Would season feel different if Jones were starting?

nygiants16 : 9/15/2019 7:46 pm
I am not bashing eli but if Jones was the starter would the season feel like they were building something because the young quarterback was playing?
Yes
Justlurking : 9/15/2019 7:48 pm : link
Obviously. There would be a point to the losing. Right now thereís no point to what they are doing.
Kinda vague, no?
j_rud : 9/15/2019 7:49 pm : link
Is he playing well in losses? Or is he looking lost and playing poorly? That would be worse than the current nonsense we've been watching.
Yes.
markky : 9/15/2019 7:49 pm : link
we'd be building for the future. right now we're coming off of a few years of futility, not going to win anything this year yet we won't commit to the future for whatever reason.

frankly, it doesn't even make sense for Eli to be on the team this year. i guess for a few years now the front office has convinced itself we could somehow compete. we are not competitive. it's embarrassing.

at this point we should pull the trigger and see what we have. we're a bottom team that could be looking at a high draft pick next year. let's see what we have.

i hate that i'm typing this in the middle of September and would love to be wrong, but this is how i see it at the moment.
I am not saying to start jones
dairborn : 9/15/2019 7:50 pm : link
But I wonder what elements to the playbook are missing because of what Eli can't do vs what Jones can do with is feet.

Now the other side is that there are going to be some growing pains and mistakes by the rookie so maybe there is a trade off, but lets face it, NO ONE worries about Eli and him running.
No, the defense would be just as lousy. Jones is by a far more mobile
SterlingArcher : 9/15/2019 7:51 pm : link
than Eli, he would be running more and risking injury. As soon as Jones throws an INT he will be labeled a bust.
Jones
Steve in ATL : 9/15/2019 7:53 pm : link
even if Jones takes his rookie lumps and struggles he will learn from it and Giants will learn a lot about him.

So what if he is playing poorly? He is getting experience, eli was awful his first season..

he would be getting very valuable reps
It's Only a Matter of Time
Bernie : 9/15/2019 7:56 pm : link
Has nothing to do with Eli, but everything to do with the future of the organization. Eli's time is coming to an end, it's time to look forward. Eli's career had been what it has been, but the last Super Bowl (and playoff win) was 8 years ago and he will not be around for any potential future playoffs and dare I say Super Bowls. Time to go with DJ. Eli can look at his bank account if he is feeling unappreciated.

To be clear I want Jones to start. Ive been saying that since he was drafted.
Yes it would
BigBlueDownTheShore : 9/15/2019 7:57 pm : link
wins would not be something that we are expecting with a rookie QB at the helm. Growth from the position would be.

I feel for the season ticket holders. People would be a little more excited to go to the games if Jones was starting from the jump.

Eli is not the problem right now, but with him starting its more about his final season, instead of overall growth.
Instead of starting a new thread...

I am going to put the over/under at week 7, when Jones starts, that's just me.
Keep in mind
Carson53 : 9/15/2019 8:01 pm : link
just how bad Eli was back in 2004 as well, just saying.
Yes
mdthedream : 9/15/2019 8:06 pm : link
we would be 1 and 1. First half should have been a lot closer. Second half defense played a lot better.
Yes
micky : 9/15/2019 8:09 pm : link
Even though results likely the same. At least they are getting him experience. Seeing what he really is. Gets, if so, a headstart to the 2020 season with a yr under the kids belt and gives him a whole offseason to evaulate and improve from this season. Going into next season with EXPERIENCE
Yes it would
ron mexico : 9/15/2019 8:10 pm : link
It should be jones playing and Eli coming in if he struggles, not the other way around.
We need progress
lugnut : 9/15/2019 8:14 pm : link
SOMEWHERE. Weíre really not gonna go anywhere w/ Eli, God love him. Even if it wouldnít lead to Wís, we should start D. Jones immediately to begin his growth And if Shurmur is the young QB whisperer, that talent needs to be applied so we get something from him since his play-calling and Head Coachery are seriously in doubt.
Yes, because Eli isnít the future
Sean : 9/15/2019 8:16 pm : link
Eli is 38. We all wish he could have went out competing for division titles, but it isnít the case.

Even at 0-2, the first time Jones extends a play and coverts a 3rd down, the entire mood of the fan base will change. This fan base desperately needs some hope & Jones could represent that.
No.
NoPeanutz : 9/15/2019 8:18 pm : link
The defense has been such a shitstain, all we would see is how far we are on that side of the ball.
Jones would get experience, sure. That could be a good thing. But that would in no way impact what is now the biggest roadblock for this team.
The season already feels like a miserable failure, because the D has lived up to our worst fears of the summer. Starting Eli and sitting Jones has nothing to do with that.
We would still be 0-2.
Giant John : 9/15/2019 8:18 pm : link
Wondering why Eli isnít starting.
obviously
AndyMilligan : 9/15/2019 8:19 pm : link
yes.. because we would be progressing. we would learn about our rookie. if he's not up to it we need to know asap. if he is it expedites the new era of winning football.

right now, we are wasting time.
Yes, season Jones so he is a season ahead next year when he is
GiantsUA : 9/15/2019 8:19 pm : link
starting.

I love Eli, but he has a huge fork sticking out of his back.

In a strange way, PS has played this perfectly.
81_Great_Dane : 9/15/2019 8:25 pm : link
By the time DJ starts, there won't be a QB controversy.

Yes, the season would feel different if Jones were starting because then we'd be following his growth instead of Eli's decline. Losing 28-14 with a rookie QB is a different thing from losing by the same score with a veteran on his way out.

Another thing to consider is he might provide a spark. The fans and teammates seem to really support him. Have to switch now at 0-2 before its too late.
Yes.

It would be more fatalistic. We wouldnít approach each game with expectations, we would spend each game moving our name up and down the 2020 mock draft sheet with every play.
And each game thread would be rife with posts

Calling for DG to be fired because he canít pick players.

The owner applauded all the way by BBI.

giantstock : 9/15/2019 8:53 pm : link
It might feel even worse. The WR's don't know what they're doing just as much as the entire defense.

You'd still have Shurmur not using SB as much as he should too.

That would spell disaster for Jones. Think about his inexperienced WR's running the wrong routes and how well he'd take it.

Wait for a more experienced WR crew to get back and see how everything plays out next week etc.
...
Mdgiantsfan : 9/15/2019 8:53 pm : link
Feel different no? Iíd like seeing the future at qb but the rest of this team sans Saquon and EE at least on offense sucks. And the defense is terrible so overall this team is putrid.

The backup qb is always the most popular guy on the team
No, he would not make a difference,

Phil Simms said wait for the defense to improve before inserting Jones, ie ďgive the kid a chance ď
I think he wouldnít just give the fans
Bleedblue10 : 9/15/2019 11:01 pm : link
But the players on offense a spark. Idc what anyone says OBJ may have been the only one with the balls to say it out loud but he wasnít just speaking for himself
Maybe
Andrew in Austin : 9/15/2019 11:59 pm : link
would feel a little different on offense, but we all would be scratching our heads on how much our defense sucks.

At any rate, there are no WRs to throw to for Jones - he might as well wait until Shep and Tate are back in the line up.
It would even feel better if we had a stopgap
ron mexico : 9/16/2019 7:45 am : link
Like Fitz losing these games. At least you would have the sense that the GM can evaluate his own team

That's not true. The "wife and I cried at the dinner table tonight" brigade would still hit their knees every night pining for Eli and wishing that he'd show up in their dreams that night.
