Point of clarification for coach bettcher....

thrunthrublue : 9/15/2019 2:01 am
It is completely legal for giants defenders to attack, rush, hurry and even knock down opposing quarterbacks and the passes they are throwing, on all the plays their qb has the ball. Also, it is well within the 2019 rules for the giants secondary to disrupt, harass, contest the passes being thrown to opposing receivers. I mention this only because none of those defensive plays happened in the first game, as a suggestion to try a new approach, for game two.

you can only play the guys you got.

the team gave away 2 of their best pash rushers, jpp and vernon, and replaced them with good athletes that cant pass rush.

i dont care what pff says about coverage vs pass rush. What matters is that you have a scheme that works (look at chicago and them playing offball in secondary and getting great pass rush from front 4) or being really good at coverage (see jax) or being really good at pass rush (see LAR).

giants have none of those phases. the entire OLB/EDGE group is a bunch of guys who would play 5 snaps on any other top 10 defense. WE're playing them for 40 snaps a game.

getting a bunch of cover corners is cute. but the defense has no balance. covering means nothing if u cant even get an average pass rush.

No more excuses. These are the players that Bettcher wanted. The only remnants are Jenkins and Tomlinson. The rest are Bettcher Boys. While we have some youth who were introduced to their first NFL game, the majority have played and produced before. No one should confuse the Bettcher Boys with the '85 Bears, but to retain the title as one of the worst defenses in the league should cost Bettcher his job. He is on the clock. Coach this squad up or pack his bags.
Yes I'm still waiting for that aggressive attack the QB style

of D he coaches according to the players description and how they love it.
Bettcher gets his mail

here?
Arizona’s D wasn’t any better under Bettcher than it was under Bowles.

The big difference between the 2014 and 2015 Cardinals was a healthy Carson Palmer. The defense continued to revolve around Calais Campbell’s incredible disruption up front. The pass-rush specialists under Bettcher - Chandler Jones, Markus Golden, etc. - enjoyed a huge edge because of Campbell. If Dexter Lawrence can play that role for the Giants, maybe we’ll see some production from the edge guys, including the post-surgical version of Golden. They still have to win one-on-one matchups though. Bettcher can’t send Peppers and Connelly after the QB on every passing down.
Let's see Dex on the weak side edge

In addition, whereas one gapping and mixing stuff up may leave you less run D soundness, sometimes you gotta generate that pass rush.
Ironically we see Ed Oliver today

I believe.
What I want to see is our defenisve players in the right positions to

make plays. At least then I know our DC has a clue as to what we need to do. Last game we weren't even in the area code sometimes, I put that on coaching. If we are there, and then get beat or lose 1-on-1 matchups, then I put that on the players.

IMO our coach still has a lot to prove

Good points. I don’t think Lawrence is ready for prime time yet however. He’ll get there IMO. He’s getting doubled now and has to learn how to fight through that at this level too. Additionally, C Campbell took a few years to develop IIRC as well. I think Bettcher might have to blitz more, which will obviously leave us vulnerable in the secondary, but against a young inexperienced QB like Allen, I think it’ll cause him to throw the ball up for grabs or force him into errors.

Especially those brilliant FS blitzes from 15 yards in the backfield.

+1 Their blitzes seem obvious to the people in the cheap seats they take so long to get there!
