Where in the schedule do you guys think is the best place to start Daniel Jones if you were to start him?
I would usually say after the bye (week 11) but that's the Chicago Bears. Do we really want to start him against that defense?
Schedule - (
New Window )
Week 5 has to be an option but Vikings, Patriots will be tough sledding.
I'd want him to have some games before the bye to reflect on.
Week 7: You're looking at 2 games against average to below average defenses followed by him getting to play a good defense (Dallas) which he's already seen the field against. It allows him to be eased in rather than throwing him in against the Bears with Khalil Mack screaming down on him all game.
That is the one thing you can't do. You put him in he takes his lumps.
^This. I was initially thinking against the Jets, then the Cardinals, but now it's the Redskins at the latest. I would also insert him this week if we fall behind by 14 points. Eli is done. His lack of mobility is readily and painfully apparent to even a casual football fan. We have a bunch of possession receivers who need time to separate and get open. Only a mobile QB can buy them that time, as well as scramble for a few first downs.

Eli can come in off the bench if he is overwhelmed

I agree that I prefer that he 1) take his lumps and 2) show that he is resilient enough to take them
My comment was more along the lines that Eli's only value to the team at this point is as a capable backstop that can come in and perform without a lot of practice reps.
Start fresh after the Bye. let Jones get the last 6 games to prove himself with zero pressure.
The best timing if we were doing better would be week 7 as others have stated.

That's a really good point. You may have swayed me to your line of thinking.
EVERYONE.
Manning, Jones, Gettleman, Shurmer, Bettcher, Shula...EVERYONE.
And you start from scratch with the number #2 pick in the draft (which will be the new franchise QB), the best RB in the league, a somewhat serviceable OL, and continue to add pieces through the draft and FA to a young defense in need of a new DC to rebuild their confidence and develop their talent.
I do not think that anyone believes that this team with Eli Manning at quarterback is winning a super bowl or even making the playoffs.
I think there is no question we should make this change immediately and it should be obvious to everyone.
My question to those that think we should not start Jones, why the fuck not?
Admit it.
If the Giants announced Jones were starting against Tampa Bay you would be much more excited to watch that game then you are right now.
That feeling but you get when you think about Jones starting should tell you everything you need to know about this decision.
Thats the only thing I can think of, to somewhat save face behind the narrative of giving Jones the best chance to succeed.
PS and DG look like geniuses who know what their doing, hopefully the defense stays off the field more with the offense clicking so they can get their stuff together, confidence from the fan base and ownership is restored and we look forward to next year and the Giant football actually meaning something again.
But that process has to start now.
If there is any hope of salvaging this season it's by starting Jones. Hopefully inserting Jones into the starting lineup will provide a much needed spark.
Maximize the sample size that you have to find out if Jones really has the NFL potential you thought he did when you drafted him.
14 games is a lot.
If you have a top 1-5 pick next year, you may have an opportunity to draft Tua / Herbert / Fromm. Passing on that is an opportunity cost, and you should make sure you have the very most information possible before doing so.
Not to mention - what if, even if it's long odds, Jones brings a new energy to the offense, and this team starts to look like a more inspired group right away? Maybe you find yourself 2-2 with a re-energized fan base and people feeling better about the present AND the future.
If we see him start before week 7 it means one of two things imo; the Giants giving in to fan pressure or they think Jones is the real deal and can handle it.
Yes, there is 1 Big reason: there are no healthy NFL quality receivers on the active roster right now.
