What is so different for the first drives of the games

ron mexico : 9/15/2019 4:53 pm
Vs the rest of their execution?

How can they look so good then drop off a cliff for the rest of the game?
I don’t get it.
Today's first drive

I don't think we trusted Eli to do anything other than hand the ball off..
The first drive is scripted

After that the wheels fall the fuck off.
The defense makes adjustments

Success running the ball. When the run games stalls on early downs, the offense disappears
I thought last week Shurmur fell in love with the pass

and this week he went away from what was working in terms of personnel groups and formations.

Too much shotgun. Eli is no threat to run and any play-action doesn't allow for the same protection as it does when the play begins under center.
Positive yards

running the football on first down.

If you put the Giants in a situation where they have to rely on Eli and this cast of scrubs at WR, this offense is in trouble

He's a system weenie coach able to think of one drive all week, and goes to shit with his playcalling after adjustments are made. Pretty spot on.

Exactly. Giants need to lengthen their script to get them through more TD drives. Does the opposing defense make adjustments that keep the Giants re-running the script?

Yeah, that’s the most likely answer.

Do they just practice the hell out of those and once the D figures them out, they have little else to rely on?

Eli's playaction out of the shotgun looks bad, I can tell if he is going to hand off or not.
Also I noticed when Shurmur was hired

he has always been good at scripting an opening drive. Look at the 2018 NFCCG vs Philly. Vikings came out of the gate with a TD and then stalled the rest of the way.

I think the Giants offense only succeeding on scripted drives points to the weakness at QB. Eli is unable to go off-script and make things happen. He needs literally everything around him to be perfect or he is an ineffective QB. It also points to Shurmurs inability to make in-game adjustments.
