The article also talked about how Buffalo was the best down field pass defense in the league. They’re not allowing *anybody* 20 yard passes down the field.
Safest bet today is the over on snide “Captain Checkdown” comments in the Game Discussion thread.
Well outside of one play where he got sucked in on play action
And right after he let up that embarrassing TD, he then held the TE on the next series which helped extend Dallas' drive. On a normal team with a half-way decent group of LBers, Tae David would be a back-up, and that assumes he made the team.
"Still going to be growing pains for all these young guys I expect, but glad they’re getting their shot"
W-L is probably going to be bad this year. What will make this a truly disappointing year is if the youngsters don't progress and become a core for next year.

Yup! I've been trying to tell Giants fans this for months now. It's not about this year it's about 2020. We need Barkley, Engram, Hernandez, Zo, Hill, Tomlinson, Lawrence, Connelly, Ximines, Baker, Beal, Love, Ballantine & Peppers to develop and show they can be core members of this team.
Connelly has shown decent instincts and the ability to get there and make tackles. He’ll have growing pains still and the experience he gains this year willl be invaluable. Hopefully he shows enough this year to be counted on as a nice piece to the defense going forward. Giants still need more dynamic LBers however, especially on the outside.
For all the talk about the ‘Kansas City Plan’... Â
... I think the 2019 Giants are much closer to the 2016 Rams than the 2017 Chiefs. Reid was able to field a winning team (and keep his job) in a transition year, despite Smith’s limitations and a porous defense. Fisher couldn’t do either. Like Shurmur, he had his rookie “QB of the future” and a marquee RB in his second year; but there were simply too many holes left to fill and too many vets hanging around for a last paycheck. Ironically, Alec Ogletree embodies the stopgap mediocrity of both defenses.
Can Shurmur survive the dark days of the turnaround? My guess is that he’s safe through 2020, because I think Gettleman and Mara know the 2017 Giants needed a gut rehab, not a quick fix. Working players like Connelly and Baker into the lineup should move that process along. The initial results might be ugly, but the new kids can’t be much worse than their predecessors.

Can Shurmur survive the dark days of the turnaround? Four wins or less this season and I believe Shurmur and his staff will be gone.
Connelly will shine today. He will excel against teams without big workhorse type RB's. I'm guessing somewhere along the lines of 5 tackles 1tfl and 1 big play if they're smart enough to keep him on the field
but just based on the eye test last week without knowing assignments etc I think I'd rather him replace Ogeltree.
It's harder to replace Ogletree with Connelly because Ogletree is the communicator and the one getting the calls from the sideline. I think that's too much to put on Connelly's plate this early.
If Ogletree continues to struggle or play poorly, it could be an option as Connelly gets more PT and is more comfortable.
that kind of projection inevitably recalls the 1990 draft, old Felt Forum, when Giants selected Mike Fox, DT from WVa in the 2nd. A 'knowledgeable' fan screamed out for all to hear:
<<Pencil him in for the next ten years!!>> He was cut within a year or two.
but just based on the eye test last week without knowing assignments etc I think I'd rather him replace Ogeltree.
Communication, was a huge issue last week, with this D. Break out the college Q cards, for this D. lol

Shockingly, he lasted 9 years in the NFL, 5 with the Giants.

I get it - we were a mess last week and the communication was awful. I just don't know if it's realistic to expect them to bench Ogletree after one week. You can only be so reactionary... you've got to give some things a little time to work themselves out. If we keep yanking and replacing guys every other week, the defense will never get on the same page.
If they want to see more Connelly, it made more sense to have him play over Davis. At least for the time being. If Ogletree continues to be a problem and the defense is having communication issues that aren't resolving, then they definitely will need to look at the alternatives.
if he hung on for 5, I should have searched his career stats ):
I don't have game-to-game recall of individual plays that stand out (with notable exceptions, like LT, Sehorn, Amani, Plax, Eli, OBJ, etc.) like some here do, like Sy, but, sheesh, I recall no plays of note from him.
Greg Mark didn’t even make the team after the Giants took him in The third round. Miami tried to convert him from Edge to ILB. that didn’t work either.

Two rookies elevated to starting linup - ( New Window )

Defense absolutely needsg to get off the field more and feed SB...
Agreed, but he’s also still a JAG IMO. They clearly see something on Connelly.

Maybe it is because we finally hit on a linebacker. I am going to go with that until proven otherwise. I like his instincts and closing speed.

Obviously he didn't.
He's got speed but he is slow to react which is the death knell for an NFL linebacker.
That was my first thought as well, when I opened the thread I almost expected it to be Ogletree to get benched. He was worse last week.

But yeah, he did not live up to expectations...

If that’s the case then why isn’t DJ starting?
Ogletree just doesn’t have the speed
