mets, who occasionally "flash", then fade. Keep the faith ---we are the upswing but it will be uneven and have some rough patches. Until Ownership and management changes, it will always be up and then down, down, etc. The Maras and Tisches are essentially good people and try their best, but they are not in the same category as the top tier of sports owners.

The 2019 Giants defense may be worse than the 1966 defense. It is literally unfathomable that in 2019 with the draft and free agency that a NFL team can have 11 guys guys on defense this slow and this soft. It's probable that the Giants don't have 1 defensive player that is top 15 at his position in the NFL. Not. One.
